Everyone talks about the slippery slope of banning discussions, but it's time we talk about the slippery slope of unbanning discussions.

I suggest that if giveaway threads are brought back, it's only reasonable to bring back animal porn threads, too. After, we can bring back the "assassination contracts" subforum to the public marketplace instead of stuffing it in the donators-only subforum.

It's time those shit coins find other forums. Too much spam in here.

That's why the Alt Coin Sub Forum needs to be shutdown.

As long as Theymos allows it to live here, it will never establish anywhere else.

Please someone make an altcointalk, and make yourself a board for each alt-coin lol.

This already exists: https://cryptocointalk.com/

Enjoy with all it's ridiculousness.

Oh my, devs can moderate their own child boards there. That's an...interesting decision.

So, devs of a coin can remove any posts talking something bad about the coin lol Cheesy.

BTC giveaways are allowed. Most are in games and rounds, along with the other spammy "post here for x" type posts. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=71.0

And before anyone complains about unfairness, yes there is a huge difference between having a child board for giveaways of bitcoin, which this forum was created for and is dedicated to, and making a child board for giveaways of 600+ and counting coins.

My guess 60 - 80 percent of users of this site uses alt coins. If the traffic of this site drop to 50 - 80 percent there is a possibility that they will put it back. I could be wrong as they don't need money anymore as per theymos they already have millions.

If they completely banned alt coins I'm seeing another forum that could rival this forum in a few months.

I think this decision will definitely open up for another board to thrive, but I'm not sure whether theymos or the admins would be bothered by the lesser traffic like as you said, they don't need the money. I'm sure as Bitcoin grows more people will flock to this site over the year anyway.

We have never had any intention to turn Bitcointalk into Crytptocointalk. The hope has always been that people will develop their own forums for their own coins,

Half of these devs can't even be bothered coming up with a decent name or coin logo so I doubt they'd spend time creating a new forum. The majority of the these coins wouldn't survive outside of this forum anyway and even with big coins like Litecoin their forums are pretty much dead.

I was surprised that we got new subsections when we did, but I think having a separate subsection for giveaways would've solved most problems here.

Welcome to the SaltySpitoon, how Tough are ya?
Giveaways are an excuse for the coin to be premined and for them to give out a little coin while keeping the rest for themselfs. You would think the Dev would just mine their own coin and ask for donations. If it's a crap/shit coin they would get no donations and the coin will die. This will also help lower the amount of crap/shit coins be released. Since now they need to bring something new to the table instead of bribes/giveaways.

Yeah, I always hate this excuse when people claim pre-mines are for giveaways. These giveaways are just free publicity for crapcoins to give cryptoplebs some free worthless coins and they always lap them up regardless of crappy name etc.

This had absolutely no factor in the decision to disallow giveaways. The Bitcointalk admins really have little to no interest in Alt coins, nor whether they are premined, "scam coins", "shit coins" or whatever. It has to do with the sheer amount of volume that they were contributing to the forum, for a section that is non essential to the Bitcoin forums. We have never had any intention to turn Bitcointalk into Crytptocointalk. The hope has always been that people will develop their own forums for their own coins, and basic discussion/announcements can be done here for publicity. We do not have enough space or moderation power to keep up with the current rate that Alt Coins are coming into being, and the other issues the huge amount of posts that a person can make between 600 giveaway threads.

Giveaway threads are not coming back in the foreseeable future. Maybe with the new forum software? Possibly? But I wouldn't bet on that.

This makes no sense, they were popular so you are banning them.  Many users don't like them, but they are only a small part of the sites traffic.  You want users to go elsewhere, but bitcointalk is where most people start, so why not grow your user base?

The Point is simple. This is Bitcointalk. Many People here (like me) come here to talk and get information about Bitcoin. We don't want this forum to grow in a general Crypto Forum. In that case we would need to find another Forum dedicated to Bitcoin, but we already have this here.

If your want the altcoin section to grow, you are basically asking the Bitcoiners to leave Bitcointalk. If they would do so, the new main forum would become the one mostly frequented, which would mean altcoiners would simply try to conquer that one, too.

Absolutely agree! Well said ..

I am glad this  happened. The Giveaway thread was just going  out of control. we should have threads that can be informative and support the alt coin ecosystem.

If you had looked at the Altcoin section a few days back the only thing you would see is a section filled with giveaway.

May be a  subsection for giveaway's only would be a  better fit, but this is also fine.

people wanting to do giveaways can still do giveaway as long as they dont encourage massive address spam.

Giveaway's are  not dead. so dont worry about it.

Doesn't use these forums that often.
Oh, stop being an idiot. Giveaway threads don't belong in a bitcoin discussion forum - this is not your 'Get a free handout of WhateverNewCoinHasJustBeenReleasedCoin' forum.

I disagree with the decision to ban the giveaway threads. One of the main reasons I even come here.

Going to other forums is more registration and as this site has demonstrated, more risk from hackers.  Granted that's my problem but you seemed to have a great community here, why exclude segments of it if there isn't really any harm?

Your forum your rules, but when you finish the upgrade to the new forum software will you be able to reinstate the altcoin giveaways?
