How about allowing one and only one thread for each altcoin, and that thread being the official altcoin announcement?

I like the idea, it's all that's needed to see the most popular coins. The top page of each altcoin thread should have links to all the related threads anyways.

So you mean, allowing no one to post in the alt currencies section besides the official coin release which redirects them to the coin specific forum? That is and idea, not many would like it I don't think, but it definitely is an idea, if not a last resort type.

What I prefer would be a child board in the Alternate cryptocurrencies section, like:
Child Boards: Official Threads

In that section, only one official thread from each alt coin would be allowed. The original Alternate cryptocurrencies section would still exist and people could put their related threads there.

Would it be possible to give each coin a single tag/code and the user could choose to ignore/not see certain tags, like you can ignore other posters? General messages and languages could have tags too. On the 'frontpage' one would be able to select and save (+ quickly change) preferences, only see what one is interested in...
When starting a new thread, people would have to choose a tag from the pool. Something like this:

000 | Message from the Admin (always present)
001 | Bitcoin
002 | Litecoin
003 | Whatevercoin 1
004 | Whatevercoin 2
etc., etc.
020 | Russian
021 | Chinese
etc., etc.

Example: Enable tag '001', '004', '020' etc. and all you would see is general messages from the admin/moderator, threads about Bitcoin, Whatevercoin 2 and Russian ones, nothing else.... until you select more tags.

This board needs to be a complete mess.  That's the only way it will stay calm and peaceful like it is.  If you create a sub-board for Namecoin and Litecoin, then you'll have to create boards for Feathercoin, Junkcoin, might as well do Solidcoin, and the other 20 different coins that came out this month.  There would be no end.  A new coin every day = new board every day, not going to happen on bitcointalk.  On Bitcoin Trading I do exactly that: create subsections for all new altcoins, but even I have to admit.. It's a pain to have to add new sections every day.

+1 needs child boards in alts for recognised alts

Who decides what the recognized alts are? And what is the definition of a recognized alt?

Very true, this board is a complete mess.

What would be nice is a sub forum for all of the Major/Minor coins listed, and a new board for all of these clones

I asked about adding child boards a while ago, the answer was no. The reasoning being, this is a Bitcoin forum. The fact that altcoins are even allowed to post here is a formality really. The forums don't want to get too involved in alt coins, besides moving alt currency chatter that would be spam to its own section.

And more moderators to fight the scammers and to clean this forum up!

The problem right now lies with all of the new currencies "spamming" the board. A lot of people find them offensive or a scam, but the problem is, there is no definition of what is a "scam" coin, so the moderation staff (myself included) can do very little about all of the new coins.

And, not to mention, the forum staff doesn't hunt scammers. Its up for the users to find scammers, and then provide the case in the Scam Accusation section of the Trading board.

If anyone can think of a solution, I'm sure everyone would be glad to hear.

Honestly I don't think we need child boards for each currency, as it would just get diluted to far and less useful.

Keep alt-coins the same as it is, but make a specific trading child forum where any buying / selling takes place. They are the high turnover posts that can sometimes clutter up the forum.

Same here, I agree with this.  Or something for the more prevalent coins.  But then again, this is a Bitcoin Forum...

I agree

I have asked for the same thing and contributed to many further posts asking for child boards... the mods don't care and never will.

Maybe because this is bitcointalk.org?  Everyone should be happy there's even an alt subforum at all.

Either that or we all should get a new forum... Altcointalk as they seem less than responsive to this suggestion. It has been made many times. I think your market cap or total hash should be the metric. When you reach X hash/s then your coin gets a child board.

Agreed, this board is so cluttered in the last month its almost impossible to read. Its really a disaster now.

It needs a LTC child board, one for other established alternate cryptos like PPC, NMC and TRC, and a New Alt Coins board...
