Actual furnace fans aren't that loud, or they wouldn't be tolerated in homes.  Why don't you try to find a trashed furnace and salvage the fan out of it to see how it does? It can't be worse than the plastic box fans, and can be ducted way easier.

Furnace fans can probably be found by asking around at some local shops that service/install them. They're almost always replacing furnaces when people upgrade them, but the fan/blower units are probably still good.

Here's a link to a Canadian woodworker that made video of exactly what I was thinking.

Lol i'm going to bookmark this. What's the dB on them at 100%?

These look like the sort of things i could hack a dial on and put 6 to 8 on parallel, could totally work if embedded in a sheet of plywood if they can run on reverse. Could split half on their own dial and switch to intake and or exhaust without messing with the "install".

Then install a metal mesh on the exterior side to wrap low performance air filter to prevent snow and maybe some light rain from coming in and also preventing your neighbor from wondering wtf. Smiley

It would definitively beat the 110$ 20" metal box fan i just bought in term of setup solidity and versatility. Hell i could even hook the dial up to a raspi or arduino and control them remotely or with a script.

I had some very good ten inch fans.

I sold them to valkir or herbpean

USA to Montreal.

They should give you a link or photo for them.

eBay has them used 25-40 bucks.

You could cut a piece of plywood to hold them.
Make sure you use grills as they could cut your finger off.

It's Valkir ;-) I saw them during the weekend Cheesy

They have a lot of static pressure.

Your big concern with the setup, I think is that you want to have an in and out fan beside each other,
Your best bet will be to pipe in the outside air to the back side of the room.
You could likely run 2 5" dryer liners in over and down the back wall, and get away with a large exhaust fan.

As for the CFM you are after, you will never get a silent version. That's going to be hella noisy lol

Yes let me just explain to my landlord why i want to take down a wall from his apartment so i can have two windows Tongue And i never said silent, two box fan at full speed arent silent at all and the CFM is plenty, they just dont have enough pressure so a bit of wind and BAM they basically stop their spin. A metal equivalent with more angled blade would be quieter, but much more performant!

I'm sorry did I say take down a wall???
If you are going to be rude, read the fucking comment.
I said pipe the fan for intake an exhaust to different parts of the room.
That's a matter of running a line, not using a second window.

I also stated use a furnace fan, but I see you thank someone else for that.
I'm done helping.
Good luck

There is no need for that. And Bye.

What are the dimensions of the room (LxWxH) and dimensions of the windows and quantity?

There's a lot of HVAC calculators out there for air exchange CFM requirements, if you want to do it right this is how you do it.

Having a pile of miners running with the air just blowing willy-nilly in the room is going to create hot and cold spots, you want to read up on fluid dynamics, turbulence, what causes dead zones, and visualize the airflow in the room.

Put the big furnace style blower as an exhaust fan in one window and an array of cheap box fans to keep the air moving from the inlet window, if you can create a wind tunnel effect across the miners you will be better off, but I don't know the layout of the room and what we're working with here.

Draw it up or post pics or both.

Well i think its overcomplicating it, since 2 box fans are doing the job. But have too low pressure to keep the air going when the wind hit them or if i add a filter to catch the snow.

But i'll add some details at the end of this post. Smiley

Thats an interesting idea. The blower type fan i saw were extremely loud, i wonder if i could build an array of them (slower/quieter ones) and pipe the exhaust to a wooden frame that would hold the exhaust in the window.

Way too expensive setup for my usage but maybe for my next place. Hrm. Definitively noted.

Virosa this is a good idea.  I was looking into larger industrial exhaust fans like this: http://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/18-in-single-speed-ventilating-fan/A-p0772343e;jsessionid=YjEYeEHB2F0F3ZtnGxZTpI37.pal-prod-com1 for myself, but it would probably be too loud for your application.

No idea where to find that, its illegal to loot scrapyards here. They're fenced and shit.

The window opening is 16inches by 48~ inches.

The room is small, like 3x3x2.5meters.

Red is hot spots, circles is because there are portable rigs sorta spread out, but not really like in the pic. Yellow arrow is box fan airflow. The red line is a rack, 80% of the heat come from there. And top right is the window, the top box fan push heat out and the bottom one pull cold air in.

I'm pretty sure the metal 20" box fan will be good enough replacement for the intake fan + a filter to prevent snow from snowing on my rigs.

When I suggested a furnace/AC fan this is exactly what I had in mind. Sure there would be some fabrication required to fit the fan(s) to you application, but they can move a lot of air quietly. If the one(s) you find are new enough they might have built-in speed control easily manipulated by an Arduino or other microcontroller. If it's an older model you can find fan speed controls for not too much money.

Given that it's gotten cold in Canada I'll bet that the furnace/heating shops probably have some, or can get you some pretty quickly.

I mined with ~5kw of gear in an apartment before.  After going through a bunch of fans I eventually got this one.  It is a beast; by simply running it on high with a second window open elsewhere ( otherwise you get mixed pressures ) it would lower the temperature in the apartment by 30 degrees in under a minute.  Can run as intake or exhaust without moving the fan.  One of these should do the trick; 2 of them for sure.

https://www.amazon.com/Lasko-2155A-Electrically-Reversible-16-Inch/dp/B00FXOFNYQ/

I saw these before, seemed flimsy and low CFM. I didnt try them because they seem to be built around fitting the shroud in the window opening and mine is 16.5inch~. But i was hoping to find a reversible fan like that, made from metal, that would fit my windows. I wonder if i could remove some excess mounting material so i can fit 2 in the kitchen (much bigger window) come summer. I could maybe turn the place into a farm and go live somewhere else. Hrm.

I went with the 20inch metal boxfan since it has several time more pressure as the plastic ones, it should be able to pull air through a filter (so the snow doesnt get in).

If you are running the fans in the same window, use part of a large cardboard appliance (refrigerator) box to separate the two airflows bot into and out of the room. Direct the cooling airflow towards your GPUs and away from the exhaust fan's intake side. You will also want to make the exhaust fan move more air than the intake air fan. This will create a low pressure inside the room making the outside air "want" to come into the room.

See if you can find some vortex style fans, e.g.:
https://www.lowes.ca/portable-fans/ecohouzng-ct4005g-16-in-high-velocity-air-circulator_g2458336.html

You can also try to find smaller diameter drum fans:
https://www.lowes.ca/portable-fans/utilitech-pro-sfdc2-600t-pro-24-in-2-speed-high-velocity-fan_g1476641.html

For these last two suggestions you will need to fabricate some kind of adapter (cardboard and duct tape work well), but it open up more possibilities.

see if you can find air movers/blowers like this:
https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.1625-cfm-three-speed-air-mover.1000720712.html

Alternatively see if you can find whole house forced hot air/air conditioner system air blowers. They tend to move a lot of air and are quiet.

I used a 24" drum fan in my basement garage this past summer when the room (35' x 55') flooded. It moved a lot of air and dried things out quickly, but the downside, on high speed it made a significant amount of noise. We didn't mind because we could close the door to the basement. Your neighbors probably wouldn't be too happy with you, though.

Yes good idea, A replacement furnace fan etc. will take a bit more to rig up, but move a lot of air and do not make much noise.

Had no idea you had close to 20,000 Watts of gear in a small apartment, free power FTW.

But honestly with that much heat, no idea if any of those fans will work unless its a huge blower fan but those are crazy loud. When temps get down to -30C you shouldn't have an issue then.

No idea how you survived the summer.

Its a big appartment Tongue And i'll get even bigger next year.

And I dont have that much yet but close, 15kW~ atm at full power, but i'm planning ahead. Up to 80 AMPs 250v, but that would mean no Oven like 1 year ago Tongue
Who need a cloth washer/dryer when you can have a farm, right?

Summer was easy, Both 20" on exhaust and living room window open, patio door open etc. So outdoor temp = indoor temp more or less. It worked very well.

But i can't do that during winter, that would mean sub zero in my living room...

@Everyone

You are all (mostly) linking me plastic toys fan, not understanding i need to vent close to 60000BTU so i will re-iterate, since i guess i wasnt clear enough;

I already have two big 20inch fan in parallel in exhaust configuration, i need website sites where i can buy something better or similar heavy duty fans that i might have missed that i can get, at least as good as  the one i linked in OP. I can find them all over ebay, but for some reason, i can't seem to find retail for them.

So i must of missed some.

If its -10C outside you really shouldn't need any fans, the high pressure/low pressure should force the cold air inside your room. Maybe open the door to your room so there is cross ventilation.

So, you think you can cool 20kW without fans?

I use one of these but not  sure if you can get it in Canada but it works great on top of my Script miner with a open case with two stock fans it is a lot quieter to run .

there is a cheaper version when i bought i was gonna use it in a window.
.

That won't do. I already have two 20inch box fan in parallel and its not enough, ergo the need for upgrade to metal window fans.

I installed this in a buddies farm

some one that bought that told me it is very loud other wise no idea .

Yeah i can't use these, its not even good CFM Tongue I thought of using 12 inches one in parallel but its not cost effective. Beside i have a 17*50 window opening, no reason to use something that compact Tongue
