At first glance it does not seem like a good news. Microsoft already has a unhealthy control over the market share and all the data collected.

Microsoft constantly buys promising companies. I'm sure that Microsoft has long been developing its own cryptocurrency and solutions in the field of crypto. And the purchase of Github is both an investment decision and a strategic one.

It depends on the parent company's intention do they want to take a good platform to make it great or remove the competition.Microsoft being the being company it is will only think big and help the platform to grow and add to it's value.

If you think Microsoft produces a lot of developing tools and platform, which now supports also non traditional Microsoft programming languages. I don't think as well it may necessarily be a bad thing.

I think Mircosoft is looking to deepen its research into Blockchain technology. They want to grow and Blockchain will be a great tool to do that...

Microsoft VP will become CEO of Github.  Is this a attack against open source or Microsoft embracing it and wanting to bring it into the mainstream?

Personally I think microsoft coders use it so much, like constantly, and Bill Gates doesn't want to feel like he is playing second fiddle.  Also they want Github to be able to be used for non open source projects in addition to open source projects, and they don't want another entity controlling their secret data.  So they decide to buy it so they will control the data.

This is really a game changer and there is no need to speculate whether the deal will go through or not, it surely a done deal because before they would jointly address a press conference and talk about how their goals, objective and dreams "aligned", it would have gotten to a point of no return which is what we are facing and a confirmation that everyone has a price no matter how ideal or great your philosophy about life is and further solidify why its just the best for Satoshi to have stay out of sight for this invention we are all enjoying.

$7.5 billion is a whole lot of money that could turn an entire generation around. Its effect in crypto would surely be massive as I see the acquisition of various platforms that aid crypto currency as a tactical attack to take away to platform then leave it hanging which would then die naturally. Hopefully, this won't work.

Ugh. Those news are extremely concerning (my opinion may be biased as I am not the biggest Microsoft fan). Sure, as the OP said, they might want to take crypto mainstream, but probably not as we know it (more likely in a centralized and regulated manner). Fortunately there is always the option for projects to migrate to another hosting platform.

so many people dislike Microsoft for its policy and business model
I would expect many developers leave github for another similar platform
and they should do it now, save and move their project files elsewhere
a paid software business overtakes an open source code sharing platform... doesn't sound promising Undecided

Github is a code sharing platform , it has nothing to do with blockchain or cryptocurrency, yes it may have code for a blockchain network but the data remains in possession of the user so it will not affect anything or the value of the cryptocurrency market at all, there's nothing to worry about.

Github was a platform to share code where many software including the code for Linux and Unix were uploaded, now that it is on GitHub , Microsoft owns rights to use it and essentially they can put a price tag on the free software, so for the freelance software development this might be bad news

I guess its fine if Github changed owners, I just hope Microsoft is not going to mess with Github too much. If MS actually screws Github we always have bitbucket that is also enjoy using. Free private repositories FTW

You can't expect that to happen though. I suspect they bought github just to ave the data of the developers. What would happen next is very much unsure, how many anon coins developer are there whcih is now exposed to them? Is XMR coders in there too? They value so much of privacy, now look what privacy means for these people.

It means absolutely nothing for those who value privacy, they already using, VPN, tor, and other possible tools, to protect their privacy.

Cashback 15%
I stumbled upon this news a week ago and apparently, I don't like the fact that MS bought Github since I know for a fact that some famous open-source codes and projects are at risk. MS would likely monetize the platform and make the codes subscription-based for the users to access it, or for the author of the code to publish it for free (just my opinion). In any case, it's best to move the codes into somewhere else while they can since it's just no good from here on out, and while this might not be the death of open-source codes, it still poses a risks for such projects staying on the said site.

i find this announcement neither good nor bad. it will only become apparent in the next few weeks / months, whether that was good or bad. therefore, first wait and see if and how things will change through microsoft.
I have never seen positive results from globalization. I think that Microsoft will not do anything good. There are more risks than positive hopes. But this fact has already happened. We can't change anything. All I know is that Microsoft always sells poorly tested products in pursuit of profit. I'm not expecting anything good.

microsoft owning a open source platform is nt a good move for cryptocurrency and blockchain industry it means that these central authority will control the open source and open thoughts of developers may be it is one form of net neutrality

I really do not like to see the dev community upset and especially the crypto-dev community, but I think we have to seriously give Microsoft a chance.

Historically I do agree that they were not a company to be overly excited about (personally I used Windows simply because Linux and WINE was not advanced enough to run what I needed) however lately they have changed.

We - the communities - have asked them to get involved with open sourced and they have, people who pay attention to open sourced will know that Microsoft was one of the top contributors to public open source on github.

Microsoft have taken the first step with these statement:
GitHub will operate independently as a community, platform, and business. This means that GitHub will retain its developer-first values, distinctive spirit, and open extensibility. We will always support developers in their choice of any language, license, tool, platform, or cloud.

GitHub will retain its product philosophy. We love GitHub because of the deep care and thoughtfulness that goes into every facet of the developer’s experience. I understand and respect this, and know that we will continue to build tasteful, snappy, polished tools that developers love.

I personally think that, instead of thinking that the apocalypse is upon us, we do our best to hold Microsoft to their word, in the long run, it is my opinion that this will help us more than anything.

Ultimately, I just don't want to loose GitHub, and if there is a chance for it to continue as is with MS, then I'm willing to take that chance. If it does fall through and Microsoft does go darkside on us, there is no doubt in my mind that an alternative will turn up to take over (Gitlab anyone?).
