Haha that was fast, this is exactly what I was thinking of. I wonder if we'll see a stabilization over time as more source merit comes into the system. Right now it looks as if the initial supply of sMerit is still drying up, more merit was sent in the first week than the entire time month following that week.

Cool stats! Since you've already managed to sort by day of the week, would it be possible to see how merit distribution has changed over time (more or less being sent out now than at the beginning).

I've done it a few times I think. If memory serves me right I actually did it with 10 merits. Easily done

That happens if you hit refresh after sending merit. https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.29197764
I've seen that bug before, but I doubt that happens at the same second. User "bitart" isn't in my list of people who sent Merit twice in one second.

It's obviously possible to do it slower than 1 second which would explain bitart's absence from the data. I was just thinking it would be odd if there was another bug that caused the same thing.

Double-clicking the button perhaps?

Ah the fat finger bug, I hadn't thought of that. It could be, now I need to find a post worth two merit to see if I can replicate it.

Anyway thanks for doing this, the site stats cutting the lists off at 50 is very limiting. I'm also looking forward to the ranking stats. That'll not only find the cheats but also show that people can still rank up if they deserve it.

Occasions where the same user merited the same post twice at the exact same time
26 posts received the same number of Merit from the same user in the same second. I assume those "double Merits" were accidental:

I've never done it but I did receive 1 + 1 for the same post from someone I assume had found that bug/feature.

Thanks for creating this, it's interesting reading, although I haven't looked in depth.

I haven't heard of most of the top awarders - are they active on the  alt coin and bounty boards.

Would it be possible to provide information on awards on specific boards, such as the Beginners and the Frog Pond. Wasn't the merit system designed to encourage quality posting on the information and help boards about Bitcoin.

Would it be possible to have a crawler take all of this information and cross-reference merits to each day of the week?
That's actually very easy to do from theymos' data:

Monday 9430 (10.63%)
Tuesday 10060 (11.34%)
Wednesday 10942 (12.33%)
Thursday 22816 (25.72%)
Friday 14446 (16.28%)
Saturday 11063 (12.47%)
Sunday 9946 (11.21%)
Total: 88703

Thursday seems to be a good day, but the Merit system was introduced on a Thursday. The large amount sent on Thursdays could very well be from the first day (I didn't check this further).

This will take a bit longer.

Total number of merits given out across each board.
Ideally, https://bitcointalk.org/ should just show that on the main page. But I'll add it to my list.

Very nice! These statistics are going to be interesting. Seeing your to-do list has filled my head with a few more ideas.

  • Would it be possible to have a crawler take all of this information and cross-reference merits to each day of the week?
  • Total number of merits given out by each rank. Let's see who utilizes merits the most.
  • Total number of merits given out across each board. This will help us see where most posts are getting recognized and show what boards receive the least love (or the most shitposts).

So, only 9725 users sent at least 1 their sMerit. I think ir's too small number and it shows that there are still so many users who aren't aware about Merit system. Bitcointalk has much more active users, if I'm not mistaken ~100k (you need to sign in to your account at least once per month to be considered as active user). Sometimes I'm checking spammy boards like Altcoin discussion, Bounties, Politics & Society and etc, then I open random profiles of Full Members and above, and guess what - mostly of these users haven't sent any single sMerit. Some users complaining that "Merit system aren't generating enough sMerit", "good posts aren't Merited" and etc. But how you can complain when people aren't using their sMerit first of all?
It will be interesting to see more data analysis posted.

This thread is work in progress.
Note: I don't want to delete data. Weekly updates are added as new posts at the end of this thread, not to the OP.

Permanent links (updated weekly):
theymos' raw data (format: time    amount    msg    user_from    user_to)
Full list (full data since January 24, 2018; not limited to 120 days).

theymos' data (human readable format, including usernames and post titles)
Full list (big file!)

Usernames to go with theymos' data:
Full list

Theymos made raw Merit data available:
Here you go: https://bitcointalk.org/merit.txt.xz

Similar to trust.txt.xz, it'll be updated weekly. It will show only the last 120 days of data; someone else should archive the old ones if you want them.
I've been playing around a bit with the data, and in this topic I'll post anything worth noting. I would like to update this continuously from Recent merits, but that's for another day.

Usernames
See pastebin for usernames to go with theymos' userIDs.

Occasions where the same user merited the same post twice at the exact same time
26 posts received the same number of Merit from the same user in the same second. This is caused by double clicking the Send button:

Two times 1 Merit from aTriz to Craige288 for this post.

But, what I really wanted to create, is a list of users who earned (or bought) enough Merits to reach the next rank. This is also an indication of how well the Merit system performs.

TODO

Users who have already ranked up after earning Merits
Starting Rank (Merit), Current Rank (Merit), Current Activity

Users who have enough Merit to rank up once they get enough Activity
Current Rank, Current Merit, Current Activity

Users who received Merit, but not enough to reach the rank that fits their Activity

Total Merit received per Rank

Number of users per Rank who have received at least 1 Merit
