Yes, difficulty quickly went up out of reach of GPUs.
Buy an USB ASIC miner with 1.6G hashrate each, it is cheap and save power.

This is all good, but can you tell us more about your plans? What is your vision for the coin? What work will the pre-mine be used for and how far are you with the work? I am a little bit uneasy that you want to rush to get to Mintpal while you have not given the community anything about the coin's plans or what it is about. So far we only know it is SHA256 algorithm, the specs of the coin and the name.
