Just wanted to point this edit out. I was told by a friend that these worked just fine without being powered but that is NOT the case. I have tested it myself and they will only work when the molex is plugged in. Also, I should have unpowered x1 to x1 risers coming in next week as well as the USB styled risers. Website launching March 1st! 
That being said, the powered ones do not need the power to be plugged in for them to work, so they can serve as unpowered risers as well.
EDIT: This is incorrect. After testing these out they MUST be connected to the Molex or they will not work.

I can vouch for this guy, I bought a bunch of him a few weeks ago and they are working great in my rig. here is a photo, not sure if you can see the cables though:
