I think the world cannot be unipolar or bipolar at the moment. So neither China nor the US can be considered the dominant power. There are at least four powers that can destroy the whole world - the US, Russia and China, and North Korea.
In my opinion, we now have a multi polar globe with several regional powers developing and acting in their nearby territories. This is especially true these last few months/years, with China getting more aggressive on the south-east Pacific and Russia involved in regional conflicts outside of it's traditional sphere of influence (Syria). Let just hope that these superpowers do not collide and keep content with their current situation.

India, Pakistan, France and UK can much faster and easier destroy the whole world then North Korea. North Korea is drastically overrated. Media made it so and USA politics abused that in the past. It si much easier to rule when you have enemies that people fear of.

They can because they are capable but many countries hate China for their totalitarian, even their people in HongKong do not want main China to be a world leader, because they are very oppressive, they rule by intimidation, they want all the seas the land and everything they can claim.

I dont think at this kind of situation wherein we are currently under the pandemic china will going to dominate the world. I dont think china can do it ALONE. There are a lot of countries out there that could join together and could possibly dominate the world but having china alone is more likely to be imposible.

Is China going to dominate the world?
China is the second largest economy in the world. The cold war between China and USA and the tension between India and China on the line of actual control. China is challenging USA in every filed. What do you think is China going to dominate the world or USA will be the super power.

No one can dominate the world anymore.  There are 3 strong players and 4th is growing. USA, China and EU. India id getting close to them in next decades. When world power is so evenly divided there cant be single entity to dominate.

China will find it easier to dominate the countries that are indebted to them, for example there are a lot of countries, especially in Africa that owe China a lot of money, and even before the outbreak of corona virus these governments do not even have the resources or plans to pay back in the near future, the aftermath of covid-19 makes it more improbable for them not to default on the loans; this can play well into Chinese hands. They can slowly gain control of these countries (territories within them) and their resources in exchange for the money owed, a situation that could lead to neocolonialism in the long run.

But dominating the entire world is beyond China, they may have a good and fast growing economy, but to dominate the entire world, they need to surpass other nations, especially economically and in defense (military) and they need strong allies with other world powers (China are making more enemies than friends atm).
The US are currently ahead of china and the world in these aspects and I don't think China can usurp them.

Yes, I think so. Every big and strong country will want to dominate the world, especially if they have resources to do that.
They will slowly compete with the other country in the same region as them, and after they can beat that country, they will challenge the other country which is bigger than their country.
And soon, after they beat that bigger country, they will try to force their rule to the small country and another country, and if necessary, they will force with power.
They will not stop doing that until their plan can achieve success, no matter how long it will happen.

China is already dominating the world.
It is not the second largest economy but the first strongest one. They have also the biggest population in the world and the biggest workforce in the planet with makes them an economic super power.

@sum99 the answer to your question lies in the speech given by China’s President Xi Jinping in 2017, where he laid down the plans for China to dominate the global economy and the world by 2049. Also I know many will discount the possibility of this happening, but the reality is China has already laid a roadmap for it, and if all the countries don’t united against China then their domination plan will succeed, and it’ll be too late to stop them.

Quote

Xi declared that China “has stood up, grown rich, and is becoming strong,” and that it was now “blazing a new trail for other developing countries” and offering “Chinese wisdom and a Chinese approach to solving the problems facing mankind.” By 2049, Xi promised, China would “become a global leader in terms of composite national strength and international influence” and would build a “stable international order” in which China’s “national rejuvenation” could be fully achieved.

I think it is possible for China to become the next superpower. If you look at human history all empires rise, peak and then fall. Look at the Roman Empire, Dutch Empire, British, etc. No Empire can last forever. Me living in the USA I can see how everything is falling apart.

I agree but at the moment the Chinese military is no match for the USA. It will still take a long time for china to surpass the west. The trade wars will likely continue and intensify. Don't forget China is being build on the back of their own population offering products to the west.

I don't think the West will just follow China in their communistic dictatorship approach to run a country. Eventually the chinese people will demand more rights. I would assume we will see an alignment of China with the west in the long run. You can't controll your population for ever with increasing technology.

Pretty interesting graph by the way, I've never seen this before. Per Capita though is going to be one that is going to be heavily skewed towards the US looking much better, obvs though
True, but whilst the US has had x5 growth in GDP per capita, China has had x40 in the same time - admittedly from a low starting point.
I do like that style of graph, I think it illustrates points that might not be apparent with more standard techniques. There is a CV19 chart I shared a couple of months ago that employs a similar approach.

Dominating the world is not just a numbers games. It takes a combination of wealth, millitary coercion and a lot of Soft power emanating from ideology. Military coercion stems from technology which the Chinese have caught up to thanks to three things. Chinese govt sponsored espionage, West's gullibility and like in case of those university professors, individuals selling off souls for money.

Also, IP theft. China doesn't have to pay shit for R&D so they save money by just stealing whatever the U.S. develops. And the U.S. spends an absurd amount on R&D in regards to the military.

Military coercion also needs bodies. Chinese state propagnda does that job quite well. Media and film industry in China has also been playing its role in invoking the historic threads about the greatness of Chinese achievements (which frankly are not to be overlooked). As per Indian strategists, the morale and nationalist fervor is a manufactured one amongst the Chinese. Not a real, human spirited love of your country. I mean how much can you love a country that is run by a cabal of Single party representative, tracks and censors every single one of your actions and thoughts to make sure you fall in line. Don't forget this is a party that turned their students into red mush when they protested.

All these things ensure that the Chinese can never have the soft power of persuasion that the US has enjoyed for most of the 20th century. This corona virus fiasco, their attempts at buying off corporations in cash-strapped countries, bribing off officials to permeate policy making, Debt-diplomacy in the form of BRI. There is enough evidence to show that the Chinese juggernaut is basically an ethic-less, cold killing machine. Will the world allow itself to be browbeaten by this bully??

I still have enough faith in democracies and the human spirit to accept that. Fuck you commies.

Is China going to dominate the world?
Yes, I think so, based on trajectory over the last few decades. It depends on your metric, but this site provides some useful comparators (albeit 18 months old).
You also mentioned the China/India 'conflict'. This I think is a separate issue and the Himalayas will become more of a battleground in the decades to come as growing populations combine with climate change to make control of water sources tremendously important (see also the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam).

Pretty interesting graph by the way, I've never seen this before. Per Capita though is going to be one that is going to be heavily skewed towards the US looking much better, obvs though -- as China has had rapid RAPID RAPID population growth alongside their economic growth, while not the same thing can be said in the US in regards to population growth.

Obviously the US has had population growth as well. Though we all know that China has even had to institute policies such to stop this growth --> 1 Child (and now 2 Child policy) for people.

NO, I don't think so china's gonna dominate the world in any way . Yes maybe it could become strongest economic superpower of the world but domination is just different thing .
China will also face heavy trade wars soon according to experts . China is somehow facing negative effect of Covid in terms of getting power because of many reasons like oil price fluctuation , less exports and imports and so on.
And what i predict is that USA will make a comeback for sure post covid. Roll Eyes

China is the manufacturing hub of this world, without China we can't produce most of our daily using products but world learnt their lesson from covid 19 so most of the countries are trying to move their manufacturing companies away from China which itself shows that China is not yet got the power to dominate the world.

It has been talked about for a previous couple of years but nobody is supporting it that China will run the entire world China is trying to dominate the planet through various strategies but the Indian government has opposed it with US President Ronald Trump. If the planet returns to its former position on global climate change there'll be no change in China's influence.
