It would be worth it if you can get the gpu cheap. It would take a long time to pay of your GPU. ATM im mining LTC and have nearly payed of my miner ( have free power). I would recommend a 7950 instead of a 7790 Smiley

I mine with my gaming 7970, and I expect it pays off in one year. Not bad, but I dont pay electricity

I bought a pair of used 7950 cards off eBay about 8 months ago, mined the shit out of them for 6 months doing LTC, then sold them for a few quid more than I paid for them.   The LTC converted to BTC, which I just sold for £300.

ffs, why don't you guys stick to precisely what he is asking in the OP??

He is not asking for power savings, neither is he wanting to generate heat, neither is he asking for ASICs.
He is asking 2 things: 1) which card should I use?; 2) is there profit to be made?

Answer: yes it is worth it.
- Check out this list: https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison and see how much Kh/s you get out of your intended cards
- Check this site: http://www.coinwarz.com/cryptocurrency and enter your Kh/s and perhaps the cost of electricity. See in $'s/day and how many days to get 1 BTC
- Mine one of those coin that tends to be profitable and stable (e.g. Worldcoin, Feathercoin, Megacoin), or register at https://hashco.ws

A personal advice: I regret purchasing a 7870 and should have got a 7950. That's just 400 Kh/s instead of 650+, for a ~50€ difference, let alone the resale value. Get a 7950 or wait for a 280, if you can.

USB miners are cheap now-a-days. You can get them for $10 pretty easy for 333 MH/s.

I only pay 1/8 of the electricity bill in my flat. If I mined LTC with say a HD 7790 would I make any money?

No.  You get more juice out of a USB miner stick.

Hey if heat is you want, get the 5970 instead. It has great BTU/watt heating output. Though it's noisy in 100% fan speed, in winter you can trim it down because of the temperature.

Also yeah you'll get free electricity in the end and also you get some few extra NOK. for that.

The HD 7950 is past "future proofing" and firmly in the "more than i need" category. Somtimes I see them on sale though. If a Hd 7950 is on sale around the 7th when i get paid I will get that one. Out of Hd 7790, 7850 and 7870 which would you recommend?

I am sorry, I have no experience with these.

Final question for my gaming needs. Out of Hd 7790, Hd 7850 and HD 7870 which is the best for mining. Ideally I would get a HD 7870 but if a HD 7790 is significantly more efficient I would be prepared to settle for that because I only really want the Hd 7870 for future proofing.

The most efficient for scrypt mining is 7950, unfortunately it is not on your list of candidates. Would you change mind?

Haha yeah it sounds like a dick move. It isn't because I don't spend that much time at home and I have to leave the heating on anyway to stop pipes freezing. Everyone else uses the dryer and washing machine and what not shit loads ... i hardly ever use it :S. So it was an idea i had to make the whole splitting the bill between 7 people fairer lol.

just one drawback - it is a bit noisy if you really want to make it a heater Smiley

Well basically. I live in Norway it is fucking cold in winter anyway. If I could have the gpu running constantly to stop the pipes freezing rather than the radiator on that would be awesome. Also there no need to factor in the cost of the gpu because I need to buy a new one for gaming anyway (I am running apu at the moment).

The main point is if I am just paying a tiny amount for the electricity because it is divided by 7ish people and I get a 100% of the LTCs will I be out of pocket?

You might be able to eek out a tiny profit if you ignore the fact that you are forcing everyone you live with to pay the extra expenses.  Kind of a dick move.

Unless you are already heating with electricity even for heat generation, mining is less efficient than other heat sources (gas, wood, etc).

Building a LTC miner as a block heater doesn't sound like a bad idea!

Not worth it unless you are already heating with electricity.  If it's cold, why not run some GPUs?
