Desktop wallets are also okay to keep your bitcoin on it because you have the possesion of your private keys but the risk of lossing it is still there. Just like what is being mentioned above you must have a clean pc and an antivrus in able to avoid being hacked on your desktop wallet. If you really possess huge amounts then better to find and use hardware wallets. In my own opinion.
There is never a good and secure place to store your Bitcoin. Every system have vulnerable and it really comes down to how you handle it. By far Bitcoin Core is one of the safest if you know how to protect your computer and your wallets - like what isen mentioned.
However, I wouldn't recommend you to store all your Bitcoin in one place/machine. If you have a lot of Bitcoin (who know how much for how long?), you should spread them between a lot of wallets ranging from Bitcoin Core to hardware wallet. This way if something bad happen to one of your machine or wallet, you still have some Bitcoin left.

I am looking for the best wallet to safely store my bitcoin for the next lot of years (who knows how long) is bitcoin core a safe place to do this or should i look at others?
As long as you keep your PC clean,use an antivirus software,don't visit sites you don't trust and don't download shady exe files it is safe (much safer than online wallets).If you are planning to store a big amount of Bitcoin and look for an even safer solution try a paper wallet or buy a hardware one.
