Gridcoin http://www.gridcoin.us (rewards BOINC computation) has had GPU support for a while now. Why waste electricity on hashing with your GPU when you could be contributing to real scientific research?

If you've got Nvidia you can crunch:
GPUgrid: Full-atom molecular simulations of proteins
Asteroids@home: Asteroid research - it uses photometric measurements of asteroids observed by professional big all-sky surveys as well as 'backyard' astronomers. The data is processed using the lightcurve inversion method and a 3D shape model of an asteroid together with the rotation period and the direction of the spin axis are derived.

If you've got AMD you can crunch:
Milkyway@home: Creation of a 3d map of the milkyway galaxy using data gathered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This project enables research in both astroinformatics and computer science.
POEM@HOME: Models protein folding using Anfinsen's dogma

There's also some multi-gpu compatible projects:
Collatz Conjecture: Attempting to disprove the Collatz Conjecture
Einstein@home: Search for spinning neutron (pulsars) stars using data from the LIGO gravitational-wave detectors, the Arecibo radio telescope, and the Fermi gamma-ray satellite
PrimeGrid: Search for prime numbers. Primes play a central role in the cryptographic systems which are used for computer security. Through the study of prime numbers it can be shown whether current security schemes are sufficiently secure.
SETI@home: Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI)

Probably because Gridcoin is an absolute nightmare to setup, the wallet takes hours to days to sync and the money you make is rarely even enough to pay for electricity.

Not saying it's not a lofty idea, but most people here aren't going to jump through those hoops to lose money or barely break even. I love the idea of Gridcoin, but in its current state? Not so much.

Ethereum is still mineable with the GPU rig. In fact it is still the most profitable coin even after price drop.

thanks for recommending me to use nicehash - exactly what i needed!

mining this beast at 71Mh on x11
0.03 btc/day

i got a question tho.. is it upto nicehash to change the algo that these gpus are mining at? can the algo change by itself? basically i need to know whether just leave the clocks at stock or have it clocked optimally for x11?

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/--7216

You can set it to mine X11 only or you can use the multpool mode, so Nichhash can change to the optimum algorithm for you.

For the time being, Ethererum is the most profitable coin to mine. But we can only mine it for no more than 10 months.

If you already have the graphics cards, then you can mine Ethereum. If you do not have, do not buy those cards.

I want to mine BCN using my GPUs. does anyone has a link to some guide and software?

get the mining software from the OP of this thread

Can I actually trust this software? When I download it my Antivirus alerts me saying it is a malicious file...

Miners always flag AV. Usually false positive, but you can't be sure. Claymore's software is probably okay though, if you get it directly from him.

There are also open source cryptonote miners now.

NV: https://github.com/tsiv/ccminer-cryptonight
AMD: https://github.com/wolf9466/wolf-xmr-miner

Is Wolf's AMD miner slower than claymore's?

Yes, You can still mine the GPU rig. Select from the pool of new coins being released. Mine it. Hold it. Sell it on exchanges once the coin hits an exchange. It's all profit. So keep your rigs safe and mine new coins of your choice. Convert them into btc later. But if you think selling that hardware is profitable than mining. I would suggest you to sell it.

That will happen with nearly all mining programs as they contain the mining software (which mostly causes such kind of alerts).
If you dowload it from the OP (Claymore's link), you should be save. Just don't download from unreliable sources or quoted posts.

I would not mine with my GPU.
It's one of the vital parts of your pc, and you won't earn real money by wasting your energy and GPU card.

Definitely,
GPU rigs can be put to use on (alt) coin mining. Specifically non-Sha 256 coins, or other ASIC resistant coins.

I'm very new to alt coin mining, on average how many Mh/s can you get from an AVERAGE GPU?

GPU works well on Ethereum, X11, 13, 15 and cryptonote coins. There is no ASIC for those coins yet. Ethereum and Cryptonote are ASIC resistant.

Cheesy  Yeah after lookin around I got it!!! 670GTX gets 4.5 mhs  Roll Eyes

Gonna see what my 6950 & 7970 get  Wink

BTW,I didn't fill this in & it still works, but what goes here Huh  yourhashrate.in.MH  As I have no idea what my cards will do until I run em.......

Thanks!!!  Cool

NVM,figured that out  Cheesy

If your card for example is hashing at 10 MH/s you put that into your Hasher URL. You will always see lots of "got work package" as the miner is simply working on the packages and if its able to solve a package, it will submit it to the pool. If it solved a package, it gets submitted with a certain difficulty, the pool and the difficulty algorithm calculates the "lost" packages in - so you'll also get some amount for that packages, so it is nothing to worry about, thats how Difficulty works

Just for info:

6950 will not work. 7970 should get around 23 Mh/s. 7970 is the most efficient and best value for money card for Ethereum mining.

im finally having some spare time soon and its time to dust off two of my custom gpu rigs that were waiting for almost two years. one is 6x r9 290, another is 4x 7970. the elecy is free.
could anyone please enlighten me whether there is any point to do any of it? i know that the asics took over scrypt. but is there any other gpu only coins out there that i can mine? im confused with all the miner software and pools out there. can anyone please direct me towards a descent multipool perhaps?
i installed the minergate software but it wont detect the gpus.. so much changed in two years.
thank you.

You can use the rigs to mine Ethereum. That is the most profitable coin to mine. Otherwise you can mine X11 or quark and sell your hash to Nichhash.

Got a tutorial on mining Ethereum Huh

No one seems to want to share that info   Cry

Did you try the "Get Started" way?
