You would have to think about this all.  If someone accidentally sent it to you, what is saying that they did not need that money to pay their bills or something important.  Maybe they were paying a bill or sending money to someone who really needs it.  You have to wonder.  I would return it.
well it might ahve been just an accident that does not mean that they did not need it i think because of that i would most probably return the bitcoins back without thinking

Yes, it's pretty hard to mistakingly change a letter for another letter and that address actually existing, but stranger things have happened. In this forum people has reported recieving Bitcoin out of nowhere, so I guess out of millions of transactions it can happen.

Changing a random letter more often than no will result in an invalid address. Anyway, I will first check where it came from, maybe it was not as random as I think (probably I won a random giveaway or something Grin), I guess I would rather start a thread here on BCT letting people know what happened and wait for the owner of the coins to come and explain what happened (some will say that not every Bitcoin user is on Bitcointalk, but we have to consider that such a topic would instantly become famous "all over" the net).

First of all I have never received any bitcoin accidentally and  if I receive then I will send it to a real owner if he contacts me before I have spend them.
Lol if they can not contact you? because bitcoin is anonymous so everyone will not know if it's a bitcoin address is yours?
so how are they going to contacting you? I think it's less likely to return to the owner, better keep save it bitcoin dude Lol

If I know who sent it and if there is a good reason that someone falsely sent it, then I will return it. But if it's not, then I will keep it to myself.

It depends on the situation when I got that random BTC. If I had no money while getting that free BTC for sure I will keep it till the owner of that coins send me a message to send his money back. If my wallet is fat enough at that time, for sure I will send the money back even the owner didnt ask it back.

I am one of those people who believe in karma, so I would return it to the sender.  If I did not, I am sure something would happen and I would loose all the Bitcoin that I have.  So, yes I would return it if I received 1 BTC from what I was not expecting.

Let's say you wake up some day and you get like 1 BTC. For me this is a lot. What do you do? You return back the BTC to the owner, do you keep it? and why.

I don't know what I would do to be honest. I mean who knows if the guy that just sent you this is a criminal or a good man? Very tough decision. For someone like me that has a small BTC wallet and is trying to make as much BTC as possible before its too late due price going too high, it would be hard to return it, but I would feel bad to keep it too.
if you feel bad to keep it, why don't you look for the owner of the address? or you can ask here, in this forum. if someone can prove that the address is his/hers, then ask him/her. did she/he give it to you or was it a mistaken?

Well, let's imagine that someone mistaken a letter or number in wallet's adders and send me 1 bitcoin. I would keep it of course. How that guy would found is the number where he mistaken and sent 1 BTC exist or no? He couldn't write me even a letter like "hey, I mistaken number can you return me?" Who cares?! What's  done is done. It's not my problem, it's his. Next time be careful and use copy paste about wallets' numbers.

It would be insanely difficult, if not impossible, for this to happen, but if it happens, what else are you going to do? The best thing you can do is just keep it and thank physics for the uncertainty that just happened.

I would send back bitcoin if the owner of it would fastly contact me. But he must prove that this bitcoin is property of him. If no one contact me in following few days, I will consider it as a generous gift.

I will keep for myself. I don't know if he/she wanted to send a gift to me. And i think that its possible that if i give it back to the same address could be an exchange address and the user will not receive it back.
In case that the bitcoin user contact me (witch is very difficult), and sign a message from the sending address asking for its bitcoin i will return it back.

Yeah but U think that chance is very rare that he can find you, and once you have it and genuine person asks you to send him back then you should surely send it back.

Yes I returned it when I received some random BTC. Just be careful that you don't return something that was meant for you. That would be a bummer.

For me it would highely depend on the guy. I would try and read his attitude from what he says to me, if he demands the btc then i probablt wouldnt send it back, but if hes nice i would. Grin
Yep. If the person is a total butthole, then I wouldn't want to return the coins to him but if he asks nicely and sincerely, then I might've returned it to him. However, I might ask for a little amount as compensation for his mistake. Not much, just a little.

You are the total butthole.  There is no way for that person to speak to you or vice-versa.  You can't contact somebody based solely on a bitcoin address.
Does anyone posting in this thread know how bitcoin transactions work?
