@drgr33n,

Using the new UNetbootin to install 0.2-Final with 2000MB persistence on 4GB flash drive. On my Gaming/Miner with 2x 5830 CrossFired, which has been working fine under the old UNetbootin build, I get his red star error after the Linuxcoin splash screen and halts with CLI:

Code:
Startpar: service(s) returned failure: isc-dhcp-server
Last login: Sun Aug 7 18:13:19 UTC 2011 on tty3
Linux linuxcoin 2.6.39-3-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jul 25 11:22:19 UTC 2011 x86_64

I assume linuxcoin is not able to get an IP address through DHCP. This machine boots into Win7-64 just fine and obtains an IP address.

New feature to linuxcoin !!

https://tails.boum.org/contribute/design/memory_erasure/

And I would suggest extrongly against java and no need for a good browser. LinuxCoin is meant to be secure. There is really no need to use it to visit the web and stuff.

Booting in Transient mode has turned out to be much more popular than I thought. The chromium browser works *much* better than the new one.

It seems some are very interested in browsing the web while not leaving any droppings or becoming infected.

I get the very distinct impression from most that I talk to that they could not care less about bitcoin but love the idea of secure browsing.

Whodathunkit?

I cannot do much more about the boot. I'm not going to compromise security over a fast boot. I've explained the reasons why the boot now takes longer than usual. I've fixed the shutdown problems. On my system it takes around 30 seconds to shutdown.

iceweasel is more secure than chromium. There's nothing stopping you from installing after downloading. The reason why I dropped chromium is because iceweasel compliments tor. There's a nice button at the top right of the browser. If you set it on then you are browsing anonymous. The reason why it's slow to load is because of the pax security features.

Also I'm not going to add java but you can also do this via the package manager. I will also include a standard kernel option very soon. I just wanted to get things user friendly before I start adding features like that. Bitcoin has taken a knock in the security dept. I'm trying to create an environment that is as safe and secure as possible.

i will drop the secure bitcoin client because the bitcoin client included in linuxcoin has the option to encrypt your wallet Wink

My next goal is probably being done already by some of you more linux savvy folks. I'm looking for an executable  script that once Linuxcoin was launched would:

1) configure 4 GPUs (one 5830 and 3x 5850s) with overclocking and 80% fans;

2) launch four interations of AMDOverdriveCtrl (or some other monitoring app) to track GPU temps/performance; and,

3) logon and start four deepbit pool miners.

This is totally over my head, so suggestions are welcome.

I will provide the framework..

copy the /bin/start_mining.sh to ~/myminer.sh
edit this file
 - pre-populate the variables
 - remove the loop
 - and utilize the wonderful functions provided!

so long as your using persistence this will remain on reboot.

you will graduate 'shell script editing 101' as this would be a rewarding and educational experience!

for extra credit create another script and cron job to check and relaunch the ~/myminer.sh if rebooted.

Have you tried smartcoin yet, it can do all of this and its pre-installed on linuxcoin

I strongly suggest that you do *not* have a secure and non secure bitcoin client options. This will invariably lead to supreme confusion with average users.

I have to agree with this one.

Quote
BACKUP
It would be extremely helpful if there was an easy (GUI) way for the user to email the encrypted wallet.dat file (with the same password used for entry to bitcoin). It would be best if this file could be unencrypted in both windows and Linux, but if only Linuxcoin that will suffice.

Someone  Roll Eyes might start working on something like this soon. But it would be ideal if the GUI (or the client) told you when you needed to backup your wallet again. It could be done easier than it sounds. The program just needs to remember the date of the last backup and the client has a rpc command that provides the creation date of the first address in the queue. Comparing the two dates you can tell the user if a new backup is needed or not. The only problem is communiticating with the wallet, because opening the jsonrpc only for this seems a bad deal because of the security problems it could bring.

Both bootup and shutdown work fine here.

And I would suggest extrongly against java and no need for a good browser. LinuxCoin is meant to be secure. There is really no need to use it to visit the web and stuff.

I'll test the new one when you post it, but frankly for a portable wallet 21b is far superior to the latest versions.
lol I'll quote one of your lines on that one "ye knows not of what he speaks" Wink Would you like to explain why ?
Too confusing for the average user with the multiple choices.
In what context ? the whole thing or just the bitcoin client ?

I recognize that 99% of the usability and users of LinuxCoin is for mining and miners.

My primary interest is to have an offline wallet system for the average user. Towards that effort I made the following posts:

***************

BitCoin Client Selection Suggestions.

PASSWORD
Being that you mentioned you were re-doing the Password issues of the secure bitcoin selection I did not bother to test as I had planned but will offer this set of suggestions:

I strongly suggest that you do *not* have a secure and non secure bitcoin client options. This will invariably lead to supreme confusion with average users.

Just have one bitcoin selection which asks for a password (none of that silly mount dev stuff please). The password can be (I would suggest this on fresh startup). Upon successful entry of existing password user should be allowed option to change password or continue directly to bitcoin client.

BACKUP
It would be extremely helpful if there was an easy (GUI) way for the user to email the encrypted wallet.dat file (with the same password used for entry to bitcoin). It would be best if this file could be unencrypted in both windows and Linux, but if only Linuxcoin that will suffice.

BOOTUP
Please get something on screen quicker and leave the splash screen, or at least text saying one moment please. Those long black screens make one feel like nothing is happening.

SHUTDOWN
Seems to take forever and that black screen of death sucks. Do something as soon as I click shutdown and let me know when to take out the usb like the last version did. I seem to wait an eternity and when I do yank the usb it freaks out and vomits text all over the screen

BROWSER
The new browser is ugly and seems incredibly slow. I would prefer a return to chromium. It would be *really* nice if java was installed.

Well I am extremely disapointed. The bitcoin client password tool does not work at all.

It does not matter what I pick, secured or unsecured I get the same wallet

In secured it does not matter what I type in or don't type as a password I see the same wallet

****************************

You have created a tool that is the beginning of a near perfect USB offline wallet system, but IMHO the average (not techie miner) person does not quite have have the ability to understand and use the newer system easily. I spent hours fiddling with passwords and gave up in frustration.

Cryptkeeper for the 21b helps, but the passwording scheme described above would be near perfect (again IMHO) if it were possible to implement.

@drg33n,

Regenerating the GPU config files worked! Thanks again.

Code:
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo su
aticonfig --initial -f --adapter=all
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
/etc/init.d/gdm start

The forth line blew me out of Linuxcoin to a CLI. I thought I was toast, but rebooted and it worked! Now sees both GPU cards.

I'm happy to beta test for you. Let me know what you want done.

Sorry to bump people but I could do with some help testing my patched version of unetbootin. Had some weird reports and trying to get to the bottom of it but don't have the bandwidth to test because I'm running on a 3G dongle with 500MB of data.

http://linuxcoin.co.uk/downloads/unetbootin/

and use the download option with persistence.

Cheers !!
I don't have a USB so...I can't fully test it.
