It shows that one is ready improve when he's learning from from other people's mistakes because he will also not want to be a victim of such a revolting issue.
Moreover, as a beginner on crypto currency investments or business you must be a person that's aways keep vigilant on scam or links that's flying. Sorry to hear this.
Only humans make mistakes. Everyone doesn't want to make a mistake and suddenly make a mistake. People who learn from mistakes and make themselves more experienced make fewer mistakes. A man cannot become experienced in anything from the initial state, in some or the other he must make mistakes and we have to learn from those mistakes and vow not to make mistakes in the future. Even if we are wrong in many cases we can gain new experience from there to correct ourselves.

If someone's mistake is seen and something is learned from that mistake then that kind of mistake will not be repeated in the future. Assuming that a user used the wrong address to send bitcoins, the mistake will not be repeated. People will always learn something positive from these mistakes and will not repeat this learning in themselves for a long time. And if someone accidentally deletes his bitcoin wallet without saving the security system of the wallet, he can't recover his bitcoins, but people will learn something positive from such a mistake that won't happen again.

Learning from others' mistakes is very good. But learning how to eliminate mistakes is also very good. Everyone must be thinking, I must not make mistakes like that person. But sometimes the mistake is beyond our prediction. So mistakes can still happen to us, even though we have worked hard to minimize mistakes. But I believe the more people know or learn, the more they will be careful and always plan systematically. But when there are people who have experienced their own mistakes, then they will remember a lot more and try not to repeat.

Its good for the fact that we can minimize the possible risk that we encounter especially for losing a lot of money since we already learn a valuable lesson from other people and avoid those mistakes that they have done. Its truly great that we have forum to discuss all things especially the experience of other people thru anything they are trying to go from either on investment or any related to financial situations.

Although there are other people doesn't learn from other experience and ignore but if they experience the same worse situation then lose a lot of money for sure they would talk about how fool they are for not listening some people advice and if they just manage to listen on anything related to that risk for sure they can avoid losing those money that they can afford to lose in their pockets.

Blaming the wallet for a personal mistake makes me realize how much this person is aware of what is happening around him in the real world.
in my opinion, that was a valid criticism or blame (whatever you called that) towards the Wallet which was Exodus for him. but that is the same in every wallet, I don't know if it is possible or not, but if the noncustodial and web3 wallets could really give us a warning about the transactions we are signing, that could save a lot of people from getting scammed like this.
And that is not just a newbie problem. I've seen/heard of pro-crypto people getting scammed because scammers are becoming very smart day by day and sometimes they hack official platforms' social media platforms or email addresses so sometimes it is really not easy to tell if that is a scam or not.

The best thing we can do is to use a separate wallet for Airdrop activities and always transfer anything you earn to a safe wallet.

Advising people to only keep a large amount of funds in a cold storage is a waste of time, you will see someone who will claim that they store thousand of dollars worth of asset in a mobile wallet and nothing bad happen for many years.

Some even claimed that the difference between a hardware wallet and a mobile wallet isn't much as you only need to keep your recovery seed safe, let everyone do what they like with their properties and assets, I have learn to stop telling people what to do, what could actually go wrong if they don't listen?

People only learn after they make mistakes, let's allow mistake to be the teacher for everyone, it seems like this is what they need.

I think this should be about the fastest way to learn. Most learning processes are actually documented mistakes and experiences of others. Scientific evolution also follow similar pattern, that is why there is always improvements and optimizations of scientific systems and processes. Mistake is surely how knowledge is transferred and being wise require we are able to draw the lesson in the mistake of others.

It makes no sense and a stupid decision be made if we invest a huge amount in something like Bitcoin which we don't have knowledge about this.
Because I couldn't imagine someone can afford to lose their money. So, therefore, we don't just know how to buy but also, we must know how to secure our funds as well.

We don't need to wait for other people to speak and tell us that we are wrong or make those people an example but rather be prepared and aware of scam issues. We can avoid this situation if we think more times before deciding to trust people. Scams are everywhere, and it is possible we become their target but they will fail if we are too keen to check the legitimacy of the site and project.

People have to learn something new through mistakes, especially if someone makes a mistake in the Bitcoin forum, then learn something new by learning from the criticism of that mistake. If for some reason the private matters of the wallet are forgotten or hacked, it is necessary to learn the remedies or prevention measures. Also learn how to never get a wallet hacked and make yourself aware of the possible reasons for getting hacked. Always be aware of updated news and properly informed about how to save wallet. Avoid downloading anything or connecting wallets from bogus links.

For me someone's mistake is Their own mistakes and the can learn it but if They are going to share that mistakes in forum like this then as a reader it is serve as a guidance that I will not do it like that cause if I do then one thing for sure I will regret it . But if I have a mistake on my own then  I will learn a lot and that is my perspective. Anyways we have different thoughts in life so some of us they learned many things in life through others which is good cause we all know that if could someone teach us then we will have knowledge on that thing.

There's a popular saying that experience is the best teacher but honestly, the best teacher is learning from other person's mistakes.
Though learning is very important but I would have to disagree that learning is the best teacher. In my opinion experience teaches more than learning on your own because learning from experience leaves a scar that will always be remembered and when such situations want to occur again it will be easier to prevent it because you have experienced it before but the same cannot be said when you learn from other people’s mistakes, you may also do same mistake probably as a result of forgetfulness because it didn’t happen to you yourself. Having both is the best way to teach ourselves.

This is a sad experience of a crypto investor who lost a whooping 8.6 ETH to a scammer, when he clicked a phishing link and granted it authorization to access his wallet because he wanted to participate in an airdrop.
I am surprised as to how a person who holds such an amount of crypto will still want to participate in airdrops and not be aware of the dangers of clicking phishing links. Airdrops are mostly scam nowadays and the percentage of seeing a legit airdrop is almost zero and every crypto enthusiasts should be aware this. To participate in airdrops we are not even expected to participate using the wallet we store our assets, we should have a separate wallet for airdrops to prevent scam attacks.

When someone learned from a mistake and he/she shared his/her mistake like in the forum for example then those who will read it then they will learn something that they should avoided but it's not always like that where you learned from someone's mistake because you may/might make a mistake yourself and learned from it or maybe not at all. There's a reason why we must make ourselves secured like increasing your wallet's security, high/good privacy by avoiding exchanges that requires KYC, etc.

There's a popular saying that experience is the best teacher but honestly, the best teacher is learning from other person's mistakes. So to the newbies, I know you've been warned umpteen times not to click on phishing links and not to give unknown website permission to your wallet, but it's not a bad idea to bring it up again. My goal is that it sinks into your head and saves someone.

This is a sad experience of a crypto investor who lost a whooping 8.6 ETH to a scammer, when he clicked a phishing link and granted it authorization to access his wallet because he wanted to participate in an airdrop.

LESSONS LEARNT:
  • Don't give authorization to unknown websites to access your wallet.
  • if you've large amount of funds, keep in a cold storage.
  • If you're the type that's interested in airdrops, have a separate or dedicated wallet for it, do not use the wallet where you've most of your funds.
You are right learning from other mistakes is best for beginners to excel in every field of life. I read your story and It's a very sad experience Lossing this big amount is not a cup of tea. May god bless you with more power and you have to recover your loss every new user has had a good experience from this incident and saving the main wallet from the phishing link is good advice for newbies.

Maybe you don't follow the development of airdrops now because in reality many people have made thousands of dollars from aridrops now, for example, DYM, JUP, Mavia, Zeta and many more are certainly now more airdrop hunters because they have made thousands of dollars.

Yes it's their own fault for accessing phishing sites or maybe they didn't research properly, I also believe there are still many fraudsters on social media who spread phishing sites, the only way is you have to be able to protect it.

There is no denying the fact that airdrop token has been a thing since the start of the year, it is more less like that whenever a bull run is around the corner. What I think the post you quoted was actually talking about is the fact that this airdrops do not pay like the ones in the past. If you engage in 10 you will it is not likely to earn from 3 of them. And this days airdrops mostly requires you to engage with DApps and that exposes wallet except for experienced investors that will use burner wallets for it. Also most of these wallets them selves aren’t even free you need somewhat like gas fee

All the retrospective airdrops you mentioned provided enough time to claim it. And everyone could read enough reviews to make a decision for themselves to interact with the site for claim airdrop. In the case described by the OP, we see that the victim did not conduct his own research and hurried to give approval on an unknown site for his wallet. So in this case, the main reason why the money was lost is greed.

Only one rule can save a lot of users: don't be greedy. Due to greed, a lot of users lost their funds. Hackers usually can't hack unless you help them directly or indirectly. I know we have been making these types of mistakes unconsciously. But greed is responsible for these types of stories. You are authorising random sites to access your wallet just for a few pennies. Almost 99% of airdrops are just scams. Nothing is except a waste of your valuable time, and sometimes you are losing funds this way. So you must control your greed first. And your task wallet should always be separate from your main portfolio wallet. If your wallet is empty, you can connect anywhere. Just make sure you create a new wallet for each task; it doesn't cost you anything.

Sorry for the lost, whoever that has not been scammed will not understand the pain in it. Your thread is really helpful in terms of security. Atleast no viewer of this thread can fall victim in this same manner. When entering and learning about crypto I think the first thing to learn is the security first before any other thing because if you learn trading before security your assets could be stolen and your hard earned fund will be lost.

The era of making money from airdrops dead for years but still people believe that we are oing to make money from an airdrop that we just found random from people or advertisement. Roll Eyes

You weren't able to make a single buck lately through airdrop does not mean these things do not work anymore. But, you have to find legit ones. Recently I got some FAR tokens from their airdrop by completing some tasks. Some YouTube channels out there provide links to quality projects which has a better chance to airdrop to their users. BRC-20 Tokens started another era of crypto airdrops. There are some cross-chain dexes and defi projects that launch every day. Just you have to spend your time and money to make more money. Unfortunately, I do not have that patience.
