So I just chose the withdraw option on Poloniex and gave the Bittrex's provided BTC wallet address. Is the transfer going to work or have I just done something stupid?

P.S. The status on poloniex transaction is "complete" however the status on bittrex still shows pending. Is this normal? Any ideas how long this will take?
It's normal. Perhaps the confirmation in bittrex isn't yet confirmed though it's already confirmed in Poloniex. You just need to wait for the confirmation and the status will be confirmed in bittrex's side.

Yes it is possible when you are trying to arbitrage. Bitcoin wallets can receive any incoming funds from another address regardless of who owns it. Though just to keep in mind, you need to pay the most appropriate fee for the tx to get it confirmed in the next block so as not to miss any price swigs when you are arbitraging. Best of luck.

Transferring bitcoin into another exchange site platform was very a possible things, and it is usually common happen. So, By doing it from polonoex to bittrex is just a normal case, all you need is to wait only for the confirmation. That's it!

To add my voice to you post, like others has replied you here I think you should relax your mind and let the network has it cost. I have do such transactions several times and it went through and your case will not be different.

The pending status of the transaction is normal, this depends on the network but does not take much time since the transaction fees have been paid.
Once the bitcoin address is correct, you will receive your bitcoins, but sometime it will come late it depends on how much fee you paid for that transaction. If you paid a high fee or at least mid level fee, you will receive your coins within few hours. If you low fee then it will take a long time. Somtimes your bad luck the transaction will not confirm it happens for many bitcoin users. But now I feel this issue is solved let wait for some time you will get your bitcoins.

Just reading the subject of this thread, I thought something else like moving bitcoins across exchanges but in off-chain mode.

There are exchanges which are allowing moving cryptocurrencies/funds to another account but within their exchange by using account-name and/or by providing codes. This helps to prevent lots of hassles like procedures while withdrawing, waiting time for approval and more importantly saving tx fees.

If exchanges allows moving funds to other other exchange and gambling sites in off-chain mode, I believe there could be lot of conveniences a crypto user may enjoy.
But why not implement such function by LN? because it's practically the same thing right? it will however serve not just the exchange and casino users but every body, and there is this problem with the exchanges to trust each other when it comes to large amounts and when small transactions start accumulating to form a considerable amount which makes this system vulnerable to abuse and theft unless it's implemented on the source code of Bitcoin.

I think it's possible because exchanges like poloniex and bittrex has those functionality as long as you give the full details like the wallet address that has been provided by the exchanger. This is just very normal it shows pending cause the transaction is still confirming so dont panic and just patiently wait for it, im sure it will get confirmed in 5-10 minutes. One of the benefits in using an exchanger is you dont have to pay high transaction fees just to confirmed it faster cause if you use exchangers to send btc it will get confirmed quickly unlike web wallets. Just be careful not to input an wrong address.

That is very normal because it just shows pending because the wallet may not sync to the blockchain record that fast and just after 5-10 minutes, I think it will completely show to your account. That is normal in most of the exchanges but always be careful because some of the common mistakes of transferring bitcoin to another wallet is wrong address so double check before you send some bitcoin.

Yes, it is going to work – when you provide an address, it doesn't matter where it is from (an address is an address) as long as it is the actual address which you are sending to.

The status on any exchange shows whether the transaction has been sent to the blockchain or not, it doesn't show if it reached its destination. It varies, depending on the speed of the confirmation and the number of confirmations needed.

Grab the transaction id and search for it in a bitcoin explorer as mentioned above.

If your transaction is not appearing in the block explorer, open a ticket with Poloniex.

If your transaction is not confirmed then wait a bit.

If your transaction has more than 6 confirmations, open a ticket with Bittrex with the transaction id.

A BTC transaction needs at least 6 confirmations before it arrives at its destination.

Enter the BTC address that you sent the funds to into this page https://blockexplorer.com and see how many confirmations its received
