The merit system got implemented like 10 hours ago. So expect different kinds of reactions. Either negative or positive, those reactions will add to the improvements of this system.

We will see how it goes for the coming days.

How about giving incentives to an active member who is always giving his / her sMerits to quality posts. Like +1 Merit for every 50 sMerits given. So a member will not only make quality posts, he / she will also read and give sMerits to those who deserve it.

That will be very difficult to track for moderators. So far as giving Smerits is concerned, there is no point in storing the. It is mentioned that they may be nullified if not used for long term.

I never mentioned storing sMerits. What i mean is since sMerits can only be acquire by receiving from others (except the sMerits we initially received today), why not also receive a merit when you always give sMerits to those quality posts.

Very cool feature theymos, I have high hopes this could actually reduce spam in the long run.

One more suggestion: would it be possible to make posts with many Merit points stand out a bit more? Maybe change the color of the date/time above the post, so it's easier to spot quality posts (and skip the rest)?

Well this thread grew quickly. I'm liking the merit system... seems like it should cut the shitposting down pretty quickly when they cannot rank up as easily. Sorry if I have missed this in the 19+ pages I haven't read yet but should I assume there is no point of giving merit to legendary posts?  I assume that merit sources should be seeking accounts that are needing to rank up and marking those posts?

Only other concern I would have is if I add merit to a post, it displays my name and almost makes me feel like I'm supporting the content of the post, whereas I would really just be marking a post as quality, not agreeing to the content.

I'll just go on record stating that if you see my name appear on a post, it does not mean I agree with the content of the post, but that the post is high quality enough to deserve merit.

"For current members, your initial merit score is equal to the minimum required to your rank"

Unfortunately, have to admit it is another one of those steps heavily skewed in favor of early adopters.

This is exactly my point: if the merit system would have been implemented just in a month, I'd had 100 merit by default, without any relation with post quality. 100 point that now I need to earn.

I don't complain about my position, much more, I received a red trust as "shitposter", I want to get rid of it, so I'll put any effort to write good posts.

But it seems unfair to me that a lot of high rank members have so much advantage with no other reason that their initail position.

Btw, may be to earn merit is easier that I think, even I don't think so. We'll see.

I don't know why do you feel it as an unfair system for low rank member. In world, it is natural that higher rank people in an institution (company, university, etc) such as manager or head department of something or boss or CEO has several big advantages than lower rank member such as worker or student or intern or ethers.
Do you expect that CEO has the same advantages as a worker?

I am sure that we are going to be seeing how this plays out

I will agree to that, we'll have to sit back and see how this plays out.

Since I appreciate our dialogue AND in order to prove a point (embrace change), I am sending you (a Legendary) one of my five sMerits

Also, I've not clear what happens if I'm caught selling merits points for BTCBTCBTC. Am I free to do that? Will I be publicly shamed in public plaza? Will I be permabanned from all our galaxy solar systems?
If you are caught selling Merit you will likely be negative trusted, and possibly have your ability to give merit removed.

150 merit from full member to senior rank i really wonder how long this will organically take??

it really does feel like starting over which sucks... hope this system works for the best and does weed out the bots/crap posters

if its my birthday soon can i beg for merit? what are the rules here lolll

Ironically, this kind of lulz lols jejeje hehehe post can potentially give you merits among a circle of users, whereas other users can find them annoying.

Because yeah, merit is subjective, and this is another flaw of this system.

I do not think that you are supposed to sell merit points for BTC. But how will this be tackled on this forum is a big question. There are so many members and it is not hard to game this especially for people with multiple accounts.

Life is unfair. Do you complain that bitcoin is unfair because those who got in early are now reaping the rewards? I'll tell you what really is unfair... Watching this forum be swamped by shitposters day after day who are only here to earn money for poor posts asking the same questions without reading: 'how do i sign camp' and 'wut is activity' etc. This new merit system throws a spanner in the works of anyone who thinks they can sign up here and shitpost their way through ranks because now they will get nowhere fast if they aren't going to contribute anything worthwhile.

total agree
every day, for example, i read same noobs questions.. because people dont use "search" button

old ranking worked in these years but now is necessary new paradigm

like stackoverflow, who start early gain more "stackoverflow points".. who start late had to work hard

edit for say: very good solution about merit Smiley

The system is not bad, let's see how it will get on. Only I do not really understand the method of calculating the merit, it will be added once a month or together with activi every two weeks? And it will be the same amount of merit or will it vary depending on the use of posts? Suppose if I have now 30 merita, then how many will be next month and maybe there will be a decrease in his quantity?

maybe every new user should have at least 1 sMerit ?
No good. Account farmers would get a ton of free merit, which defeats the whole purpose.

Account farmers could still be in benefit especially those who have lot of active member accounts.

Interestingly, no one has yet created a petition on https://www.change.org/ to the administration of the Bitcointalk forum about the cancellation / relaxation of these innovations?

Wait for some time, the concept is new. Smiley

the other option of "merit mods" would work better actually after thinking about it.... they look over beginner sub threads and can send Merit to members who are helping newbie ranks who cant give Merit for being helped out.... just thinking sending like 1 Merit once in a while wouldnt be enough, good help is valuable.... The rich get richer in this situation , but also does help the community so theres positives and negatives in any change most of the time
Called sources.

yes because a great way to help the community is helping new members... but those new members have no Merit to pay your efforts for helping them out.. Which kind of defeats the purpose ?? But it works just for quality posts in general , but i think helping newer members should reward something in this system imo...
Sources monitor eg the Beginners&Help section and reward those helping out newcommers. Problem solved.

So basically, merit is a way to determine those who are constructively doing sentences. If I myself got a merit, that means I am contributing quality post in this forum. Right?
Anyone can give you merit for crappy posts, so I wouldn't say that a post with merit is a quality post.

But we can review that from where that user got merit points and if it's manipulative, we can associated all accounts who is trying to manipulating the merit points.
