I personally don't think altcoins are necessarily useless. None of them are interesting enough to be used as a currency for now, but some features are definitely innovative. So far, I've played with a few altcoins, but never held more than 1 BTC of them in a wallet (by that I mean that when I had litecoins, they were actually LTC-GLOBAL shares).

Folks will buy Litecoin at $20+ each even those here that wouldn't even buy if it went to $1, I remember buying Bitcoins at £10.00 each only to see it drop to around the £2 mark. I firmly believe litecoin is going to prove to be an amazing roller coaster ride whether you want to buy a ticket to that ride or not is entirely up to each individual, if you do though one bit of advice would be to - HOLD ON TIGHT !! There are many scenarios in which an altcoin could become more valuable than Bitcoin, however none are very likely in the short term.

In longer time scales, the 6 month to 2 year head start Bitcoin has over the alts will not necessarily amount to much. Once a merchant starts accepting Bitcoin, there is very little barrier to accepting other alts as well. It'll be interesting to see how this whole crypto thing plays out over the next 5-20 years.
