So far, so good. What do I do with the private key?

Create a new wallet, then open the debug window and

importprivkey [label]

Wait until your grant shows up, then send it to your main wallet.

You want an address that starts MVTEoEo - this is the best type because the grant win will be issued as soon as you win it, and it never expires, so you'll continue accumulating grants
Use the command

oclvanitygen -X 50 MVTEoEo
It'll take a few hours - keep the private key, you'll use that later to claim the coins.

So far, so good. What do I do with the private key?

i don't think they care about the voting system. this isn't congress. your coin would be cooler without it. i like Memorycoin other than the voting feature.

agreed
makes my head hurt and it sucks how people who can tolerate this "angle" are gonna get an edge on others..

We need more vote for EFF and Amnesty, so that the 2 unknown rich men don't get all the grants, and too show that the voting is not cheated.

Or may be the richest could stop voting for themselves to forge more confidence in memorycoin...

The pool voting exploit is a problem too.

I agree with you - it is in the large coin holders short term self-interest to vote to award grants to themselves, but it's in their enlightened self-interest to vote devs and the MC foundation. Not only do the devs and MC foundation add value to the coin, but as you say, if it is clear coin holders are voting for grants that benefit the coin (or for charity until there are credible grant proposals), that will increase confidence and value of the coin.

It'll be interesting to see whether self-interest or enlightened self-interest wins out.

Here's the latest voting - notice I've added the balances of the top 20 addresses together with their preferences . . .

I'm going to stop posting these now . . they're cluttering up the thread too much. I'll shortly upload a new client, and you'll be able to see the voting results in your debug file in future.

I think I've got a handle on the voting mechanism now.  Image 5 people are running for office (like the party primaries in USA when anyone can run).  When you vote, you get ONLY ONE VOTE and might want Candidate #1 to win  (you might respect candidate #3 also, but then again, you only get one vote).

Election Process
************
Vote is held.  Votes are counted.

Did the winner win by majority (>50%)?   {Had the largest MEG votes(balance) > 50% of those voting (or remaining to vote).}

If YES, they are elected.  {Grant award goes to them.}

If NOT A MAJORITY, the candidate with lowest number of votes is removed from the ballot and the vote is held again without that lowest candidate on the ballot.  Some who voted for that candidate will be disgruntled and not vote again {you have no backup grant proposal}; others will vote for the other candidate that they respect {these are your next highest grant proposals}.

So, as you can see, if you want your candidate to win, you need to vote for them first.  If you vote for your backup first, then your real favorite candidate might be voted out.

Yes - this is close. I think you're describing Instant Runoff or the Alternative Vote.

MemoryCoin uses STV - here's a simple worked example . .
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_transferable_vote#Example

(For more specifics, we use the Droop quota and the Gregory method)

Thinking of it this way, I see several revenue opportunities.

First, you can sell your votes to someone for a specific amount of time.  {I have 280 votes....}
Second, a voting pool could be created where people can vote for the pool grant proposal.  If successful, the reward could be split among the voting pool electorate.  This has added advantage of killing off the hoarders.

It's in voters short term interest to vote to receive the grant funds for themselves . . . they maybe get 1% or 2% extra . . .  but it is in their enlightened long term interest to vote for grant proposals that work to support the currency . . then the value of the currency increases by 100% or 200%.

Right now 21stcenturymoney is building a block explorer and linux clients . . you can support him by voting for his grant at

MVTEoEomFfe7WuSEepMLsorgYzCQGBVw1z

Give it a high preference please!

by sending 20 or 30 satoshis to each.

Does this mean the satoshis as in the little bits of BTC, not MEG ?

Yes -
0.00000001 = 1 Satoshi
0.00000010 = 10 Satoshi

Help me understand.  I am MVTEoEoFdHQEbGQxMYnEBaxV6shCQDxcdx and I have 288 MEG in my wallet.  Why do I see 0 next to my address?  The coins have been in the wallet since block 700.  I realize that I am under the Droop Quota currently, but I want to understand this output.

EDIT: Additional INFO, I had these coins in two different wallets.  I consolidated into one wallet.  Then I imported my Grant Address.  Might your parser be looking at the wrong wallet?  (or I could be reading\interpretting things wrong above)

Yes, probably looking at the wrong wallet. To keep things simple, you should stick to one address per wallet for MemoryCoin. I recommend you

1. Start a new wallet
2. Send all your coin to to your new address
3. Send the following amounts

10 Satoshi - MVTEoEoFdHQEbGQxMYnEBaxV6shCQDxcdx - Preference 1 - Your Own Address
20 Satoshi - MVTEoEoXmYzFydRfg5uNJRewt9tZ329fAN - Preference 2 - MC Foundation
30 Satoshi - MVTEoEoJ1vP6NHHcCTTBPy4bXfejbAqV5N - Preference 3 - EFF
40 Satoshi - MVTEoEorLyJKdtGFXfFTt3Joevk7PeRvzh - Preference 4 - Amnesty

This should reset things for you

I support this voting innovation !

However we need more clear explanations, or a full protocol graph/description.

Thanks for your work.

A lot of coin holders are using the grant system to award coins to themselves. That's great, it means people understand the voting system.

However, it may mean coins being concentrated in the hands of a few, and to cut down on this, I'd rather see grants going to projects to benefit MemoryCoin. As we don't have many of those yet, to charity.

If your main grant address doesn't meet the quota, your votes can spill over to these worthy causes. This is better than many coins being concentrated in the hands of a small number of private individuals.

With that in mind, Please add these addresses to your list of voting preferences - by sending 20 or 30 satoshis to each.

Is there a limit to the number of grants you can support?
Will only the first 2 count or can you support more?

I think I put in a limit of 20 or something thereabouts - hopefully won't limit anything you'd want to do in practice.

always the student, never the master.
Is this voting part of the minting process or is this some kind of ponzi coin?

no i don't think so really. i think its just a really lame idea. other than that, for some reason instead of replacing bitcoin bits of code, the author wrote in all kind of "if coin = memorycoin {.... statements all through out the source. probably why its so slow. other than these small annoyances, i for one thing this is a really good coin. finally a bit of innovation, even if it came with a wierd voting system. i for one applaud Free Trade for having the guts to try something new.

If someone sends some coins to a grant address, will his vote only be for that voting round or will it also count for all future voting rounds ?

Also, if it is a vote for a fixed sized grant, say MVTE3E2 - for 300 . . . once that address has won that sized grant, future voting rounds will ignore votes for that address.
