I heard something that merits deplete. Do they actually? And how often do they like "decay" or "deplete"? Anyone know a set rate?
Your smerits stash just reduce when you send them but they don't decay in my opinion because I have not seen any members raising such concerns even if they are not sending any merits on forum.Although there have been past discussions that there should be some way to utilize those smerits who don't send them but they don't decay as per now.

🖤😏
And to be honest, I think it's unethical to ask for merits. I am doing well, slowly accummulating merits on my own and trying to hide my mischiefs during the process.
Don't worry, you are now under the spell of an enchantress, soon you will be pumped up.🤭

I have come to the conclusion that those non-sources with more than 5k merits all deserve their status. 🤥 Ok maybe %95 of them. However it is becoming really concerning when we see some people are extremely obsessed about other people's received merits, it's kind of a battlefield with live ammunition, cough*symm*cough. man down, I repeat man down.🙃🛌 this was the best emoji close to a man down I could find. Lol

Wait, what?  Did I miss something or are you busting apogio's cubes?  I've been unconscious for the past 20 hours and am still groggy from the coma-like sleep.

Hey buddy, what does that mean? "Busting my cubes"?  Tongue

Oh btw, as I said multiple times, I don't really care who the merit sources are, but I wanted to know the definition.

2. For every 2 merits I receive, I can send 1 merit. Does this change over time?
Not until now.
Wait, what?  Did I miss something or are you busting apogio's cubes?  I've been unconscious for the past 20 hours and am still groggy from the coma-like sleep.  The last time that happened and I missed something big was in 2018 when the merit system was created.  Oh, what a week/month/year that was!  If anyone wants some interesting reading, check out the posts in Meta from Jan. 2018.  The whole section was on fire.

I'm a merit source, for anyone who wants to check me off their list.  I've said that enough times, though, that anyone who's interested in knowing who's a source should have done so already.  And it was smart of Theymos not to make that list public, lest sources get inundated with PM requests for merits or get stalked all over the place (which I still see happening).

Merits really are rare, but I, for example, find it very difficult to earn them, but participating in the forum things flow naturally.

It's a marathon, not a 100 meter sprint. It's a privilege to be here, the standard is high most of the time.

The opportunity to interact without the amount of nonsense you have on regular social media is the great value here.

I heard merit sources are like hidden, not announced by staff and can be found through community investigation or by admittance, so what you are trying to find may be a little difficult or inaccurate.

I've seen a couple of high merit users but I'm unsure if they're part of the merit source club or not. I would post these users here in this thread, but for that reason my observations may not be accurate unfortunately. Or they could already be posted too which is another factor, since I'm really late to this thread.

Also, 5,000 merits is actually respectable and takes alot of determination, contribution and hard work. Very commendable to those users who actually made it that far. Has a non merit source reached over 10k that isn't a former staff or current staff for this forum?

What will you benefit from this list, because there are already similar lists?

Today is obviously the day of stupid questions because they are all over the forum and really don't make any sense. What on earth does it matter whether someone has earned 5000 merits, and whether or not he is merit source - he won't assign merits to himself (nor can he even if he wants to).

I guess OP was just feeling too much excitement as he or she is approaching a mile stone of 1000 merit, and he is probably thinking too much about the merit system and how and when he can actually get to 5000 merit in the future. OP already knows the total number of merit sources in the forum, so it would still have been very easy for him to figure out some members on the forum who have about 5,000 merit but are non-merit sources.

Although, the receiver can't know that the merits he/she receives are from a merit source's monthly allocation or from sMerits that he/she has earned because of his/her contribution.
That's correct. And you don't even know if the person meriting you is a merit source or a regular user, nor does it matter for your personal merit count. 1 merit is 1 merit, regardless from which bag it comes. Whether they are sMerits or source merits, one isn't worth more than the other, and you still need a specific number to progress to the next rank in the line.

The merits your receive from someone remain attached to your profile unless theymos takes them away. The source merits that merit sources receive are valid for 30 days. If they aren't allocated during that time, they get removed/they expire only to be replaced with the same count for the next one-month allocation period.

But another thing that you might still be mistaken about is the profile picture you are wearing. No one will penalise you for it but I don't think it's entirely right.

Don't you know it's for the merit-circling club? The image is actually for the merit sources if I am correct, not those who only have the sMerits and who have the grace of sending it to others. Since you already know the difference between sMerits and Merit sources themselves, I believe you should conclude now if you are still willing to wear the image or not.

Thanks, but everything is under control:

Lol...I hope you have gotten the gist correctly by now?

AFAIK there's no rule, set, overdue about decay on unused sMerit, no one have complained if the amount of their sMerit decreased, so sMerit decay isn't happen yet.

Quote
There is no point in hoarding sMerit; keeping it yourself does not benefit you, and we reserve the right to decay unused sMerit in the future.

In addition what philipma1957 was saying, if you send your sMerit, the total Merit you have wouldn't decreased. So you don't have to worry if you want to send your sMerit.

they deplete when you give them away.

I do not know if anyones have been decayed.

I suspect if they do decay the member may be idle for a long time and they take them.

And here, list of most generous users sending merit

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=topsendat
All users on the list can be confirmed as merit sources - but the full list is here:

Bitcointalk Merit Dashboard - Ranking

Some of the most generous senders in the last 30 days are not merit source - I think so, I mean PrivacyG, icopress, jokers10 are not merit source.

Is there a way I can know non merit sources and their rank in number of merits?
There are 3 tools you can use to get it:
1. BPIP
2. Loyce.club
3. Bitcointalk Merit Dashboard

An sMerit is a sendable merit. Two received merits generate one sMerit that you can send to another account.
Source merits aren't sMerits. It's a unique balance of merits that only merit sources have. So if my monthly allocation of source merits is 200, the merits I give to other users will first be taken from that balance. My sMerits balance remains untouched until I have allocated all my source merits.
Thanks for the information as only merit sources can have such information because they are the ones who get those monthly allocated merits for them. I thought that the merits the merit sources get is same as sMerit that we gain when someone sends us 2 merits but now I know that the merit sources can have two types of merits that they can send. Although, the receiver can't know that the merits he/she receives are from a merit source's monthly allocation or from sMerits that he/she has earned because of his/her contribution. But, I'm pretty sure it's a good information for us to know and I'm happy to hear that from you. I truly appreciate it!

The merit sources are those members of the forum who get free sMerits on their accounts. If I'm not wrong then they get monthly a set or a variable amount of sMerits that they can send to the members who make good and contributive posts on this forum. A merit source is basically someone who gets Smerits out of thin-air but other users have to get two merits in order to have 1 sMerit. I hope now you understand that who the merit sources are and why they are present on this forum.
For absolute clarity, it's important to distinguish two types of merits: sMerits and source merits. They are not the same thing.

It's actually quite common that a merit source who receives a lot of merits ends up with hundreds or thousands of sMerits because he isn't in the best position to spend those due to his source merit allocation.

I think LoyceV mentioned he has over a thousand of sMerits at one time in the past. I am guessing it's several thousands now. @LoyceV have you reached 5000 unallocated sMerits yet? Tongue

They are trusted and approved members ofbthe forum that are saddled with the responsibility of distributing merits to every quality post they received, these are sendable merits, here is their list

Thank you!

It's in Russian, but you shouldn't have difficulties to understand the data in the tables.

1. Who is a merit source? Could someone send me a relevant thread where I can get this info?
A thread like this one created and maintained by Coin-1 will help you figure out who the merit sources are: TOP 200 merit senders.
It's in Russian, but you shouldn't have difficulties to understand the data in the tables. It's a top list of users who distribute the most merits each month. Since merit sources have the most merits, it's only logical to conclude they will be at top of such a list.

You can also make a quick manual check. If you suspect someone to be a merit source, just check their profile on BPIP. If there is a significant different in the number of merits they send compared to what they receive, it's also a sign that they might be a merit source.
