Simple Machines seems nice, and while I've never used it, this forum uses it and it seems to work fine.

I've used phpBB before and it's pretty good too.

Most people would agree that the best forum software is vBulletin, but it isn't free. In fact, it's quite expensive.

I would use MYBB if I were you it is also free and very simple to use. Also you can change themes etc.
MyBB is pretty good too, i had a forum with MyBB, there are lots of extensions for MyBB.

I wonder how the 'new forum' theymos is apparently working on will be like. I guess he ordered it custom tailored? It'll be interesting to see what features get culled from this forum and if everything's at least as safe and secure as it is with this forum. Please don't go downhill from here  Smiley

You could try one of the open source projects.
Not the same, but similar
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php
https://www.phpbb.com/
and there are some others, if I'm not mistaking.

phpbb is very customizable and easy to use, I've started to create forum with it, and it's still my favorite.  Smiley

Where to buy the script ?
I will run it in my language, not in english.

As you can read at the bottom of every page, this forum is based on SMF (Simple Machines Forum).

Give a look at http://www.simplemachines.org/ for further information.

Ha, I doubt, it'll come with all those crazy additions theymos developed. Well, it is some rather stable forum software, although it reminds me of the early 2000s at times  Tongue

You have many forums on the internet, some of them can also be used for free, and have great skins.
You can surf little on the internet, and I am sure that you will find something for your taste.

Oh ok, sorry i missed that. Well you can find out a lot of free scripts out there, but be carefull with backdoors if you know what i mean.

This forum script is one of SOOO SOOO MANY forum scripts.

This one is also probably HEAVILY hacked from the base source to get the custom posting requirements/signature restrictions and other features.

Use le google. Search for the one that has the larger community, and runs on a platform you are familiar with Linux/Doze PHP/Py/Ruby/Node.

And then hopefully the one that has the most options you require in the base source.

Simple machines forum is a free script as far as I know, I doubt the template is a paid one as well considering how simple it looks, a medium Domain and a hosting plan shouldn't be too expensive as well. Getting users to your forum is the tough part (and is what makes this forum something.)

I don't think it's as easy to  generate a userbase like this one has. Anybody can host or run a forum but it's very hard to get the traffic or hits. I'd use a more up to date software as this one is a little dated now. What language will you be basing it on?

Keep in mind though that this forum is heavily modified from the default configuration, and you'll want to use the latest version (currently 2.0.8 ) for security.
Good advice, I forgot to mention it.

The new forum software that is currently in development is going to be open source so you could possibly wait and use that  Cheesy.
Yes, it's a good thing they will publish it as open source. That decision surprised me in a positive way.
Not sure about how much the OP can wait though. Smiley

There are plenty of other for softwares though.
Xenforo seems to be well appreciated, too.
