If now we can get merchant to have big bitcoin signs that would be awesome advertising, I think if people see a small bitcoin sign it can go unnoticed as I see many symbols everyday and don't pay mind to it

The new Citi report quoted in Coindesk reckons that massive merchant adoption could be part of the reason prices have been flagging
On the other hand, Citi might just be talking its own book Wink

How many merchants? millions? Really ?

Apart from the bitpay 50,000 ish merchants etc..millions of merchants now accept bitcoin since 3 weeks ago...but may not know it yet

Xapo card can be used internationally at ANY merchant who accepts traditional debit/credit cards.

Although currently there is a 3% cost as time passes this will reduce ( to zero most probably) It is important to note that buying your cigs at home has a 3% extra cost but buying them when abroad is up to 5% cheaper ( exchange rate spread up to 5% in worst cases plus 2.5% +1% fees when buying in a foreign country)

Well it's hard to say they accept BTC when they're ringing your transaction up in fiat and receiving fiat in return.

LOL  well  ok, if we have to be pedantic they are "effectively" accepting bitcoin. You may prefer ...you may now spend using bitcoin in millions of merchants worldwide.

I don't have a problem with merchants selling the bitcoin for fiat once they received it. They need to pay manufacturers in fiat, so they need to convert the bitcoin. Once bitcoin gets popular, manufacturers may accept bitcoins too. I think "millions" is exaggerated, thousands may be more realistic.

Its really and truly millions as Xapo is accepted at any Visa /Mastercard outlet

How many payment card merchants are in the US?
This is a rather complex question to produce a satisfying answer. The data is not regularly published by the largest Payment Card Companies.  Visa for example claims about 29 Million outlets and MasterCard claims 16 Million outlets.  This data is worldwide data and does not break out the US component. In addition the dataset is always a moving target.

Why Don't More Small Businesses Accept Credit Cards

The argument I hear from most merchants is that it is too expensive to accept credit cards. But I have been in stores, and you probably have as well, that have a sign on the counter that says X amount will be added to all credit card transactions. Or, that there is a minimum purchase requirement. I’m not sure if that is a legitimate way to process the transaction, but I see it often enough. Customers seem to understand that the cost of processing plastic is greater than cash and most seem willing to accept this cost from smaller merchants.

The benefits of accepting credit and debit cards far outweigh the cost. The various studies show that when people are given more payment options (beyond cash); they are more likely to make impulse purchases, join loyalty programs, and spend more per purchase – and that can only help your business to grow.

But if their concern is the fee from traditional cards.... bitpay has the answer... zero fees forever.

One of bitcoin’s leading merchant processors, BitPay, has introduced a new pricing plan that makes its basic level of service free and unlimited.

At least 240,000 hotels started accepting bitcoin when Expedia started accepting it.

Whether they convert it to fiat or not, it has been great for paying for hotels for me (getting reimbursed by my company will be interesting).

In my opinion, it's a good thing that more people are holding
and spending Bitcoins, but the great majority merchants still
prefer paypal payments instead of Bitcoin.

Yes, no one will stop this trend. More people are holding and spending btc.

This is true but some merchants still have fear over their acceptance of BTC.For instance, Bandcamp still prefer paypal payments instead of Bitcoin regardless of the large popularity of bitcoin.
