Please send me one for review  via PM
I'm fairly certain the demo units shipped to the chosen members already. As for placing orders... CNY may make things quiet, but I think this chip and these products will be popular and available for a while after that.

Except it doesn't work out that way because of the difference in difficulty levels...
Good point.  And we have to factor in current network hash rates and stuff.  It doesn't seem like a complex calculation to figure out, but it's a unique situation created by this new product line.

The part that interests me about these hybrid chips is what it'll do the BTC/LTC exchange rates.  Right now, https://btc-e.com/exchange/ltc_btc shows an exchange rate of 0.02718.  This hardware hashes at 33333:1 BTC:LTC, which sounds like an implied exchange rate of 0.00003.  It feels like there's something here that might be used to turn a profit, but it's eluding me at the moment.  Ideas?

I think the 1,000 pcs refers to the production capacity of the factory.  Wink

I am really beging to qustion Mr. Jack Liao.  He supposedly has no stock yet he can supply 1000 pieces per month.  It has been stated by the manufacturer Gridchip that their only authorized retailer is diginforce as previously posted in this thread.

Mr. Liao would you care to enlighten us on how you are able to obtain  so many pieces when only a few hundred units were released for beta testing?

The way I understand it, the GC3355 is 2 independent hashing interfaces in a single package, with just a little bit of overlap.  Scrypt actually has an SHA256 component at the beginning and end, so there is room for efficient workload sharing, much the same way you can merged mine Bitcoin and Namecoin.  The chips were made available at an event in either late November or early December, along with a reference design.  Manufacturers are free to use and modify the reference design.

It sounds like LightningASIC is one of the initial developers, and these are their early demo units.  When I design a product, I usually do a small pre-production run...  100-500 units...  to test the manufacturing procedures and work out any issues with the process.  The larger number of units also allows for reasonable statistics collection, to find glitches and trends you wouldn't find on the small number of prototype units.  I usually pass off these pre-production units to sales for use in demos, trade shows, and to gather one last round of feedback in customer trials.

If I had to guess, these are pre-production units that passed the QC process, and LightningASIC is using them to gather feedback and generate interest in their product.

Nice photos.  Looks a lot like the reference design, but with a twist.
