Everyone knows who were Mozart, Beethoven, Bach .
Yes, classical composers like the ones you mentioned are probably the most respected today. They were not always respected back in their days though.
I wish I had the ability to compose songs in my head like Mozart Sad

Its hard to choose. New famous artist and rock bands can be considered respected? How do you define respected. By the number of people listening? The number of awards? The number of old people that likes it? The media likes it? or by The elites like it?

The only music I truly respect is classical music. Nowadays artist first must be dead to fully earn respect of people imo.

Elvis,Bob dylan,Roger Waters, John Lennon (NOT THE BEATLES),Eric Clapton,Stevie ray Vaughn,BB King.

Just to name a few.

Elvis stole music from black people, so no.

Dylan and Roger Waters are liberal windbags, so no.

John Lennon was a hypocrite (preached peace and love, but beat his first wife and son before abandoning them)

Eric Clapton is okay, but hasn't done anything remarkable in a long time. And he stole George Harrison's wife.

Not sure who Stevie Ray Vaughn is

I know BB King, but can't name any of his songs off the top of my head. I'm guessing most people under 40 have a pretty faint idea of who he is

Dank or Paganini maybe.

I don't listen to rap (crap) music and I've never even heard of either of these two, so I don't think they're universally known.

Only tools refer to rap as crap. Why would you dismiss an entire genre of music?

It's just shouting words into a microphone and it requires no talent. Anyone could practice and become a rapper in a day, I'm just not impressed by that genre.

That's an absolute moronic thing to say, but is to be expected from the type of people who make such ignorant and clichéd statements as you do. I can guarantee if you spent a year practising you wouldn't be able to come up with even a half decent rap performance. Do poets not have talent to you? Do music producers not have talent? Do guitarists not have talent? I find it's usually the people like you that lack any sort of talent and intelligence.

Meh, poetry is pretty dull. If it's put to music with a beat it can be good, but otherwise I'm not interested.

And I don't hate all rap. I mean, I've always liked the Beastie Boys. But you've got to admit, if you and two of your college buddies decided you wanted to perform music, but none of you could sing or play any instruments, you'd probably go down the same route as the Beastie Boys (rap).

It's only dull to dull people. Something tells me you probably haven't delved that deep into poetry just as you haven't into hip-hop. Rap is essentially poetry put to a beat. I wouldn't want to listen to any that wasn't.

And the Beastie Boys can play instruments.

Wow wow strong words. Are you sure that you really think so? You can be not impressed and just dislike it. It`s not my favourite one too. But I would never say that it requires no talent... I am very impressed for their hard work and just imagine if you could say words with this speed Smiley

There are many types of rap, the 'shouting' kind is just one branch of rap.
There are types which are rather 'quiet'.  Wink

Don't most rock singers just 'shout words into a microphone' too?

People around the world listen to different kinds of music in different time periods, it will be difficult enough to shortlist to a handful.
Bach, Beatles, Bob Marley, Bieber? (These are just from the 'B's)
