Altcoins prices are based on btc most of the time, if Btc goes up most alts will go up.

Bitcoin goes up i see a lot of alts going down because people cashing out to get in bitcoin, bitcoin the crashes people buy back into alts and the cycle is ready to go again. Ltc being different that usually rises with bitcoin from what i have seen.

you have to specify which altcoin you mean. some of them are, the famous ones specially the ones that are traded against dollar are related with the bitcoin price but any other altcoin's price is only affected by pump and dump.

alt coins live in the shadow of bitcoin so I would say the prices are related if bitcoin fails they all fail.

BTC and alts are clearly correlated but my impression is that this correlation is gradually uncoupling over time
Anybody done any work on this that confirms/refutes this?

The two are usually correlated to some extent. As more money moves  into Bitcoin, no doubt, some of the BTC will flow into altcoins. The reverse is also true. However, when there is big news for altcoins and bad news for Bitcoins, you will see a drop in BTC price and a rise in altcoin price. At moments like these, the effect is stronger than the normal levels because the drop in BTC price may increase the buy pressure and increase the number of BTC in the hands of investors. When this happens, you find an overwhelming rising in some altcoin prices. This demonstrates the whole greater than the sum of its parts.

you gave a good explanation for something I had ever seen, but I did not give much importance

Litecoin is on an upward trend, so as Bitcoin http://bit.ly/1x5QyYQ

Do you think both these coin's price trend in anyway related?

The appropriate answer is no.
But what I feel is, every customer is feeling a little off about digital currency that is why.

Yes they are! they always were and always will be , that's why they are alts.
Though people might say other currency do not depend on each other , Actually even they do , that's how share and market value of exchange rate between currency's works

Nah..

If there were any connection, LTC should be as valuable as bitcoin right now.

Where's the logic in that? When bitcoin has risen dramatically alt coins, especially LTC, have actually risen along with it but got no where near the price. I think it has a knock on effect and people rush to buy the next best thing.

Given that 99% of altcoin purchases are done via bitcoin, you would expect that a 10% increase in bitcoin would by default translate into a 10% rise in altcoin prices, measured from a fiat baseline. But there is so much volatility in altcoin markets that it can be hard to spot that correspondence.

If I recall correctly, LTC value has been increasing of late as priced in satoshis, not just fiat. But that's just a small recovery of the great losses in  value that LTC has suffered over the past year, far more than BTC. So I wouldn't make much of it yet.
What actually tends to happen is that when bitcoin falls by 10%, most altcoins tend to fall by at least 10.01% and when bitcoin rises by 10%, most altcoins tend to rise no more then 9.99%. In other words, most altcoins tend to fall over time when compared to bitcoin, however their Dollar prices are correlated.

Aren't all altcoin sold in terms of their bitcoin equivalent price ? And because of them aren't they actually correlated in terms of price ?
Yes they are almost always sold in terms of bitcoin (with the exception of some of the major alts like LTC and DRK).

As mentioned above when the price of bitcoin increases in terms of USD by a large amount, the price of most alts decreases in terms of bitcoin, the same is true when the price of bitcoin decreases in terms of USD by large amounts

Altcoins are related to the Bitcoin price, they are highly correlated.

But people still invest in altcoins, thinking some altcoin is going to outperform Bitcoin.  Smiley

Its possible that some altcoins might have a chance to outperform Bitcoin, but i hightly doubt it, however there is far more innovation going on in the alt community, its just a pity they couldnt all work together to make something better instead of branching out in all directions.

Bitcoin is a dinosaur with little innovation.
NXT is the only serious competition that BTC will face, and probably has the highest chance of anything topping BTC.
If not, it will come a very close second to BTC, but i dont actually consider NXT an alt at all.
