I would like to ask for apologies to everyone there's a misinterpretation and it's my fault I should have included that I am launching a local Cryptocurrency forum there's a misinterpretation of my post I should have included this, anyway got a few domain names and we are in the selection process.
Hopefully, we'll launch next month, will be using SMF but the theme will be customized to look local.

I think I should move this thread to the project development section.
It turn to be worse than it was because you're trying to become a competitor for inviting your local users to participate in your own forum. Not sure if it's can work because many users are actively in this forum because of the signature campaign, so you need to have such marketing to make people interested.

Maybe the forum administrators will not really mind about it since they said we have freedom to speech and there's no rule they will delete anything about competitor related stuff.

It might look good at the start, meaning people who are not from English-speaking countries might get to know Bitcoin through this on your local board, but in the long run, it might deviate from the main purpose of creating this forum. Just as the Name sounds Bitcointalk,  preferably that discussion should be in line with what is happening in the Bitcoin and crypto world.

I have a thread about this in my local community but I would like to ask the whole community

Is it good for local forums to include other interests to attract more traffic, we all know Bitcointalk is an international forum dedicated to the promotion of Bitcoin, and being the first makes them the number one forum about Bitcoin, if you're going to launch a local forum is it good to add other interests like local news, local celebrity gossip, local sports to attract more local users.

The strategy is to get other people with other interests in the forum to get them to know about Cryptocurrency which is the main theme of the forum.

And do you have a local Cryptocurrency forum in your country?
This is a bitcointalk, not KimKardashianTalk Cheesy
Btw some big local communities, like German and French boards already have an off-topic and local news section. But there is not a big demand on them. If we turn bitcointalk into Reddit, we won't be able to increase the number of customers because Bitcointalk is very old in terms of web design and functionalities. 99% of young people aren't going to leave Reddit or Twitter and come here for that purpose.

I think the aim of forum owner is to let it be alive on its own while it can. If this forum becomes a combination of Reddit, Stackexchange/Stackoverflow and Slack, then it will attract a lot of people. This will take a lot of money, time and intellectual resources.

People who are in this forum must know about crypto and are interested in crypto so local board don't involve anyone new in crypto. not all may be proficient in English and may not understand well in this case local board can help those people to understand a topic better as there are postings in local language. People come to this forum knowing about crypto then no one comes to this forum without understanding about crypto and without any purpose. So I don't think the purpose with which you opened this topic will be served

Is it good for local forums to include other interests to attract more traffic
  • Does local forums mean local boards in Bitcointalk or do you imply about other forums in your nation?
  • I am against this idea. Because as a forum, you have to moderate it and if you add so many things in one forum, you have to moderate different things which overwhelm your knowledge, skills and time too. It also makes that forum like a mess and it does not serve any specific user type. For instance, I did not join this forum to learn about gold, how to invest in gold, how to secure my gold bars.

This forum is a biggest one for Bitcoin community, not because it is a first one. It is indeed because it has big brains behind, first Satoshi Nakamoto and later some other head admins, moderators and users. Strict rules are other contributors for the forum success too. Like when they saw a spam wave in 2017 ICO, they raised their voice and theymos considered a few months before a merit system was kicked off.

Forum admins, moderators and members are resources, precious ones for its success.

Nope, its not bitcointalk anymore if you put local news, celebrity discussion and other more. It became showbiz talk if you add stuff like that.

Bitcointalk should be Bitcoin and crypto topic only. And beside you could just start that discussion on out of topic section regarding on what topic you want to discuss.

Don't we have that option on the forum? Look at the "Off-topic section" topics and how much rubbish there is, just as there are a lot of discussions on the "Serious discussion" boards. I do not see the need to discuss the lives of the stars, so they are discussed enough wherever possible. On the contrary, I avoid it, and the forum is the only place where you can take a break from this noise.
I don't think that Bitcoin needs to be popularized in this way; it's more important to have people who purposefully go after knowledge, not to be like their idols.

Well, in our local thread Pakistan, we discuss everything, which includes crypto plus non-crypto issues/ information too. I guess the local community can contribute much better as compared to the threads like off-topic etc.
I do not know about other local boards but I will agree that you can discuss non-crypto stuff in local threads, and moreover, in local boards, it will be more easily to classify topics as different threads can be made there.

Also, in a local community, you can attract the non-crypto people to your local thread with generic topics and from there groom their interest in cryptocurrencies and bitcoin.

Ask your local board mod, he will request the creation of such a sub-board from @theymos, and then the choice is for theymos to either create sub-board or refuse, but the local mod is responsible for ensuring that that board does not turn into spam. if the members of your board make high-quality posts, they will it will be easy to add more sub-boards. why they need off-topic sub-board, they can ask for New boards like Economics/Marketplace sub-boards which is better than off-topic.

I'd say this is just a hidden way to increase post count for quota campaign Roll Eyes

AFAIK all campaign managers who are accepting post in local board don't mind to count post that don't have any relation with Bitcoin, crypto, project or the forum general. Discussing a local thing is more easier and people can create long post, so the managers will just count the post since it's long and looks high quality.

Either theymos want to add it, I don't mind. But I hope the signature space isn't visible on those kind board Roll Eyes

My local board (Indonesia) already has 'Off-Topic' subsection so all those topic you mentioned belong there, if your local-board hasn't had 'Off-Topic' section, I think there is no harm adding that. However tho, I don't know why people would want to discuss about celebrity and sports on a bitcoin forum, there are so many places you can discuss those kind of thing.

It does make sense to add other non-crypto related stuff, but honestly I don't think that it will help much to attract users. Older forum users are already used to forums where they spent years (that probably have crypto subforum) while younger audience prefer other means of communication.

And do you have a local Cryptocurrency forum in your country?
We did have several attempts, but none managed to get any traction. By far the biggest and the most active crypto community (when it comes to forums) in my country usually hangs out in an already established general type of forum that's been around since early 2000s and that has dedicated crypto child board. That's where I heard about Bitcoin for the first time back in 2013 and where I used to discuss crypto related stuff until 2019 when I decided to join this forum.

Nope — because there's no way that people will be using Bitcointalk for things outside of bitcoin/crypto. Platforms like Facebook/Instagram/Twitter/Reddit/etc already exist for those purposes. Bitcointalk will always be a niche community.
