Before I retired I was an "IT Guru" with the US Federal Government where I had my own computer room.  I absolutely loved the hands on stuff.  I started out with 4 S5s in my garage and I very quickly realized that those things simply were not suitable for the home environment.  After a couple of test sites, I settled on a data center 2,958 miles away in Washington State.  It's not a distance thing at all because I can log directly into the cgminer on each rig and do 99% of everything I need to do right there.  If I need boots on the ground, a quick email to Toomim Brothers and they usually recycle power (or whatever) in less than 5 minutes!  They are masters at hosting BTC equipment and are very transparent (think kano and ck running a data center in the US).  For the resources, it costs me the exact same thing with them as I was paying in electricity at my house so that part is unnoticeable.  I sleep good at night knowing my 9 S7s and 4 S5s are well taken care of...the only problem I ever have is they keep it so cold that I have to crank my fans down to 25-30% to keep the error rates at a normal level  Cheesy

Well, that's the kicker. I don't pay for power. If I had to, the kwh rate here is almost US$.50, and I'd be tracking down a vendor in minutes (btw, thanks for the reference...will keep it in mind). Ridiculous, as it does not cost anywhere near that much to produce even with the imported naptha for the generators (and it's supposed to be a co-op). The owner here went PV ten years ago when it was still really new, and got a sweetheart deal with the installer where they're paying something like $.15/kwh, and because we're all disabled seniors and mostly veterans, they get a modest federal subsidy on even that...so they can afford to include the power with the rent. It ain't making me rich or anything, but it's giving me a nest egg I would not otherwise be able to acquire after losing literally everything nine years ago. That's why I'm so gung-ho for BTC. I know a dozen others in my situation who are considering it; so long as things remain reasonably stable after the halving (as it basically did last time) all of them are working out how to afford their first machine so they can begin saving, basically, because none of us have a fiat income worth a horse's snort. I'll be helping them as I can with setup and teaching them how to manage it wisely and safely. Should be fun.

The 40PH we are running at the last few days is awesome. Sad to see the payments per block go down but the increase in blocks will make up for it. Might just have to buy more machine to make up for the lower payment..lol

Saw your post, too, phillipma...I figured out how to squeeze another S7 into my grid, so I'll be picking one up the first of the month. That'll be the absolute max for this house, though. Four S7s and 2 S3s running (with an S2 and four more S3s that will be sitting in reserve). I'll get it from BiteMe (oops...did I say that? Roll Eyes ) but that will be the last one, probably...unless I can figure out how to plug a pair of S3s into the refrigerator circuit (dedicated...it doesn't use the whole 20 amps) or another S7 into the breaker that runs the lights in the BR/LR (again, only using about 300w of a 2kw circuit). I'd rather have one prior to Batch 16 (one with two fans...the two B16s I have now work OK, but run 10C hotter and are 15db louder, and being in the tropics the heat factor is critical), but whatever is available then via BTC will work. I should be able to pull around 19-20TH/s then, and it will be maintenance forward from there.

I'm not sure I would be willing to go to this far if there wasn't the confidence in this pool operation. I've been monitoring Slush (was with them for quite a while) and they don't seem to be doing well at all, which was also my experience that brought me here.

Find a host site...before you burn your island shack down!  Cheesy  I have found it is easier to add a little at a time as profit grows and never having to worry about heat, noise, or amp capacity by keeping my rigs at a data center.  And profit has been higher here at kano!

No worries. Not gonna burn anything down. I'm 2,500 miles from the nearest continent. I'm 200 miles from O'ahu (Honolulu...I live in Kekaha village, on the far west end of Kaua'i Island...my apt complex is the LAST such building before French Frigate Shoals and Midway). This entire project was started with a Radeon 290x running on my workstation; except for the S2 (bought used from another miner in HNL last year), all my hardware has been paid for 80% by BTC, up until the last S7, and that was all BTC. I don't have the resources to use a datacenter, if there was even one available within a reasonable distance. My own problem, of course, is that I don't trust anyone else managing my BTC operation (with the exception of Kano and CK in this instance...but then, the pool is Kano's operation, not mine). I have a contract with a hosting company that I have come to trust that has worked well, as I host several websites, but I wouldn't make the same profit using them for this application.

And, I really don't have a helluva lot else to keep my self "busy" these days, so I might as well make a little money whilst lounging.

EDIT: ...in my "personal" data center... Cool

you know I was looking at coins pushing 465  and the next diff under 2%

I wondered do I get 1 or 2 s-7's

Even though I no longer buy from them since they never fixed my batch 1 issue.  It is tempting.
