Is this information that the Nano S will no longer be supported by Ledger confirmed or based on your assumptions?
The production will stop. That's been confirmed by Ledger.
@m2017
And here's where and when they exactly announced it:

  • Go over their previous "livestream sessions" > Click the one that aired on "03/08/2022 [Ian Rogers & Saman Nargund]" > Skip to 5:54.

People don't seem to mind going through the hassle to set up and use an airgapped system properly, but they lose their mind if they have to uninstall one app in order to install a different one. Roll Eyes
You have a point, but perhaps they're just worried that some of the apps become large enough to no longer fit in the available space [I do know it'd take a very long time, but still...].

They could easily install at leat 10 MB or something to have whole economy under one roof.
You're right, but why would they do that when they can maximize their profits by selling outdated hardware parts to customers?

Additionally you can go for custom derivation path, I believe that's based on the network?
As I already said in my previous post, the second number refers to the coin type.
For example, the path m/44'/0'/0' is used for generating legacy bitcoin addresses. The path m/84'/0'/0' is used for generating native segwit bitcoin addresses.
The path m/44'/60'/0' is used for generating ethereum addresses. The path m/44'/195'/0' is used for generating Tron addresses.

Also, with changing the third number, you can create new accounts with new addresses.
Some wallets like electrum uses the fourth number to distinguish between receiving and change addresses.
For example, electrum generates receiving addresses on the path m/44'/0'/0'/0 and change addresses on the path m/44'/0'/0'/1

Since we are on Ledger topic, the software that is Ledger Live uses standard derivation path that is m/44'/60'/0'

Are you sure this is correct? Shouldn't it be m/44'/00'/0'?

The correct address as stated by @hosseinimr93
Or for refrence when I connect my Ledger with the MEW, then they will show following options to choose from.
Additionally you can go for custom derivation path, I believe that's based on the network?

Does anyone sees Nano S storage space as big concern while using the new Ledger Live?
I don't see what the fuss is all about. The internal storage space is limited, there is no way around that. People don't seem to mind going through the hassle to set up and use an airgapped system properly, but they lose their mind if they have to uninstall one app in order to install a different one. Roll Eyes

What I meant is we have our smartphone with GB of space on small cheap. They could easily install at leat 10 MB or something to have whole economy under one roof.

Oh, I see. I am not that interested in Ethereum, so I have never even checked what derivation paths are standard for that coin. But such a thing can be easily found out if needed. Anyways, since we are in the Bitcoin sub, maybe it's better to actually focus on Bitcoin when talking about derivation paths as well.

Seems that so98nn is referring to the derivation path used for ethereum.

so98nn, the second number in the derivation path refers to the coin. 0 refers to bitcoin and 60 refers to Ethereum.
You should use the path m/44'/60'/x when dealing with ethereum and m/44'/0'/x when dealing with bitcoin. I think it's better to be a little more specific here.

When I lost my Ledger, I was still a lot relieved because I knew I have the 24 words stored safely. That's the benefit of it. You can store physical card, plus have its photo clicked and stored on device, drive etc where only you have the access to.
No. No plus. Don't do that ever. There is no reason to store the seed digitally in any shape or form. If you have multiple physical copies of your mnemonic, there isn't even a reason to do something like that.

Hardware wallet is very easy to set. First of all if you will have to download and install "Ledger Live" from the official site.
Before installing, you can do another thing. You can verify the signatures and the installation binary. I wrote a thread about that a while back > How To Verify the Downloaded Version of Ledger Live.

This window will pop up as soon as you connect your Ledger Hardware with the USP and desktop/laptop.
There is a small typo here. It should say USB, not USP.

The production will stop. That's been confirmed by Ledger. dkbit98 believes they will stop supporting it also. It could happen after some time because they have already done that with some of their older HWs.

Why not? Are there many critical bugs and vulnerabilities in old firmware? Not one year it all worked and suddenly stop? It seems to me that there is an exaggeration of the threat here.

This company has sold more than one million of its HW devices worldwide. Even if in a year they stop supporting their devices, then a flurry of discontent will rise in all social networks (like reddit). What company would deliberately go for it? So I don't think there is one. Therefore, I can assume that the end of support for Nano S will be extended over a longer period of time than 1 year. In general, I agree with the opinion that the days of Nano S are numbered and sooner or later Ledger will finally get rid of it, but not as soon as predicted here.

For new buyers (those who want exactly Ledger device), the dilemma is not easy: either buy an old model (S), the future of which is uncertain, or buy a new model (S+), which has many defects and flaws due to unoptimized production.

Correct. So Ledger Nano S will be operational no matter what. I get that there could be only problem with the Firmware updates and followed vulnerabilities if any. At least I dont have to buy new one just because this one have stopped production. <3 <3

Does anyone sees Nano S storage space as big concern while using the new Ledger Live? If you see OP, then its just 138 KB and as per new ledger live you have to install required app on it to use it.

Or does it work differently in another space, like temporary offloading another app while you use the alt one? Ping me if you have not understood this question. Though it may be easy one I am still learning the technicalities.

In case of ledger that is impossible, once they stop supporting this devices (later this year) it will be almost unusable like all older defunct ledger models Nano, Hw1, Unplugged and Blue.
Is this information that the Nano S will no longer be supported by Ledger confirmed or based on your assumptions?

..., as fellow readers will now understand that this model is on the verge of being obsolete later this year.
The same applies to this.

..., but this will be not much useful for anyone soon if we know that ledger stopped manufacturing nono s devices,
Most likely, Ledger really stopped producing Nano S and switched to manufacturing S+, as an updated model. But the old model can still be bought on their website. Of course, it's a completely different topic to discuss whether or not to buy an outdated version.

...and they even removed them from comparison page on their website.
Well, I'm not sure what exactly this means that the device will become unusable very soon.

Question - If they do this, will it still be possible to connect the Nano S and use?
You can still use the device but if its firmware can not be updated, it is not recommended to use such device. So highly not recommended.

Hopefully will buy the newer one as soon as they announce the decomiisoning of this model.
If you want to get new hardware wallet, it will be good to go for one of the open source. Ledger Nano secure element is close source, had an history of customers data hack and also recently known to people how Ledger Live do not support customers privacy value, it is not worth a hardware wallet to go for.

Ledger Live Liars Data Collection

@Charles-Time and @dkbit98

Thank you for your input guys.

Well, its good that I opened up this thread then, as fellow readers will now understand that this model is on the verge of being obsolete later this year.
Even this makes me think on upgrading the same so that I wont be left behind with this oldie.

Actually I had bad experience of loosing my ledger so almost lost one ether in the process but fortunately I got it back and now I can invest in new models too.
Hopefully will buy the newer one as soon as they announce the decomiisoning of this model.

This is fine and detailed review, but this will be not much useful for anyone soon if we know that ledger stopped manufacturing nono s devices, and they even removed them from comparison page on their website.
I would understand if someone would review devices like old thinkpad laptops, because you can install any operating system, upgrade components and use it just fine for anything including bitcoin nodes and wallets.

Remember the 24 word card that they provided to you and you wrote all the keys? Well that will be you saviour in this case.
All you have to do is go to following tool and insert your keys and define a standard path for the same. The tool will generate addresses with private keys so that you can access your coins.
About bitcoin, what is mostly matters is to know how to make an airgapped wallet. Not necessarily need to use Incoleman tool to generate keys and addresses when you have your seed phrase (+passphrase if included), but even if you have to do that, best to download its html file on an airgapped device and use the htlm file for it.

But, why not just import the the seed phrase into Electrum directly which can make it easier. Generate Electrum cold storage and move the bitcoin to address(es) generated by the Electrum cold storage wallet before you buy another hardware wallet. But the cold storage wallet is secure and safe as well as it generates keys offline.

Electrum cold storage

For altcoins, it'd be good if you buy another hardware wallet and move your coins to the addresses generated by the new hardware wallet.

Your idea of Incoleman can be used to generate keys for altcoins (or bitcoin too if want to use paper wallet for it or import the WIF private key on wallets like Electrum) and use for spending after importing the private key on wallet that support such altcoin. But most altcoin wallets are close source and most make it difficult to generate cold storage altcoin wallet, the best options that may still remain is to buy another hardware wallet.

Hey Guys, just writing up some reviews about Ledger Nano S which I had bought back in 2017. After extreme reviews with fellow members back in time I decided to purchase it since managing software wallets was full of surprises (hacks, phishing, easy to spend etc.).

Even though I am still using Mycelium Wallet, but had experience all of certain when the wallet was not opening due to some system update requirements.

************************************************************************************************************************
You will love my experience because I already had lost my Nano Ledger S during shifting of our house. I literally got it back two years of time span.
************************************************************************************************************************

This is my Ledger Nano S which I lost. Thankfully owner returned it as he had no idea what the heck is that. Even if he had, he would have never been able to access it due to its password protection.

______________________________________________

Bought on Amazon. Graciously Ledger Nano S and other models are easily available in India. I bought mine on the Amazon [dot] in. There are plenty of retailers who are locals and importer of electronics who has it available in-store also. However, this won't be available in the big chains like Croma, Reliance Digital, Vijay Sales etc. for obvious crypto reasons.

What you get when you receive your box?

The box contains properly fit Ledger Hardware Wallet, a chord, a manual, the keychain strap and most importantly you get a pre-printed card with 24 fields to write on. That's right, you might have guessed for what it is! Its for writing down your 24 words so that you can have this physical copy stored somewhere safe.

Mistakes: Usually everyone wants to be handy so they start clicking picture of every word or either they would screenshot it on the device. This is not at all advisable because even if the single picture is lost then you are done and wont be able to recover the wallet if you lost it.

Rightful Thing: When I lost my Ledger, I was still a lot relieved because I knew I have the 24 words stored safely. That's the benefit of it. You can store physical card, plus have its photo clicked and stored on device, drive etc where only you have the access to.

The Setup - They have made it user friendly

Hardware wallet is very easy to set. First of all if you will have to download and install "Ledger Live" from the official site. When I first stated with it, there was old version with separate wallets to be installed and use. For example, when I did the set up there was Ledger Bitcoin Wallet and separate Ledger Wallet manager.

With the latest update you get everything under one roof. Whether it is your bitcoin wallet, etherum wallet or any other supported altcoin you want to store on your hardware, that can be easily done.

1. Connecting Your Ledger Nano S ( Easy ⭐  ⭐  ⭐  ⭐  ⭐   )

_____________________________________________________________________
Once you successfully unpack the package and install then you will be asked to connect your Ledger with the USB provided.
You will start first connection process which will include:
 a. Getting started tutorial
 b. PIN code generation (This one is for your hardware wallet. You will be asked every-time you open it, change setting, install apps, verify identifier etc.
 c. Recovery Phrase Generation (Every single word will be displayed on the hardware wallet screen. You better write down this on the the provided card with box.
 d. Hide Recovery Phrase (This one for the Live view)
 e. Connecting (A USB will be provided, after above process the wallet will start synching for the latest firmware update, app installs etc.

The very first thing your Ledger Live do is "Genuine Product Check". This is to conform that you have right hardware with you and not the fake one.

As soon as you hit the Check my device button on the right hand down corner it will start processing and it really just take less than a minute really. After this you are good to go further.
Upon successful product check it will show window like the following. From here onwards you can start connection and proceed for the unlocking.

2. Opening your Ledger. ( Easy ⭐  ⭐  ⭐  ⭐  ⭐   )

_____________________________________________________________________
The most exciting part unless and until you have already set it up for the first time. If this is first time opening then you will have work on firmware upgrades, apps install and adding the accounts.

Refer to the right hand side image. This window will pop up as soon as you connect your Ledger Hardware with the USP and desktop/laptop. There are two small button on the ledger. These buttons will work individually or altogether as per various operations. For example, up and down, enter, delete etc. Usually your Ledger Live blinks the action on screen so its really easy to understand how to use it for the first time. Once you are used to it, you just go zoom!

This is where you will have insert your PIN CODE that you generated at the time of first connection.

For any troubles, you will have on screen support, usually boot loader pops up while fixing. If issue is unresolved then you check FAQ on site or get in touch with support team.

3. Ledger Live Dashboard Window  (Average: ⭐  ⭐  ⭐  ⭐     )

____________________________________________________________________________________________

As soon as you insert correct pin code and access the wallet data over Ledger Live you will be shown images shown in left hand side. Basically this is amazing update. If you would have seen the initial version then it was very simple, with ledger manager entirely different than wallet app. Here you can clearly see all the dozens of options to choose from.

Portfolio: This is where all the accounts history, balances are shown mostly preset with graphical presentation.
From Add Account shortcut you will be able to add new wallets. This means you will have to different wallets for bitcoin, eth, other available and supported altcoin to which they call it as Accounts.

This is the dashboard from where you will be able to update your firmware as well.

4. Installing Firmware Update ( Easy ⭐  ⭐  ⭐  ⭐  ⭐   )

_____________________________________________________________________
For the first time, mostly you will have to go through the firmware update process. If you Ledger is pre-loaded with latest update then you wont be asked for the same. However, installing is as easy job as to follow the next, next button.

Make sure, your Ledger is properly connected with the USB, sometimes with loose connection or sudden disconncetion it could corrupt. However, there is option to resume the Boot-Loader so that you can auto-fix this.

Same option can be used if there is sudden breakdown of firmware upgrade. This is why I have rated them 5 star for this process. They have considered all the possibilities and mistakes that general user can do.

Moreover, it downloader will also ask you whether you have your recovery phrase or not. It will take the tick consent and then only proceed for the downloading.

The whole process looks like this:
_____________________________________________________________________

Once you have given the consent that you have your recovery phrase then it will initially start downloading the identifier and firmware update. There will be manual verification of the Identifier before you can proceed further installation.

The identifier will be displayed on the Ledger Live window and at the same time it will start displaying on your Ledger Nano S screen too.
If your bootloader is not updated then it will also get updated in this step itself and then firmware starts updating.

5. Installing Wallet Apps ( Fair ⭐  ⭐  ⭐       )

Account addition is easy but it is extra work. You wont be just finding all the currencies on your hardware. It still needs to be separated with the wallets inside hardware. You have to select desire currency and click on the apps available.

You might have noticed there are only three stars for this one. The problem is they have given very less space to install the other apps. Though majorly used apps that is Bitcoin and ETH will fit in suitably but to install others you have to priorities the whole thing.

Total Space On Ledger Nano S is 138 KB
Space taken by two apps 110 KB
Leftover: 28 KB

Thats minute space to fit in all the apps.

*********************************************************************************
What to do if your Ledger / Hardware wallet is broken or lost?
*********************************************************************************

Remember the 24 word card that they provided to you and you wrote all the keys? Well that will be you saviour in this case.
All you have to do is go to following tool and insert your keys and define a standard path for the same. The tool will generate addresses with private keys so that you can access your coins.

The Tools Name is: MEMONIC CODE CONVERTER

Basically it works on different deviation path and your memonic codes. The derivation path could be BIP32, BIP39, BIP44, BIP84, and BIP141.

Since we are on Ledger topic, the software that is Ledger Live uses standard derivation path that is m/44'/60'/0'
Sometime you may not find your address on this path so you can try out these paths too:
m/44'/60'/1'
m/44'/60'/2'
m/44'/60'

Remember to run this privately since it will generate the address along with the private keys. Usually you can see your address on the first page itself, if not then you can simply keep retrieving more addresses until you find yours.

You can choose the derived path as per what you looking for (bitcoin or ether).

For now that is all. Will keep adding problems and solutions if any just for education purpose.
