No, unfortunately PayPal won't refund those costs or the return shipping I'm afraid... all the seller did was tell me  that the laptop was working when he sent it and that's it. It was poorly packaged and one of the rules in claiming insurance on shipments is that the laptop must have been securely packaged. So that's a no-go. I might go out 50 euro or so on this one, but in the end, it's better to lose 50 euro than losing a laptop worth 500 euro I guess.

Saw someone asking whether PayPal ever sided with the seller - it did once in my case. I had sold a working laptop to a person who first claimed that I was scamming her since she couldn't find the shipment tracking using the number I gave her (turned out she wasn't even using the correct site), then once the laptop arrived, she said it worked for the first day and then stopped working. I sent proof that the laptop was working, that the customer had already accused me of fraud, that the same customer had confided in me,  that she had a lot of telephone bills to pay (she had sent me payment 4 days after the purchase was complete) and that she herself had claimed that the laptop was working when she first received it. PayPal decided in my favour there

How did you prove that it was working? Just by what she said originally? Paypal can and does side with the seller in rare cases, but you need to make sure you're covered with as much evidence as possible. You must always get a tracking number that needs a signature from the recipient that can be checked online. I've always wondered what would happen if a seller claimed he had received something but that it was just an empty box with something to weigh it down etc. How could the sender prove otherwise really? At the end of the day ebay just comes down to blind trust really, but it is so easy to scam people on there, especially when paypal refund money without looking into the case much.

I had taken pictures of the laptop before shipping, with the camera date at the bottom and additionally printscreens from the working laptop itself with the calendar opened. Of course, these can all be faked, but it always helps to have such evidence backing you up.

PayPal is buyer-biased at times, but for example right now I have an ongoing dispute about a laptop I received which isn't working (ironic...). PayPal is reviewing the claim - they asked me to send them a certified note from a  third-party qualified  technician that the laptop is not working, such as an invoice for repairs, etc. Again, easy to fake, but it's not an automatic payout by PayPal whenever a buyer opens a case.

Will Paypal refund you the money it costs to check it over? Maybe the seller should have taken it to a qualified third-party technician to prove that it was in full working order before they sent it? I suppose it could've been damaged in the post, and you could probably claim on the insurance with the carrier, but I wonder what proof they require as well?

I hope you didn't pay $1000 Torus... thats quite the loss
PayPal refunded me the whole sum.
It looks like he did not even reply to make a case.
I have no idea why he wanted to scam me using PayPal in the first place.

Well, he may have been using a stolen account, or he could've created a new account just to scam. As soon as he gets the money he'll just either send it to a different account, buy something with the money, or withdraw tit to a bank account, so he's still probably up whatever you sent him, so it's a very easy way to scam money.

i've used virwox, I would recommend it if you want to use paypal, but you are limited to 104usd per 24 hours x 3 deposits at account level 0 for 10 days.

I used Virwox once because I had money in neteller and it ended up costing me about 50% more because there wasn't enough people offering btc there. Of course it was a while ago and the market there may be different these days.

Also regarding bank transfers, I have heard of even these resulting in a chargeback (even a bank with compulsory 2fa). I think the key to any trade is checking the reputation/ratings of the other party.

A note of caution.
I sent the user Delgado804 money by PayPal yesterday and he confirmed receiving it but did not send the bitcoins.
I opened a dispute claim at PayPal.
Should the user send the bitcoins then I will update this post.
I will also vote negative on his trust.

Update 19.12.2013: PayPal ruled in my favor and refunded the whole sum. Delgado804 never replied to my emails and never sent the bitcoins.

Lots of replies here

Might want to make sure of this because I know Visa has strict regs against time frames on disputes. I think it's 30 - 45 days.

I'll do it for just 1 btc. You'll get burned anyhow.

Im going to start selling btc/ltc for paypal as soon as gain enough reputation around here.

How do you plan on avoiding chargebacks?
Iv been selling on other large forums already, chargebacks are easy to deal with through phonecalls.
Tip: Paypal does not cover virtual items.

Yeah, and that's why they'll issue a chargeback to the buyer without warning or investigating. I bought all my coins via paypal when I first started with cryptos so I know it's possible to make good money, but it's only a matter of time before you get scammed.
actually no when i get chargedback I call paypal and tell them the item was sent, they'll cancel the chargeback since theres no proof that i didnt send

Is there proof that you did? This seems to contradict stories I've read numerous times on here. PP/ebay seem to dish out refunds for anything if you don't have proof that you posted it.
Selling on forums with other members I mean, PP will always side with the buyer on ebay

I've seen many instances of both unfortunately.
fortunately for me I know how to deal with chargebacks Smiley

Let's put it to the test. Willing to sell me some coins via paypal?
sure, i go by preev rate. how many coins?

100  Cool. You do know even if for some reason I didn't get my money back from paypal, I have about 6 months to file a chargeback with my creditcard company?

Might want to make sure of this because I know Visa has strict regs against time frames on disputes. I think it's 30 - 45 days.

They vary I think - 6 months may be incorrect actually, but I'm sure I've seen some with a few months at least.
