I always look for the coin's detailed info before purchasing.
Of course making a study and research about the new coins you want to invest or trade with is the safest thing to do before making a transaction. And this bot channel that post new pairs on exchanges is a great idea and a big help to all traders specially beginners one. I hope that this channel is safe.
investing in ico is a long term. Buying new coins is easier. If a coin is finaly on an exchange, than its probably not a scam!
That is not the case we consider it as scam because after raising I'd they didn't perform any development what they mentioned in ICO. Before ICO they are upto their promises but after ICO some owners won't bother about their reputation.

There are a few signs for a good ICO though.

It's good for traders because I have new coins to see them new so sure they'll invest in it and they'll get them to buy new traders.
