I'm mostly a fedora project guy (red hat, centos) but just about anything will give you the basics. Just don't bring up systemd casually Smiley.

This guy has got a lot of helpful shorts with basic how to that are nice.

I second that! I'm a fully converted Linux guy now  Grin (Ok I admit once in a while I still log into Windows to play games) Seriously though, I'm using the Xfce 64bit edition and it's totally awesome.
I would never have dared run 64bit win 7 with only 4gb of ram on my machine. Mint uses a lot less resources and 4gb is more than enough, everything super responsive  Cool

I have tried several distros, but I think you will like Ubuntu best. It is super easy to use, no harder than Mac or Winnxx.

http://www.ubuntu.com/download

Surely the official ubuntu site? That's where I got mine. Much prefer it over Windows. Though if you're trying to leanr linux maybe something other than ubuntu or get a raspberry pi.

tried to download that more than 6 times since this morning. gets error and stops at 250mb

Have you enough disk space left?
Try using the torrent instead.

500gb
split into 300gb windows
50gb ubuntu (empty)
50gb linux (empty)
100gb backup (empty for now)

OK, just making sure.
Just use the official Ubuntu torrent to download. You can start and stop the download if you want then. There will be plenty of seeds.

alright, thank you very much for your help

Oh, and make sure you download the correct Ubuntu version for your CPU architecture, 32 or 64 bit.
If your not sure, use 32bit.

i have a 64 bit. yes the torrent is ok but my connexion is not so great. 65kb/s well at least it wont stop halfway and cancel. thanks mate. can i get back to you if i am having problems?
