I assume, ethereum has some potential to grow big, but still, is it possible for any altcoin grow bigger than BTC? There are lots of promising projects out there...

Ethereum of any other coin, they are valued on the basis of bitcoins. I mean their worth in market is because of the bitcoins and hence they cannot eclipse bitcoins ever. I am not sure though that where the slow transactions take us, a lot of users lately adopted altcoins because of slow confirmations.

Depends a lot on the time frame doesnt it.

This year in 2017? I dont think its that likely, but I think within 10 years its entirely possible.

Short term, if Bitcoin forks and drops hard, ETH could temporarily be the leader.

But long term, I think the question is whether one of the alts will really get used.

For ETH, it's not really clear if the "dapp" projects in the pipeline really will get traction. They are hyped, but it's to be seen if they will be used. The most promising for me is Makerdao, although development is slow.

Other alts that bring something new that coud lead to a higher usage are Ardor (interesting "sharding" model with "childchains") and Decred (governance, "hard fork voting").

Ethereum can.  Especially if a HF happens.

LONGGGGGGGGGG shots: NEM, PIVX, ZCash

I don't agree with you. Those you counted up there were pumped like x2 x3 just because of the hard fork rumors of Bitcoin. Some people shifted their money from BTC to those altcoins. When the rumors were cleared, pumped altcoins will face a hard dump, I think.

Surely of BTC is the main trading pair with alts then BTC will always be growing as any alt grows!

Saying that, people are stupid, of course Bitcoin can be bettered, it's only a few years old it's not the fucking constitution. We will probably look back on BTC like we do Sony Walkmans in the future.

ya man, maybe.  BTC has the BRAND, THAT will be hard imo to match. But as more and more people come into crypto we find one of the biggest things we NEED is fast transactions, so imo, look to a coin that has fast transactions to someday "be the next Bitcoin" ;p
XMR,DASH (tho i would cry if dash makes it) , maybe XEM for businesses, time will tell!

possible? yeah, sure.
realistic? nah... at least not in this generation.. we are full of shitcoins.

ETH already made too much mistakes(and proved to be too centralized) to be bigger than bitcoin. maybe someday we find something suitable to the #1 place.

yes agree, lots of shitcoins, but few are really interesting, like Golem, the idea is very nice, wonder how they will succeed to accomplish it

Yes, it is definitely possible.

Look for tokens that have real world use - IOTA, for example, is partnering up with a lot of major companies.

Can you share the link? cant find this one IOTA...

It all depends in the community and how good are the devs of a coin, there are hundreds of coins right now,who has a good potential in the market but so far only eth is the best contender to reach what Bitcoin has reached, but it's always good for the industry for a coin to get perceived with good potential.

I think anything is possible. Bitcoin has the biggest headstart and the greatest network effect, so it would be hard to overcome that. Bitcoin also has the best developers working on it in terms of numbers. Right now the community is facing challenges with scaling and debate. If it wasn't for that I'd say it would be pretty much impossible to overcome Bitcoin. Now, it's not impossible but very hard.

Their is always possible for any Altcoin to grow above bitcoin, but for that it has to take lot of potential work and time to achieve it. but as per my view very soon we will be seeing it if the present situation is not controlled.

I don't think so because the bitcoin is a mother by all of the crypto sphere. The bitcoin is to be the main pair in every place on the world of the crypto.

The ethereum will be the centralized coin in the future, but it looks like there are a lot of the chance for the ethereum itself to always grow every time.

That thing to be possible with a lot of the support by some of the bigger companies around the world.

for ethereum no way.
for other existing altcoins: possibility is very low.
for a new altcoin in the future: it can if it really is good and was created with some usefull innovation in mind not just be made to make money out of pump and dumps.

and altcoins that currently exist, specially ethereum, are like that. they are made with terrible code, lots of bugs, they have a huge premine, a lot of ICO scam and lots of other kinds of manipulation (the list goes on) and their main purpose is to get pump and dumped and the manipulators make money.

coins like this can never grow big enough to even get close to bitcoin let alone be bigger than it.

There are lots of promising projects out there...

if you look deep enough at the "promise" not the "words" the dev and pumping team says you can see that the "promise is an illusion".

You have zero idea what you are talking about  Cheesy

I say yes, the clock strikes Monero, the bell tolls for fungible tokens, Eth is but a parting emission of Vitaleks anal passage. History records fluffy quadraped galloped when the whistle blew notes from bitcoin fork. No coin eat grass but xmr.

Bitcoin is well-publicized so altcoins need some time too to gain trust and be known and there are other factors to consdider too. The possibility is always there though (nothing is impossible, right?). We can't just tell if when exactly and what coin if ever it happens.

It is possible but for now it is still very difficult because bitcoin already quite famous and been used by quite many people, so in order to replace bitcoin they need to become more famous than bitcoin and got more or at least same transaction rate as bitcoin

At the moment it's really hard for any project to grow bigger than bitcoin even there is some controversy about BTU. That is the big reason some altcoin markets taking the advantage of this situation but once the doubt will be cleared than bitcoin will get new ATH.
