I assumed that that was a new project.  I didn’t want to be too hard on someone who is excited about his new project.  He said there was “lots of room for improvement”, so I assumed that it was being improved.  I took that post within its four corners—only pointed out the obvious about keypools; HD wallet support is a basic MVP feature, a safety feature.  My bad.

A pile of unmaintained PHP code (srsly) that uses keypools, and is exclusively reliant on Blockchain(dot)(whatever)?  Mark Karpelès did better than this.

But its author has spare dev cycles to make videos promoting it on Youtube.

The question from OP is on the Development Board, and the question was how would someone achieve this without using a node. I shared an old project that showed how one COULD DEVELOP their own solution by looking at how I created a simple shopping cart with very minimal code. It is not a product launch, and I'm not telling anyone to use it, but rather a sharing of ideas and approach of how to solve different solutions.

I know it's fun to make fun of PHP but it is a lot more helpful to see someone else's simple implementation instead of you typing on a board "just use an zpub bro".  They can build on whatever stack they want. The simpiler, the easier to understand the concept and develop for it.

That is what this board is about.  

Very few people are offering anything helpful and instead are just pumping their signature campaigns, so don't scold me about sharing a walkthrough on youtube.

Yes, if a shop won't be expecting many customers then they can skip the "I have paid" part. It's more of a nuisance, and will only reduce like 15~20% of API usage.

A newb-friendly woo-commerce plugin can be made with this solution and might give that push to new entrepreneurs to accept Bitcoin as a payment method(even if they have zero technical knowledge about bitcoin itself). Given how they will be paying zero fees on it, compared to 3~5% fees on fiat payments.

The same can be done with Ethereum and ethscan for API.

Generate addresses from xpub(ypub for segwit), you can find many trusted open source libraries to do so.

Ask for confirmation from your customers when they send the payment("I have paid" button).

Keep a track of confirmed payments with explorer APIs. Blockchain.com offers WebSocket where you can subscribe to an address, make sure to subscribe to only confirmed payments.  Unsubscribe to old addresses to be under their API usage limit.

This method is noncustodial and free. A solid option for small shops  Smiley

Just wondering, which blockchain explorer API do you use? I expect such service change their API after some time, so your software could break in future.
It uses Blockchain.info, as seen in the code. Not only will this break if they change their API or shut it down, it also makes you completely reliant on this API being benevolent (from the inside) as well as not being hacked. For example, someone might find a flaw in the TLS certificate, MITM your connection to the API and serve you wrong information, such as showing them having paid, while they have not.
Your software would then provide them the (physical or digital) item they supposedly purchased, while not actually having received the BTC.

If someone were to use such a software, I'd make sure it at least queries multiple block explorers and checks them to give identical results. In any other case, it should send you a big red alert that something massively suspicious is going on.

Is your NoNodePay project supporting bc1 bech32 address type?
I don't see many code updates in last few years (except maybe readme file and decimals length) so I think you should update it for new address types, and adding Lightning support would be very cool if possible.
I think just using CypherpunkPay makes more sense: it uses two block explorers and has Lightning already built-in; and is generally much more up-to-date. Last commit 20 days ago.

Is your NoNodePay project supporting bc1 bech32 address type?
I don't see many code updates in last few years (except maybe readme file and decimals length) so I think you should update it for new address types, and adding Lightning support would be very cool if possible.

Any plans to add BIP 32 standard HD wallet support?  That’s a basic safety feature; BIP 32 was developed after it was discovered that, in the nitty-gritty real world, keypools are a money-destroying misfeature.

Coinbase Commerce seems to have lightning, and it's just 1% fee. Not too bad really. I always assumed it was custodial only.

Their service changed some time ago with little publication, so it's not surprising you only know the old custodial version.

Don't forget to look about they handle underpay, overpay or refunds request. I didn't find much about those on their documentation.

Which is what I'd probably do to get the functionality requested in the original post. Since that's exactly what those apps do.

I just checked their release page[1] and found out initial release was only about 4 months. The project only have 3 contributor, so it's not very surprising they don't implement Neutrino or Electrum protocol.

Which is what I'd probably do to get the functionality requested in the original post. Since that's exactly what those apps do.

By the way; Core Lightning has this open issue [Planning for SPV backend#3858], but it doesn't seem like it went anywhere since 2020.

I also found an interesting post about this online:
You can run c-lightining with a large variety of Bitcoin backend plugins to integrate it into your existing infrastructure.

I'm not aware of an existing plugin for neutrino, but it'd be relatively simple to build one. I myself have used the following backends:
  • bcli: the default backend plugin that c-lightining ships with. It talks to either a local or remote bitcoind, and may work with pruned nodes too, as long as the sync height doesn't drop below the pruned height.
  • bcli + spruned: lightweight proxy that sits in front of a pruned bitcoind, pretending to be a full bitcoind node, fetching pruned blocks on demand from peers
  • trustedcoin: a plugin that just fetches the necessary information on public blockexplorers. This is likely the most lightweight option, but comes with some level of trust towards the explorer operators.
  • btc-rpc-proxy + bcli: another proxy like spruned, that will fetch missing blocks on demand.
  • Btcli4j: another plugin that is backed by a combination of pruned nodes and explorers.
So there's quite a few options, depending on your own preferences you might trust explorers enough so that you done have to run a Bitcoin node at all giving you a very lightweight experience. Pruned bitcoind + on demand fetching of blocks is a middle ground and full bitcoind node involves the least trust.

Neutrino fwiw is not a good fit for LN: it is lightweight because it fetches only blocks that are interesting to the node. A block is interesting to the node if a) one of it's transactions is included, or b) some channel in the network was opened or closed. If you verify channel opens and closes pretty much every block will be interesting to you, and you'll download every block, making the neutrino negotiation useless overhead. If you don't verify opens and closes you're basically trusting others to be honest or verify them on your behalf.

I have never heard of Mycelium Gear before. It looks very promising, as it's non-custodial, open source, has plugins for websites, and you can even get it for free for up to 0.1BTC a month. Really interesting. The only downside I can see about it is that it doesn't seem to support lightning.

Coinbase Commerce seems to have lightning, and it's just 1% fee. Not too bad really. I always assumed it was custodial only.

@NotATether : i agree with DaveF but also wanted to add that if you want to setup something like btcpayserver manually (which i did), it's also quite a bit of configuration and it'll also take a while before you get things running smoothly...
I guess setting up a merchant system is always a bit complex, it's usually not for an enduser Wink

I know you can run btcpayserver inside a container (witch btcpayserver authors actually recommend), but i don't like to run financial services without knowing exactly how they work, and exactly how they were set up Smiley

Electrum's daemon is a bare-bones payment processor though, you can configure it to send QR codes and addresses to a webpage, but it doesn't track the payments to each user (so there's no refund functionality), and also you have to set up the TLS certificate yourself and put it inside the daemon so it's an error-prone process - you can't use things like Certbot, and browsers will make obnoxious warnings if you attmpt to fill in a self-signed cert.


You should never be running it on the server talking to the public. For security everything should be sitting in private IP space and then you run something to talk back to it.

This also takes care of the SSL requests with certbot or whatever else you are doing.
Just a bit more security. Not just for BTC put all websites in general.

There is also lightweight alternative for BTCPayServer that is called CypherpunkPay.
It is also open source, Lightning is supported, it's easier to set up and it can work just fine even with cheap $5 VPS, that is not so easy to do with older brother BTCPayServer.
Running a full node is encouraged but not required by CypherpunkPay.

In theory you give up a bit of security with that, and if the API calls / HTML changes you would have to update CypherpunkPay to get to the new locations / data.
But, it is a quick and simple way to take BTC payments.
YMMV if doing it that way works for you, since you are at that point relying on external services. That you are not paying for (not a big deal) but can change forcing you to update.

Personally I would do something like mocacinno suggested, but there are other ways too.
Also, the amounts you would be getting should change your approach.
Many small payments you might be better off using a BTCPay server. There are places out there that will host them for free or very little money.
A few large payments, then you may want to actually go for a full node and just deal with the cost and issues because it is for larger amounts of money.
