There should be an algo written that can only be mined via a smartphone.  I could finally dust off all my old worthless phones.
I think it would be very difficult to enforce such a restriction. Smartphones are designed to be able to be replicated on a computer so devs of apps can write and test apps for various smartphones. If such an algo was created then someone could simply run several instances of a smartphone VM on their computer in order to mine the coin that uses the algo

Even if such algo and such altcoin is created, your phones would be overheated very soon.

Ha, you can't mine even 1 BTC out of a smartphone for 100 years.
It's simple maths.

Ofcourse not, you will "mine" more if you are solving captchas on faucets with phone.

How mining with a smartphone?

Look the post above yours! Roll Eyes

Is it possible to mine using a smartphone? Ive seen some mining apps and curious if anyone has actually tried it

Yes, but its not profitable unless its a smartphone only coin. But it should be really hard for that..

there has been an iOS app for mining around for quite some time now. IIRC in the description at the app store it reads something like this "does it work? Yes! Will you make lots of money? No."

more of a novelty than anything.

What do you mean by novelty? What good is it if the app doesnt make money right?

Mining with smartphone even if technically possible would be morally wrong. If you are a masochist or a hipster you may want to do this tho.

Can we get this thread locked? OP's question has been answered comprehensively, and the points just keep repeating again and again...

Possible, but not really for Bitcoin. With new phones (quad core etc.) you can try some CPUcoins for fun, but don't expect high return when people are using specialized equipment everywhere. Drains battery like hell (not good), stresses CPU, heats up the phone. Leave it.

Watch out with the paid apps, I'm guessing you will never mine as much as they cost  Grin
Phones aren't designed to undergo these kind of stress. They are more for low performance and power task.High end CPU uses around 100-200 watts while high end phones use much lesser than that. Even with quad core, don't expect to earn a cent when mining for a day non stop. AFAIK, there isn't suitable apps to mine algorithm other than scrypt and SHA256. You have to build them yourself.

You will never get anything for it. Not nearly enough hashing power. Don't bother

Now old PC is not suitable for mining. So how can you think about mining with Smartphone. I think is it a waste of

a waste of... what? Time? Money? Power?

Lol how about all of the above.

Unless you have an ASIC there is no point in mining now IMO

If you have an early generation of ASIC, the power efficiency won't be good and you will be wasting money running the miner.
