so far no one helped me understand the difference Sad

With the installer version, the program will be installed on your pc (by default in C:\Program Files (x86)\Electrum), and the program will create a data dir on your pc (by default in \Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Local\Electrum) to store your wallet file and a few other files.

With the standalone version, the program will not be installed on your pc, but the program will still create a data dir on your pc (by default in \Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Local\Electrum).

With the portable version, the program will not be installed on your pc, and the program will create the data dir in the same place you put your electrum-1.9.8-portable.exe.

thanks a lot, can i ask what is the point of standalone version?

Windows installer version, its the best option!

Not necessarily. It depends on how you want to use the program.
The portable version is as safe as the installer if you use it right (don't use it on insecure machine!).
well this is an old post of mine which was brought up by the previous post.
i installed it 15 days ago and i created this post back then to know the difference between each of those link.

Electrum may NOT be the most secure, but it's one of the most convenient Desktop Wallets.

Great for daily spending (1BTC stored at most)
what are the risks about it? why is it not the most secure?

The answer is simply because there are wallets more secure than Electrum.
For example, your bitcoin on Trezor will still be safe even if you use it on a compromised computer.
if i want to pay 119$ i would buy a new hard drive and start downloading bitcoin core  Tongue
and BTW electrum is pretty safe and for more safety you can create an offline wallet https://electrum.org/tutorials.html#offline-mpk
i expected a bit clearer answer and explanation rather than advertising  Grin

and also if you used Electrum what do you think about it?

Electrum is a very good wallet, especially to new bitcoin users. It is a thin client (you don't need to download the whole blockchain but just ~25 MB block headers) and it is very easy to use. Smiley
this is exactly why i chose Electrum  Cool

You can just install the Standalone version right? It's the same as windows Bitcoin core download, also used for Standalone.

But it is unsafe to use Electrum on pc that is connected to internet because Electrum stores wallet data here: X:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Electrum

You should either encrypt the wallet with strong password or use offline pc.

If you need help with setting up Electrum on offline pc then here is guide:
http://www.btcguys.us/blog/how-to-create-offline-wallet-with-electrum-bitcoin-client-and-broadcast-transactions

as a rule of thumb you should encrypt your offline wallet too.

I would suggest windows installer version, it installs like any other program you would install and creates a desktop icon and it will be simpler to use.

The installer will install it to your computer like any other program. Portable is a small executable, you can carry it on usb, same thing with standalone.

For a newbie, the windows installer version would be the safest bet. It makes it easier for others to help you if you encounter problems.
This or standalone executable, both should be easy and good for you
