People usually do use a new address for payments but in the same wallet and then they obviously get spend linked at some point if they're not careful. Most campaign managers won't look into this though but other curious users may bust you.

Not necessarily. There have been cases were users were removed from signature campaigns for signing up with multiple accounts. I'd rather not share the link but there was even one case where a campaign operator found out and did not want to remove them since they (well, actually a single person) were one of the campaign's best promoters but the rules forbade it.

You're right that multiple accounts are most commonly identified by taint analysis and traces of spend-linking. I could never understand how something so simple and easily preventable could trip people up though. It's trivial to use a new address for payments.

Doesn't seem like a good idea. Some people do have a shared IP that is shared among users. If two Bitcointalk users uses it frequently, they may be mistakenly banned. This would happen with dynamic IPs too. Signature campaigns won't bother with the number of accounts you own as long as you post constructively. Multiaccounts can also be detected by traces of spendlinking in the address and posting in a similar style .Most signature campaigners would want their signature to receive the maximum exposure possible.

I dont follow, you are proposing a place for people to voluntarily screw themselves over by giving out the names of their alts? Why would anyone volunteer that information? Even account sellers don't make it public the names of the accounts they are selling, because then people mark them with negative trust.

With our current forum rules which allows selling and buying accounts forcing any "disclosure alt accounts system" is just stupid and won't be effective at all. I just want to say if someone is a scammer he/she will be found sooner or later no matter which account he is using. There is no need for 'advanced forum task force' responsible for hunting alts.

It will be a lot of "extra work" for the staff members, because they should be as the police and "surf" all the forum for catch/individue the possible alt accounts. Indeed it is not against the forum rules to own 2 accounts or  buy & sell them.

What good it is to have a IP check, when the users with multiple accounts would just use proxy or VPN, it would just create feeling of false security that you are safe from multi accounts when you are actually not.
It would make much more sence to ban multiple accounts by adding a rule againt them in general, then it would be just a matter of time when the accouts and adresses used would be linked one to another.

There are definitely legitimate uses for alternative accounts that have nothing to do with account selling or sig campaigns too. Some people might wish to have a personal account and a business account for a service. The business account would focus on something like a gambling site, an exchange, a mixer, etc. Then their personal account might be used for "personal" stuff - including voicing personal opinions about topics that might be deemed contentious, polarizing, or controversial whether it be discussions in the politics & society board or opinions on certain altcoins in the alternate cryptocurrencies section.

Also, I remember theymos said something similar too. I believe that it was one of the reasons why he allows multiple accounts. I'll see if I can find the exact quote.

This wont happen and is unfeasible for a number of reasons. Firstly, multiple accounts are allowed and most people who own them seem to want to keep their alts secret or separate from their 'main' identity for whatever reason whether for good or bad so very few people will willingly offer their alts up for public display. Also, people buying and selling accounts usually want them to remain anonymous or unknown to the public also for various reasons (good or bad). In the past people would sometimes negative rep known sold accounts but this practice has largely stopped now.


I don't doubt many people will want them for those exact reasons, but there are plenty of genuine reasons for having multiple accounts. Also, the first two points may not necessarily be bad things. People are allowed to join multiple campaigns and and may just want to earn a bit of extra money and not all campaigns forbid this behavior. Personally, I think having one person with 5 accounts making quality contributions is better than 1 spammer anyway. For the second point, some naive newb may have gotten negative feedback simply for asking for a honest but naive loan attempt without collateral and thus had his account ruined. Should he be tarnished for ever? I don't think so.


Mods don't have access to IPs and other such data just admins. It's also usually not the mods or admins concern to weed out this sort of issue you have and it would be very time consuming to investigate and that's another big reason why multi accounts are allowed. I think mods should stay out of others business as much as possible in this respect (unless actual rules are broken) and the community has a pretty good system for weeding out and spotting actual scammers anyway without much staff involvement. Lastly, the bolded last part reminds me of 'if you've got nothing to hide then what's the problem' line but people have already explained the reasons why it's perfectly legitimate to have alt accounts.

yea i agree i was pretty sure multiple accounts were allowed. i still feel that the people who will disagree with this idea are involved in shady business deals or have been in the past. theres a few cases where im gonna be wrong but for the most part ppl know they can do something wrong n just create a new account.

Good idea or not this won't become a reality. Multiple accounts are allowed and people will refrain from sharing their identity between accounts.

I don't like your idea because owner shouldn't reveal their real accounts and what you said above isn't the only ones. They maybe selling/buying something or they maybe a part of a service they don't want to disclose their real account. A great example is Quickseller. He has another account* and he doesn't want to reveal it from this account, there are many reasons 'not to'.

Like above people told, it is also hard to implement or force others to do it.

While I like the concept of total disclosure appealing. I also think that it is impossible to impose on people. Just because people who are hiding something always find a way to bypass that forum regulation by some sort or VPN or other proxies.

One primary reason why people have multiple accounts in the first place is that they do not want their identity associated with potentially controversial statements or opinions.

Signature campaigns should simply weed out participants that are not doing a good job in advertising.

If an account is being held in escrow then the escrow should leave neutral trust and should change the personal message and/or the signature to reflect it being in escrow.

i think most of the people that are gonna be in disagreement of this thread are the ones who #1 have neg rep on an account and are currently in hiding, #2 farming a sig campaign with multiple accts, or #3 trying to figure a scam on 1 account to hide behind another when scam goes bad

Whether this is a good idea is arguable.

However this is impossible to enforce. Some people may decide to post their list of accounts,
but others can just ignore that and use a proxy to prevent the staff from knowing it.

presunaThis is not a good idea, have a two forum account is not illegal and it is not against the forum rules. Why someone should post here and tell how much account he owns? This is not really a good idea.
The staff members don't involve in the buying/selling of forum accounts , they interview only if "the presumed" account is hacked/stolen.

see thats another good reason for this though. if a guy has neg trust on 1 account why should he not be negged on all his alts? he screwed someone on one account and now he can go back into hiding from another?

I like this idea, though I don't think it's gonna happen.
People will hide behind words like privacy to do their businesses.
Also, just imagine then how will the negative trust flow
