Hey guys I had a few questions about bitcoins and thought I'd come here.  Bitcoins are interesting yet confusing, although I'm sure I'll figure things out over time, I just need to find the right place to ask a few questions :p

I'm a computer science grad student. My interests are assembly (x86), C/C++, GNU/Linux, CPU architecture, hobbyist OS development, OpenGL, game development, democoding, electronics and retro gaming.

I have now spent several hours trying to compile bitcoin, still without it working. This makes me quite sad. In one of my cryptography classes several years ago I was introduced to the concept of "digital cash" (primarily the mathematics thereof), but I will admit that I didn't know it was actually implemented like this prior to seeing the recent Slashdot article. So I thought I would just try it for myself -- too bad I'm spending so much time just trying to compile the thing.

Hey everybody,

So you can probably tell I'm new here  Cheesy. My name is Jake Antifaev, and I'm an entrepreneur. I recently heard about Bitcoin, and was able to raffle up 10 coins. I plan on creating a gambling network, which will have multiple casino/custom games.

Hopefully I fit in, and I could use some advice for the network.

Hello, this is my first time here and wanted to figure out how to set up a worker in a pooled bitcoin mining community.

Basically you install OpenCL and get it working, then point it at your pool with login info.  If you give some details about what hardware, OS, and mining software you're using I'll be happy to help you try to get it working.  If you already figured all that out (it took me a very long night a few months ago, and I feel like I'm pretty good with Linux and tech things), then kudos and have fun!

Yours,
Lou Minati Elite

It's good to be here!  I mine on deepbit and bitclockers, and I am totally satisfied with the setup and the payout.  I am affiliated with a company that will do web and mobile development (HTML, JQuery, PHP, MySql, Android, etc) and accept payment in bitcoin:  https://plumflowersoftware.com

Hi, I'm the BossChair.  I named myself after the one slightly fancier chair on the BitCoin show, because that's the chair the host gets to sit in.  I'm new to bitcoins and haven't really jumped in with both feet yet, but am interested in taking part in the discussion.

Welcome, xxxcoin!  I guess we joined at the same time.  Your coins sound dirty.

Hi, I am Bart and new to this forum. Last week I started out with two rigs on deepbit.net. In total I just got my 1st BTC Smiley. Reading on this forum, I saw a webpage which showed who finished the last blocks. On that I saw slush and deepbit most. First I thought because they have to most power (workers), but on another thread I read that workers do not combine their calculations on the same block. I was thinking that solo mining was interesting, if you have the most Mhash/s power combined by more rigs, on your own bitcoind. But now I read that those rigs are not working on the same blocks. Even further, if you have 4 GPU's, all four miners on that rig are even not working on that same block. Is that correct?

Does that imply that solo mining is only interesting if your hardware has very high power per miner ? So that 2x a HD5850 ~350Mhash/s less interesting for solomining that 1x a HD5970 doing ~700Mhash/s?

Or do I have this wrong ?

Would be great to post in the correct threads instead of this newbies section.

Hi all, I'm Lucas.

I'm a software engineer, the primary language I use is C/C++.
I first heard about Bitcoin in a slashdot article and was inspired by how it might change the world.
I believe decentralized currency is the future, in order to make that a reality I would like to contribute to the bitcoin code.
Current banking systems are corrupt and not functioning responsibly.
We cannot continue to allow corporations to exploit the bailout system.
Economic order needs to be restored and crypto-currency seems to be the way to go.

My secondary goal here is for this to be a learning experience.
I hope to learn quite a bit about cryptography, mathematics, economic systems, decentralized networks and network theory in general.
All casual interests of mine that I've always wanted to learn about and subsequently implement.

Hi... Here to make frenemies with speculators. Bitcoin needs its own economy, not its own exchange rate.

Sup, it's moeSizlak.  Been mining since '08:  June 8th.  Currently mining in a very small (20GH) pool:  http://www.rfcpool.com.  I got in right after they found their first block and it's been hella profitable (luck++) ever since.  But seriously, the real reason I'm on this board is I want to advertise my new website, which will be online and ready to go by mid-August, BITCOIN BLACKJACK:  http://bitjack21.com

The site is done entirely in HTML5 & Javascript, with a PHP/MySQL backend.

It's a 100% honest bitcoin blackjack game.  The house edge is less than 0.5%.  There are 8 decks, shuffled after every hand (to prevent card counting which would tip the edge in the player's favor).  The minimum bet will be 0.01BTC (currently about 15 US cents).  Doubling/splitting and most other common blackjack rules will be in full effect.

Come check it out, it's guaranteed to satisfy all of your bitcoin gambling needs!

Site will be going live in early to mid August 2011.

I just won another ATI 5870 so my numbers are going to go up.  I have a Linux system I will be using for my new miner...
