This would have to be accepted by the community. Even if it is declared official people like us, you and me will have to start to talk and use btc instead of xbt.
Was out of network for couple of week. And when I get back, the first news I hear that XBT is the new sign !!!! Are you f*******kidding me.

At some extent it can be called "official" due to being accepted as an ISO-Certified Currency Code. Most ppl are still trusting this type of central authority.It definitely will increase the adoption of bitcoin.

I'm pretty sure OP is referring to currency codes. In this case, the appropriate "office" is the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and XBT will be the "official" currency code for bitcoin precisely if/when this organisation declares it to be so.

I would say that merchants would have more influence and in turn coinbase/bitpay would have influence that may be able to "change" how people "look" at a unit of measure of bitcoin

official as in the corporation that manages the ISO's has authorized it.. or official because you read it in some article that people are thinking of using it..
