Don't that count as deleted? For deleted post, we used to receive a PM in our inbox. I'm not sure but logically there should be a PM for a thread trashed. Correct me if I'm wrong; I can't remember if I have seen such info anywhere.

Yep, just that we won't get to find out who removed it so we're left with the guessing game.

It doesn't. When a thread is trashed, it has simply moved to the "Trashcan" board [it's only accessible to staff, mods and admins] and global moderators or admins can easily restore it.
- IIRC, such cases won't show up in the "mod log/deletion log".
That may be true and could be the reason why the deleted thread was not notified of any kind to the PM. I really don't know the specific reason beforehand why the thread was deleted without notification, but you have explained it very well. This will be a future reference to answer users' doubts when the number of posts has decreased.

Out of curiosity, if a moderator edits those within the 10-minute window, is it still going to reflect below the time?

Since I was not 100% sure I have now tested it. Here is the result:

When I edit other people's posts there is no such time limit. Edits are logged.

If you hover your mouse over the time e.g. "Today at 13:00:57" below the title you will see the info who last edited the post.
you can check any post when it was edited, and by whom.

Afaik, when a moderator delete a post there will be a notification to the PM and an email associated with your account, but when the moderator delete a thread and all post in it, there is no notification to the PM or to an email. If you are observant and accustomed to counting post then you will know that the number of your post will be lost. I don't know why we are never notified when moderator delete thread like when they delete post. But so far, I don't mind it. Just curious about the reason.

But when a thread/ post gets trashed, none of those affected would know who did it

Moderators must leave a trail when they perform the act of merging user posts that violate rule 23. This can tell the offending poster and other users that it was the act of the moderator and not someone other than the mod or poster who did it. At least there's nothing other than posters and moderators can't do because we're on the internet and this bounty can be used as a reason why bugs can still happen. But for the OP's case, it's clear that the moderators did.

$10 000: If you can make undetectable edits to arbitrary posts or PMs. Compromising a moderator account doesn't count.

I occasionally report to moderators that rule 32 was violated. Posting multiple posts. Some users, participating in subscription campaigns, either increase the number of posts in this way or do not know about Rule 23. After my reports, moderators always combine messages, separating them with a line, and leaving notes on editing.

Recently i have seen few posts merged together (maybe by the mods).
[moderator's note: consecutive posts merged]
It is not new but in history, rules to merge topics, threads, posts have been changed many times.

(Moderators no longer have the ability to merge topics due to incidents like this.)

Only admins can merge threads, and it's only done for technical reasons such as an accidentally-split post. Merging similar threads together just makes a big mess; if too many topics about the same thing are posted, the extras should just be locked or deleted.

When merging, you merge from a topic into another topic. You don't add two topics and get a new topic. So it'll be whatever the destination topic is. When splitting, the new topic is not self-moderated. If you move a topic to a section where topics cannot be self-moderated, it loses its self-moderated status for as long as it is in such a section.

Split example
Theymos split the thread and the split off part was moved to Archive. Not sure why it went to Archive, as it's more suited for the Trashcan, but whatever. I asked for this as the last 284 were pointless and no longer relevant (and thus spam).

As said above, it's not new feature, but mods probably don't use it very often and this is why most users here aren't aware about it.
In other forums I saw that mods using it more often. In most cases they merge consecutive posts, remove dangerous links or resize too big images.
I think it's default feature on SMF.

Mining board admin was the only one where you find him modifying a lot of posts, locking them or actively removing them, a behaviour that I did not notice in many boards, as most of mods/global mods delete the posts.
I remember that was a topic where @theymos himself edited part (back to 2013-2017) of the topic, but I don't know which posts were. any way this not happen in general.

so it is old option but I think check who last edited the post is new Grin feature (from 2017 or 2018 Huh)

Moderators within their own sections have the ability to edit any post, although this generally doesn't happen, and is transparent to the public whenever it does happen as mole0815 explains above, you can check any post when it was edited, and by whom. Obviously, global moderators probably have the ability to edit anywhere on the forum.

The only time I've personally seen, and edited posts myself is when there's multiple posts in a row, which would be better to be combined, than to be deleted as it could destroy the flow of the rest of the thread. Mprep, and I generally put a note in red stating we've edited it just to make it more apparent. This is a courtesy, and not really a requirement. Though, we do tend to avoid editing posts whenever possible, because of obvious reasons.

In short; not a new feature, and it's using the same way that you would edit your own post.

In the post you quoted, it was mprep - and the red text is his style to indicate that he intervened.

It's definitely by the moderator basing on the moderator's note. lol

I always thought of it as a moderator-dependent "style" on keeping the forum clean and neat by reducing posts or something. That's just my initial thought on the matter though.
