Linux is better for mining no question about it windows use to many resources.

Better is to mine with Linux it is harder to make it running but it is much faster then win.

Dont now about win8, put it on my kid machine to play games and i must say that it is faster then win7. Dont now about mining if any have experience with mining in win8 pls post.

For someone who has only used Linux mining, is there a good feature comparison of the Linux vs. Windows in mining programs available?

Linux should be faster, safer and easier for mining
Magic word : "should be"

but is it?
Because as I know so many miners are using Windows ...

It might be a little bit difficult to set up Linux and well versed but it's better if you are going to mine coins.

I had linux on a USB stick but I never got it running.
Couldn't even figure out how to install the AMD drivers...
It was the first time ever that i used linux but eventually i gave up on it and returned to windows.

I like using linux mostly just because I like Linux better in general. But one thing I do like is that I don't have to boot up into the graphical desktop, which I think will use less resources.
I may be wrong, but I thought that you need to enable the desktop environment in order to mine.

i cant tell you from experience but i think linux is or gives a better hash rate vs windows because linux is so clean and fast vs sindows is more of a virtual operating system.  Not to down grade windows but music sounds better video is clearer websites load much faster on linux than they do on windows so thats why some guys or a lot of miners use linux and from what ive read in the past linux i think igves you more control over some of the mining programs.  Overall linux might be harder to set up i dont know but it is better control and faster for a basic pc user or home pc etc...  hope this helps.

I'm thinking between the Linux and Windows clients for mining some altcoins, so could you please help me with few questions. I have used Linux a bit, but I'm not so familiar with it and it seems to be quite difficult OS when solving any potential problems. So;

- Is there any difference in mining performance between Linux based client and Windows client, on the same hardware?
- How much memory & harddrive do typical Linux or Windows clients need for mining?
- Which OS would you recommend, and why?
