Democracy isn't free. Rather, democracy is an underhanded, sly, covert method to get to dictatorship. Here's how it works.
Democracy is majority rule. Fifty-one % of the people win the vote for something. Forty-nine % of the people are made slaves of the thing they lost the vote on = a form of dictatorship by the majority.
Then, if the population is large, the 51% give the implementation of what they won in the vote, over to a handful of people in government. The government people may or may not implement the "thing." If they DO implement it, they probably won't implement it in the way the voters wanted.
In the USA there are about 330 million people. But the laws are made by less than 1,000 people in Federal Government. And of these less-than-1,000, only a small handful are in control of the rest. And the laws they make often aren't in line with what any of the 330 million wanted in the first place.
So you see? Democracy is simply a tricky way to get to dictatorship by a small group. And often, if there is a poplular guy in the small group, he becomes like a dictator all by himself.
Figure something else out. Democracy is crap.
