I suggest reading meta. But Theymos has been trusted with the forum... a big task. And he keeps it online and even plans for a big update.

There is no doubt he is intrusted with a lot. But considering amount he watches over seems like a good pick as no problem over BTC from forum or other possible problems.

Theymos controls bitcointalk and r/bitcoin which are very important communication outlets for Bitcoin. As far as I know he is not interested in altcoins.
As for his successor, I'm not sure if anyone has the power to take over if something happens. Even if he had given someone such power/right he would keep it secret.
He's very professional and helpful. I would say that this thread should be in meta.
