Just to update you guys.

We have been using Mykolab now for about 2 months. The first month was a bit rocky due to some upgrades they were doing, but it's been VERY solid for the last month. They took our Bitcoin without issue.

There is a new email service that accepts bitcoins: https://www.xcapsa.com.

They also offer owncloud (file storage/sync similar to dropbox; contacts, calendar) as part of the same service.

All customer data stored in encrypted filesystems in your own private server.

(I am one of the developers of the xcapsa service - contact [email protected] if you need more info).

Thanks Andrew, I must have missed that.  I will contact them.

A timely anecdote regarding email security:

Recently, I've been helping my parents manage their retirement savings.  Today we had a conference call with an advisor from the brokerage-arm for one of the Big 5 Canadian banks who manage their RRSP.

My parents wanted to email something to them, and the advisor noted that they are steering all clients away from gmail for all communications.  In fact, they no longer send even non-confidential emails to gmail accounts, to prevent people from responding with something confidential over the same channel.  The advisor mentioned that they have had "10 hack attempts over gmail in the last 2 weeks," one of which very nearly succeeding in wiring a large amount of money to "clients in Asia."

I asked about PGP encryption but they said we should just snail mail this info to them.

People are getting the e-mail heebeegeebees indeed!

No problem. I'll let you know as I find new services like this. Someone mentioned a joint project by Silent Circle and Lavabit, but it will take a few months at least for it to be developed, they are still in the fund raising stage. It does look very promising.

Google is a mess and I refuse to use any of their services including search.
It's leaked out for years that they save absolutely everything about every user including emails and search history, and never delete it.
When I saw Google start prompting for a phone number to be linked to my Google account, I said thats it, no more. It's obvious they want to be able to track every single person in a big brother fashion.

If you saw some of the people working at Google, you would get some real hibby jibbies!

Mykolab looked interesting, but I couldn't find a way to pay with bitcoins and I didn't see 2FA offered for webmail login.  Hushmail is in the process of adding 2FA, but the told me they have no plans to begin accepting bitcoins (I mentioned BitPay to them).

Don't use Hushmail, it is not private.

From Mykolab's website:

Do you offer alternative forms of payment?

At the moment we support primarily PayPal transactions, including for credit cards. For yearly payments we also support direct bank transfers. We are working to also provide direct handling of Credit Cards, as well as alternative forms as payment such as BitCoin. Please let us know your preferred way of payment, so we can prioritize the new options accordingly so that the most wanted option will be available first.

Can I use my own domain?

Yes, you have the option to use your own existing domains. If you don't have a domain, you can register one with a provider of your choice and then use it for MyKolab. Please sign up for a Group Manager Account. With that you can even add more accounts to your domain for people to collaborate. More information is available in our support section.

We are planning to allow you the registration of new domains with MyKolab, but we will need some time to implement that.

@all:

Please understand that we are looking for a service that we can run in conjunction with our own domain, where we can manage users. Such email service from Google is certainly not free. We are not looking for @gmail.com accounts or something like this.

Mykolab allows you to do that.

Hi everyone,

We are looking to move our email away from Google. Is anyone using Gossimer or any of the other email providers that support Bitcoin payments? If one of you have experience with them or any other provider, we would really appreciate the feedback here!

Thanks guys!

Haha, I was searching for such a service this weekend too.  I think people are getting the gmail heebeegeebees.

So calling all experts out there!  What is the easiest solution if we want to:

1. Replace gmail, yahoo, etc
2. Pay with bitcoins
3. Have a 2FA option for any webmail service offered.
3. Maintain good email security in general, no snooping (I'm not really sure what that means; I was learning about GPG this weekend, but that doesn't seem reasonable for most users)
4. Use your own domain name if you want
5. Not require setting up a VPS!

I wrote to hushmail.com.  They sounded promising and will soon have 2FA, but they have no plans to accept bitcoins Sad

Thanks in advance!

i think google it
this must help you

What's wrong with gmail? ...

I love my Google Apps account, but...

I'm surprised that it even legal for many businesses to use any of the existing e-mail or cloud storage solutions due to privacy and security considerations, and even when it is, it is probably unwise in a lot of cases.  Everyone now needs to assume that everything they've done on-line can be called forth at any point in the future.  When I've made use of cloud services in the past I've had to roll my own UCE in order to comply with at least my own standards of ethics and it was a pain in the ass.

What's wrong with gmail? Of course, it's free. It stores about 15 GB now. The web interface has labels (as opposed to mere folders.) It has nice spam protection. It rarely goes down. And you can chat.

For sensitive emails, the lesson learned is that you must download and delete all emails, and avoid web based as much as possible. That way, all your emails are not stored on the server long enough, (but who knows how long google keeps your email even if you delete them.)

GPG works too.

There was an article about how SR and their merchants should operate, and that includes downloading POP3 emails and making GPG mandatory.

pidgin and OTR answer the chat part, if you like doing that. I usually don't turn on my gmail chat.

From some story I read recently, Lavabit and SilentCircle are teaming up to try to coordinate an open source platform.

Secondly, it looks like mega.co.nz is working diligently on UCE messaging systems of several sorts.  If e-mail is simply to architecturally flawed to provide a high level of privacy (due to routing and what-not) I may try to switch over to a different method of exchanging messages of a sensitive nature.

I'm looking forward to progress on both of these developments.

If You have business then why not run your own mail server? It is better than anything else privacy-wise.
