I've heard that you also risk overheating your laptop and frying it. Any truth to this??

No point, the hash rate is too low and what is more, laptops are far more susceptible to heat problem.   You will spoilt your laptop in no time.

Pretty much this. You might lose the laptop to heat.

I've been doing it for a couple weeks now, mostly at a loss, I'm assuming. I'm averaging about 35-40 M/h using GUIminer, and with the folks over at triplemining.com (mostly for the lottery). I'm considering going back to Slush's pool, but lately I've noticed that they've been having issues, with shares and what not.

I have two BFL Jalapenos on the way, an April 2013 order, and a May 2013 order, should I use $200 to upgrade ($100 each) my Jalapenos, or drop $50 more, and buy an indefinite mining contract from the likes of cloudhashing.com?
I would trust the Jalapenos more than the laptop or cloudhashing. It is worth a try, not too expensive and you can use it with your laptop.
