I'm mostly a fedora project guy (red hat, centos) but just about anything will give you the basics. Just don't bring up systemd casually

I second that! I'm a fully converted Linux guy now
(Ok I admit once in a while I still log into Windows to play games) Seriously though, I'm using the Xfce 64bit edition and it's totally awesome.I would never have dared run 64bit win 7 with only 4gb of ram on my machine. Mint uses a lot less resources and 4gb is more than enough, everything super responsive

Just use the official Ubuntu torrent to download. You can start and stop the download if you want then. There will be plenty of seeds.

Oh, and make sure you download the correct Ubuntu version for your CPU architecture, 32 or 64 bit.
If your not sure, use 32bit.
i have a 64 bit. yes the torrent is ok but my connexion is not so great. 65kb/s well at least it wont stop halfway and cancel. thanks mate. can i get back to you if i am having problems?
