I don't feel comfortable giving a third party access to my account or messages, as would most people I think. All sorts of scripts and add-ons turn rouge once they get enough users.
It runs inside your own web browser, so if you aren't logged in, the messages can't be loaded. You can always checkout the source code once it's installed. It's not like a Chrome Extension. But yeah, I get why you wouldn't want that.

Install Bitcointalk++. It has a feature that loads all your inbox messages. Once installed, click on the "BT++ Settings"-tab and there you will find a link named "List of your PMs". Let it load all your messages (sometimes it hangs, just refresh the page) and save the page once it's done. Now you have backup-ed all your Inbox PM's.

No but there really should be one.

I would think the people who conduct business would have hundreds of pages worth of messages and the search function for PMs is really not very good, and people could create their own DB of their PMs if they could be downloaded

Surely a download feature would be useful but the search function is pretty easy:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=search

It sucks, you can't search just by user to see any pm's sent or received, have to put something to search for so it's kind of useless.

Indeed, so frustrating!

But what about odd communications that don't contain that particular glyph?

That idea is fine, but I don't have time to implement it right now.

Put just "e" in the search box.

I have 734 pages of PMs. It's sometimes a little difficult to navigate, though generally not too bad. I do resort to SQL queries sometimes, so I can understand why someone would want a dump of all of the messages for more in-depth searching/analysis.

Is there a reason why you can't search by user? I would think that many people (including staff/moderators) would need this search functionality more then being able to search for specific terms within the body of messages
