This could be bad for bitcoin reputation... Hope this clears up OK (and quickly!)
I think overall people will be angry at the DDOS attackers and not bitcoin itself. ANY website or company can be attacked with way.

Any company can be DDOS'd and I work for a large hosting company with data centers all over the world.  We are able to mitigate attacks with ANYCAST.  Also many sites use Cloud Flare now in the same way.  Somehow I don't think Mt Gox is investing enough in their infrastructure.  If this DDOS was taking down a site spread out like the one against Spamhaus it would be all over the news.  So in other words as someone who hosts for a living Mt Gox is pissing me off at the moment.

Google news resulted in 7 results for ddos mtgox and this has been going on for two days.

Bad for mt. Gox reputation, The Bitcoin protocol will just chug along.

You and I know that, but I don't trust these media types to make the distinction.

In any case, at least its cleared up.  Now, where were we...?  Smiley

Doesn't use these forums that often.

first of all, I have no reasons to test my network. Secondly, I protect 5 petabytes of data for a living, so I should know better uh? Smiley
Again, don't underestimate the people around this forums, many newbies for sure, but I'm not one of them. Smiley

It's pretty hard to guess proficiency of forum strangers, just judging by whatever little info you give out! Peace.

PS I hope it's 5 petabytes of porn otherwise why would you protect it Smiley

LOL... at home I have a 5 TB NAS, I can assure you porn occupies a very small percentage of it hahahaha
If I had 5 petabytes at home to protect, I wouldn't have that at home to begin with! Smiley that's the company I work for Smiley

I admire you. (deathcode)

I get scanned like crazy and I get around 20-30 attempts per day to access my systems, I cannot even imagine MTGox!

Every ip on the internets is scanned for wide open holes, it's not targeted. MtGox I'm sure gets targeted attention from a skillful audience, quite a different beast - for example, your regular home server would've been rooted in hours if not minutes by a targeted attack.

And considering how cheap a huge amount of DDOS traffic is, and how much money is at stake, no wonder they get blown to pieces if they can't be directly broken into.

Bitcoin is new, makes sense to hodl.
If it's a DDOS, it only means that some parties trying to get into bitcoin, but their fund's not ready, so they nuke the web to keep it at bay, if so we should see $300 soon

It's not fair.  I can't get at those cheap cheap bitcoins.  It'll be $1000/btc by the end of the month.  We're going exponential people.  Chase that asymptote.

Does that mean next month will never happen? Smiley

The web site works just fine.  If it's a case of MtGox being spammed with bids and cancellations, why do they allow so many per user per second?  Just ban the HFT.

They just tweeted

"Hello,

Due to high volume trading at the moment, there is a lag in trading and order cancellation."

4 hours and counting - Oh wait, that's deposits.
