Vpn does not affect speed for the better, vpn can only reduce speed. Such a low speed is not the norm. When I have any problems with the Internet, then when I contact the support of the provider, the problem is quickly resolved. But maybe you have some special case

VPN will help you with your work but it will not increase the spread of the internet. I think it's a problem with their server You can see them talking on the server.
Its the issue of ISP who doesn't provide the enough inernet speed.I also faced these years ago like when OP asked I got 100Mbps connection but actual speed will be 1Mbps.

I agree with you but I think it's because of the ISP's problem. The actual speed at the Internet connection line is 100 Mbps instead of 1 Mbps. However, this is usually the case with the modem, but the speed is slow. I also encountered this problem.
Modem is just the conversion tool so I don't think it is the reason for speed gets decreases.

i am using a 1mbps unlimited bandwidth wimex internet connection via a modem

usually my speed is ~100kb/s

however during dinner time where i am most likely to use or peak hour my speed is less then 10kb/s

which is 10% of 1mbps

i believe my isp is throttling me and a vpn might solves this?

this frustrates me as i cant even open gmail

If that's a WiMAX service i think it may be bandwidth shared, and because its wireless you can imagine there could be LOTS of people. If your connection works perfect at, say 3am, it probably means you are not being throttled but simply those were the peak use hours.

Actual throttling tend to be content based, and it would slow down at any hour (or several, in the daytime for instance).

I'm currently forced to use a very capped mobile service, i wish i had something unlimited right now, no matter how slow. This has forced me to browse the web without images (with uMatrix since i was already blocking trackers and other pests).

Gmail has a "basic html" mode when you open it, try using that is its a lot faster. Or use an imap email client like thunderbird.

Good news is, you can now enjoy your dinner properly, and later use the internet...

Adding a VPN might not help you for sure.
Thee best think you can do is to contact your provider in order to set your speed on a fixed pace of 100kb/s - the problem is theirs not yours.

Yes, absolutely, this is frustrating and a VPN can definitely defeat ISP throttling activities and you can enjoy unrestricted and blazing fast internet speeds.

your ISP is not throttling your connections, it's normal.

During night time, more people are at home= more people using the internet.
Get better plans

The problem is that there might not be better plans for that, or it might be too costly to get a better plan. So far, in our country the average speed we get is 3Mbps/~$25 a month.

It's crap, we know and we're annoyed.

1mb is extremely slow to begin with, VPN does actually stop throttling, but it's only going to be useful for people who have a fast connection, as others have said, unfortunately, more than likely you'll be getting a poor connection and because you're only on 1mb that's going to affect you a lot more than if you were on a 10mb connection for example if there's a loss in speed.

You'll be much better off if you find a way to upgrade your connection, also, changing your provider to one that doesn't throttle your speed in the first place is always a good idea but you have to research them carefully first.

how does webpage test increase your speed , they only will tell what speed you have now.

I think what hes talking about is a webpage like this that actually tells you if your internet traffic is getting trafic shaped by your provider.

https://www.battleforthenet.com/internethealthtest/

A speed test website is different in that it tells you your bandwidth whereas this tells you your routing.

To be fair this doesnt sound like throttling, Usually throttling is put in place if you are a high bandwidth user but your on a 1 mb connection, Im guessing you live somewhere with extremely poor internet service and everyone else is just dragging down your connection in that area due to jumping on their internet at peak times. I have an 80 meg connection and it still drops down a bit lower at peak times but not due to throttling only die to the high demand at the time.

Id change provider if i could though i mean 1 mb i s pretty dire.
