Considering the fact that the only opponent of Messi was Ronaldo then yes it was very well deserved.
I want to see new players competing for the Golden Ball. There are 11 years that only Messi and Ronaldo gets rewarded. Young talents should be rewarded as well in order to keep them motivated to continue playing with top performance.
In fact, the general performance for all season-period within the last season and the current one has decreased gradually. Cristiano Ronaldo has still be one of the best play, a super star, who can change match results with one striking moment but as I said his general performance decreased as unavoidable consequence of his ages.

Messi is younger than Ronaldo so it is fair to see his performance remains at higher level than Ronaldo's. I think soon (next one or three years), we will no longer mention about the competition between Messi and Ronaldo for Ballon Dor'

The conspiracy theory is a thing since it seems that we have a photo from a journalist of their votes, changed who knows who from their paper to the computer.

Like always, Golden Ball award provoke lot of discussions.
It's obvious that Messi had another amazing season with so many goals and assists. But his teams (Barca and Argentina failed again in major competition.

For the same reason, the previous golden ball should be for Ronaldo if this one went to Messi.
2 years ago Cr7 did an amazing season with a ton of goals, the reward to Modric was a Joke.

The conpirency theory is that real uses his power to do anything they can do to "damage" cr7.

No, you guys thinking too much! Although seeing Ramos, Marcelo and Modric in FIFA Best XI this year indicates that Real Madrid commands too much power over these awards ceremony but still Modric's win wasn't Real's attempt to damage Ronaldo's image.

The real reason why Modric won last year is because journalists give too much importance to international trophies. Why do you think among all Man City players, Mahrez and Bernardo Silva made to Top 10 this year? It is because both of them won international trophies (Mahrez won African Cup, Silva won Nations League). Similarly FIFA World Cup had huge impact on journalists' voting last year. Modric was suddenly hyped and came to spotlight after scoring stunner against Argentina in group round, then he and his team went to Finals. Although it was collective effort of the team, but we football fans have tendency to find hero in every team. Thus fans chose Modric to be that hero for Croatia and his reputation escalated pretty quickly. Suddenly he became most underrated player of the world, people forgot the brilliance Messi (he was awesome in league but played awful in CL and Internationals) and Ronaldo did that year.

That's the reason why Modric won, bandwagon effect. Even Virgil was pumped this year due to bandwagon effect, he was good but not extra-ordinary. For me Sadio Mane played better than him last season. But people's tendency to find hero made Vigil, the Hero of Liverpool.

That's serious accusation. The conspiracy theory always there no matter how small the chance that the conspiracy itself could be true Grin .
I assumed that you do aware that the ballon d'Or awarded based on international journalists votes, national team coaches votes and some captains votes I guess ...
Real madrid really mean it 'to do everything' to destroy cr7 Grin , what kind action they have done to those journalists, coaches and captains around the globe to not selected cristiano hmmm? A couple millions euros ? Grin must be worth it lol

Anyways...

Today la liga match I interested to betting on :

Villareal vs atletico madrid
Everyone must be choose atletico to win @2.3 , FYI they have bad history against villareal , becareful..
Under 1.5 goals got me thinking with the low odds @3 , will give it a try later once one of them scored 1 goal , I'll immediately bet for under 1.5 goals , must be a decent odds Grin

I somehow doubt that Real would ever use his power to gift reward to Messi who is symbol of their biggest rival Barca. I could believe in that conspiracy if Van Dijk was the winner.
@Trofo you are right its not a big deal just rumour that Real use his power to damage CR7 world watching all who is how is doing.

I love Messi, because he is Barca and Barca is Messi. But even I think VVD should have won the award this time, because those types of seasons come once in a lifetime for most footballers. But does Messi deserve it? Anyone in top 5 probably deserves it. Anyone nominated probably does.

But we all know it is a silly popularity contest in the end. Ronaldo has a fading star and Messi admitted himself at the awards he knows his time is coming. So let us all enjoy these guys while we still can. And forget that they also get these awards that mean something and also mean nothing.

I couldn't agree any less with you, Of course VVD was phenomenal last season, but in all its entirety Messi performance was equally has incredible to say the least, but the truth is that Messi and Ronaldo have both raised the bar so high that performance like that of Messi during the last season is seen as the norm for both players, but If an average players does that, the praises for them will be next to none.
Both Messi and Ronaldo are becoming victims of their own performance.

I think Messi deserved it this year and now he has 6 Golden Ball titles in his career. This year he has scored 32 goals so far with Barcelona which is a very good number of goals and not only this but he has also given many assists to his friends this year,a performance which is a great one.I think even Christiano agrees to this.

I don't want to repeat myself but Leo did everything to win it. Just watch highlights from the games that were his biggest flops this year. Semifinals against Liverpool in UCL and Brazil in Copa America:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6uuun5tdyg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9n7TcAqpZSs

He really played in his own, beautiful, amazing manner. Made his teammates better, made his teams better, made the matches themselves better. He didn't win? He's not the only player on the pitch, not to mention coaches (Barcelona) or referees (Brazil).

Maybe if Cristiano led Portugal to at least semis in last year's World Cup, historical justice would had been done. They both deserve as much praise and awards as possible. They led football itself at the unbelievable level for more than a decade. Mark my words that it's practically impossible that the world of football would see something similar and similarly amazing. At least in our lifetimes.

Messi was phenomenal this year and with no Ronaldo to challenge him in La Liga it was but obvious that Messi would be winning it this year. Also it’s pertinent to note that had Ronaldo had a more productive season with Juventus and Portugal things would have been very different but then again for one reason or anotherother he was unable to play to his full potential. However next season I’m sure an wounded Ronaldo will try to do his best to win it back from Messi don’t you’ll think.

Thank you for reminding me of that game. It was an outrage that the game with this stake, with these two teams, at this level were forced to play at the parody of the pitch on that day. Sad and scandalous.

Van Dijk had amazing season and it might be his only chance in life to win this trophy. He is in similar situation like Iniesta or Robben - other players becames underrated in comparison with Messi and Ronaldo.
@Naida_BR, discussion who is better, Ronaldo or Messi can be endless. Ok, Messi don't have trophy with national team, it's strong argument. But c'mon, this guy break almost every possible record, scores +30 goals every season. Do he have to do this on rainy cold night in Stoke to become best?
But this year it's not worth to talk about Ronaldo much, it's enough to look at his stats in Serie A

People always think Messi is just a system player and he is only good in Barcelona and have been saying that for years now. Messi is a great player wherever he plays but if you do not put players at the same level around him then he can't do anything, it is a 11 player game and if you do not have 10 decent players on the field then Messi alone is not enough. This all comes from how Argentina has been unsuccessful with Messi so far and people only saw Messi with Argentina except Barcelona, so they say Messi is only good with one system.

Nobody realizes that Messi has managed to break almost every important record for a La Liga player with so many different teammates and different coaches as well. Thankfully he plays good enough even at his old age to prove haters how much they are wrong.

It is not what people say - it is what he shows all those years when he plays with Argentina.
Ronaldo is more complete player and better than Messi. See what he can do with Portugal - a team with medium quality players (compared to those that Barcelona and Real have).

Messi needed just a single moment to change the game completely, he really deserves to be crowned the 2019 Ballon D'or winner because of magical moments like this.

It is not magical. Lots of players are doing the same thing for their team. Scoring in the 90th minute every now and then. By this standard, then they should win Ballon D'or too then.

Not saying Messi didn't deserve it, but lots of players can achieve the same thing. No need to glorify him too much.

Messi had cowardly Valverde as his coach. That's what gives gives him one more rival than in the case of other top players. And it practically end the case.

Barca would have won a triple with other coach but wouldn't have won anything without Messi as well. That's for sure.

I say that for a reason, I am a supporter of Real Madrid.
Messi can only play well in Barcelona right? not in another Club.
Messi is a prized possession and no team will let him go unless he wants to leave the club and Messi is really comfortable with the club and even yesterday we saw a magic from the legend to win the match against Atletico Madrid in the 86th minute and a player of his caliber will always perform in any continent.
Messi needed just a single moment to change the game completely, he really deserves to be crowned the 2019 Ballon D'or winner because of magical moments like this. Atletico Madrid had their chances into the game but their inability to convert it mainly due to Ter Stegen brilliance made them loss the game.
