I experienced paying my meal using bitcoin and the transactions although was not that smooth as the guy made me to wait some time due to the glitch in the internet line and then having to wait for transaction to get confirmation, overall it wasn't that bad as what people would think . I believe once the restaurant owner figured that out how to improve transaction and service, it will be much better.

Also paid with bitcoin for beer, cocktails and food a few times. Therefor a slightly off-topic question to those who did as well:

How were tips handled? Often the price is coded into the QR code and - depending on your wallet - can't be changed. Last time I used bitcoin the waiter told me that although they accept BTC, tips in FIAT would be welcome.

Do payment processors have a solution for that?

I paid in Bitcoin but tipped the guy in fiat (I figured the owner was likely paid the bitcoins directly so it would skip the server). I got a 10% discount for paying with bitcoin though Smiley

The waiting for your beer is not an issue? What I don't like is whenever anyone makes a transaction with the bank, the bank makes a fee!

A normal merchant uses a service like Bitpay or BitKassa (Dutch company) to handle Bitcoin payments. These companies promise that the merchant gets their money, even if a double spend happens or the price crashes. Merchant aren't at risk, so accepting a 0 confirmation transaction isn't a problem at all.

I have paid for beer (actually I think it was cocktails) with Bitcoin.

Why do people who don't use Bitcoin think they are experts on Bitcoin?

You go up to the bar, the dude types the price onto his tablet, a QR code pops up. You scan the QR code. A few seconds later "Transaction complete".

Done.

barmen gonna wait for bitcoins ten minutes?
No, he would need to assume on 0 confirmation that you are not cheat. Exactly like you giving him paper money, that they aren't fake

You are clearly trolling about the block confirmation time. However merchants selling items priced as low as a single beer should have no issues accepting 0/unconfirmed transactions as the cost to pull off a double spend attack would be greater then the cost of the goods you would be stealing.

As a result you would not need to wait 10 minutes to buy a beer

i wanted him to troll some more.  it is actually an opportunity to advertise the projects you like by talking about it with the trolls.  Grin

... or if you really want to do it on your own, there's ripple.

but keep in mind, that using the methods mentioned is like having a middle man. you get your btc in seconds, but someone else is holding them for you.
