Why is theymos the administrator of Bitcointalk? What makes you the perfect admin, and how did you get to where you are now?

The question I am mostly interested in. Do let me know too if someone know more about this.

Here’s the answer from himself:

The story of how I became head admin is actually pretty boring. Moderators were needed, so I was made a global moderator. Then admins were needed, so I was made an admin. Then over time the other admins slowly lost interest and resigned until I was the only one left. I guess most of the people who were around here to see this have more-or-less left the community now. That's a bit sad.

It's not entirely clear, but for simplicity I usually say that I became head admin at the beginning of 2011, a little over a year after the forum was created.

The forum was originally located at bitcoin.org/smf, then forum.bitcoin.org (hence the redirect), and finally bitcointalk.org. Fun fact: The name "bitcointalk" was invented by Jeff Garzik, and he's the one who bought the domain.

Edit:

What happened? Did you delete your this post? ImThour?

Theymos is so far-sighted that he knew that 10 years later I would ask these questions, but the answers are already out there somewhere. We just need to find them. Magnificent!  Grin
Cmon theymos just answer the bloody questions. LoyceV is getting impatient and really pissed off right now. If not for me and LoyceV, do it for the betterment of humanity. And the kids also, we can't forget the kids.

I just want to remind theymos that whenever he is done with the questions, he can PM me the replies. @theymos You don't have to go that much into detail for it to take so much time. It seems that week in and week out he keeps forgetting to send the answers. I don't know why that is. Tongue
Pmalek, It's been more than 1 year since you created this thread and theymos haven't taken the initiative to answer any of those 30 questions since then. I think theymos really don't want to answer them in threads or even send you short answers to every question you ask. He might be shy, but he probably didn't think it was important to answer either. Lol

I don't think answering these questions would help me or anyone to identify theymos, nor would I take part in such actions. Sure, there is the curiosity factor, but not for malicious intents. Many people would want to know who theymos is, how he is like, or who was/were satoshi. The only thing that makes people different is what they would do with that information. So before asking any further questions, I will give theymos some more time to answer the ones from OP. I am sure it's on top of his priority list, let's give him some space.

Below are My 30 Questions for theymos.

None of your questions are bad Pmalek - and sure, maybe there are some further questions that could be asked, too.

Could you imagine if theymos actually answered around 70% or more of the 30 questions with somewhat satisfying responses?  Likely it would not be good for OPsec... and even though historically some folks have been probing about theymos, you gotta hand it to him that he has maintained pretty decent Opsec..

Also Pmalek, I have noticed from some of your further elaboration/responsive posts, that you seem to be attempting to get some substantive answers from theymos while at the same time attempting to avoid OPsec breaches, and surely it could be difficult to achieve both - even though the linked-reddit AMA thread from Rikafip did show that theymos has had his moments of opening up in ways that likely go beyond expectations (or even good judgement regarding some of the seemingly better OPsec practices).

Surely it is possible that some of us have passed theymos in the mall without have any kind of meaningful clue that such rl person had happened to have been theymos.. congrats theymos regarding such an accomplishment, to date..

I am having some difficulties imagining that theymos would ONLY maintain a couple of accounts on this here forum, so there seems to be decent likelihood that theymos has been various other member(s) too.. besides the two accounts that have his name contained therein.

Regarding this thread and the permissiveness of the forum allowing such thread to continue, for sure there are way more power to put together various stories that are way more powerful than any single member or set of members could accomplish on their own... For a variety of reasons, theymos seems to be much braver than me for allowing this thread to continue to exist.... a playing of 3d chess?  not sure, and not sure if it really matters very much in the whole scheme of things?

I should have added this question as well:
- Have you ever claimed a bitcoin fork?

I see no reason not to add questions (or reformulate questions) at your own discretion.

Have you locked into your originally formulation of 30 questions for some reason?  No reason NOT to update.. .or add more or make the existing ones better (if such a thing is possible)... maybe convert to 50 questions.. or 44 questions, if there might be some value in that?  or even going the other way? 18 questions?

My two cents ... As far as I know, Theymos personal data is not a secret, so it seems to me that the first question disappears.

Surely there is a difference between various evidentiary assertions regarding theymos or anyone else and actually admitting specifically to such evidentiary assertions to change the confirmation level of such information.

Furthermore, I have seen posts from theymos in which he has wittingly or unwittingly admitted to certain personal pieces of information (even beyond the reddit AMA thread)... nothing wrong with that I suppose... and for sure, theymos could choose to respond to these 30 questions in his own way - yet again, there seems to be very little reason for theymos to actually encourage such forms of interrogations by actually responding (but surely I had been surprised in some other threads to see him respond to some matters that I had thought that he would not respond)... so yeah doesn't really seem to hurt to ask some of these kinds of questions... whether theymos perceive them as relatively polite and reasonable or if theymos might have other reasons to have reservations to clarify some of these matters...

For example, some of the questions are forum substantive regarding the progression of the merit/trust systems, and surely there are times in which some members in these here parts seem to be quite justified in receiving some explanations regarding some progress (or lack thereof) in the system, so surely sometimes we have been left hanging regarding the extent to which some of these systems may be achieving forum goals or to have some contrary to forum goals within how they might be used, from time to time.

Sometimes, we might perceive that some aspects of these systems will continue, then BBBBBaaaaaammmm, substantive and material changes are put into effect that had not really been announced in any kind of meaningful public way.... by the way, in this regard, can you even imagine theymos telegraphing that there seems to be a problem regarding x, y and z practices, but if he mentions those problems publicly (even though many folks might already anticipate those to be problems), then the announcement does not really help to resolve any aspects of the problematic areas, so there is some value in just NOT saying anything.. or maybe even saying the opposite or having some misconceptions to persist, perhaps? perhaps?

Although speaking in the abstract, he is 1.66 times younger than Vod and he is twins in the horoscope.

I never claimed to be any kind of math wizard, but for me, this is a weird way of expressing a smaller number as compared with a bigger number.. so in that sense, I am confused regarding how to calculate such 1.66x number.

It seems to me that the more straight-forward way to express a relatively smaller number would be to express it as a fraction rather than as a multiple.  What am I missing?  How is this 1.66x number calculated.

Let's say that theymos's age were to be somewhere in the ballpark of 30 years old, then 1.66x of 30 would be 49.8 years old (for Vod)..,.  However, why wouldn't you just proclaim that theymos is around 60% the age of Vod?  Were you trying to say 60%, icopress?

I am asking more of a mathematical expression question rather than really wanting to know the actual underlying numbers.  Did you mean to say 60% rather than 1.66x because wouldn't the actual calculation of 1.66x lead to a negative number, and we would not want a negative number as our results, would we?  Unless we believe that theymos has somehow discovered the fountain of youth, and is not sharing that information with us, not even via pm.. that would not be the right thing to do, right?

Wow how daring Pmalek how daring.

I remember someone scared me that if you press ask any member such questions you might be banned for life.
Nah, that would go against the whole freedom-providing philosophy of Bitcointalk. And besides, there are different ways to look at those questions. Especially the one about what Satoshi would say if he/she came back. If you think today's forum is worse than what it was in the past, you might look at that question and see it as provocative. On the other hand, if you don't remember the atmosphere on the old Bitcointalk or you think this one is the same or even better, that's just a normal question. Wink

•   If Satoshi came back tomorrow, do you think he would be happy with how we use bitcoin? What about the forum? What would he think of it?
•   What is your opinion on altcoins in general?
•   Do you miss certain members who left the forum, and which ones would you like to see come back?
•   How has bitcoin/Bitcoin changed your life for better or worse?

Wow how daring Pmalek how daring.

I remember someone scared me that if you press ask any member such questions you might be banned for life.

Anyway from your questions I would love to hear answers to above selected questions.

Also I would have included some questions related to Satoshi as if it was 2013.

Finally Theymos, releases IP Address of Satotshi and
PM's between Satoshi and Theymos

I'll probably release Satoshi's PMs and logged IPs addresses in ~8 years. This'd probably be of great historical interest. (Though he always used Tor, as far as I can tell.)

But again I heard he said let’s keep it a secret. So no he won’t be releasing any details.

•   Most importantly: ass or tits?

Another important question indeed r/GirlsGoneBitcoin If u/theymos is true.

I'm not sure thymos read threads in reputation board, I've never come across any of his post or replies here....
I bet you he does, especially if his name is in the title.  I've often been surprised when he posts in a thread I would have sworn he wouldn't have read.  Plus I know he reads posts in Meta, which is pretty close to Reputation (in my view, anyway).

I've never seen any of this response on the thread I reply to, so everytime I want to read his posts or check his online habits, I go to his profile. He primarily posts in the P&S section with BaDecker, aside from bumping his DT and forum ad thread. Well, I'm still hopeful he'll answer those questions of yours that have piqued my interest.

Back in 2013 he did reddit AMA in which he shared some info about himself, including his age. An interesting read, I suggest you check it if you haven't already. If he told the truth, he is much younger than I initially thought he is.
It is interesting to see what theymos said when he was asked what Bitcoin service would he like to see developed, and he said decentralized Bitcoin exchange.
He said that this is more difficult to make it than people think, and fast forward 8 years we only have one exchange we can call decentralized on Bitcoin and that is Bisq.
It would be interesting to hear what he has to say now about that topic of decentralized exchanges.

Do you or anyone else here know how old he is?  I'm not sure if I ever really thought about it, but now I'm curious.
Yes, I know how old he is and when his birthday (at least it seems to me that I know, judging by the publicly available data.), but I suppose it would be unethical to publish this information here. Although speaking in the abstract, he is 1.66 times younger than Vod and he is twins in the horoscope. While working on my post archive yesterday, I noticed how inactive theymos is these days (when it comes to posting):
I think he is online every day, but you are right. When it comes to posting, he doesn't post a lot. You can find him mostly in the Economics or Auctions boards, sometimes in Meta when he updates the DT logs... Last month he wrote only 7 posts.

Yeah... Just asked that question out of curiosity as I know there are hundreds of theymos out there and as far as I know BTT  theymos is not a gambler, he is more interested in American politics.  Besides theymos wouldn't be on stake.com trying to win some Litcoin giveaway

How about adding this 31st question: How about the chances of you are to be the real Satohi.
Are you a supporter of the Bitcoin recession? As a supporter of laissez-faire, Theymos understands that such a clumsy hype will only hurt bitcoin. Besides, I would not want Theymos to become the subject of NSA surveillance, since everyone understands perfectly well that Satoshi's appearance will have a political character, given the impact that his ideas have had on an entire generation, (even if Satoshi only owns 50 bitcoins). Also, when I mentioned Bitcoin Recession, I was implying that identifying a person like Satoshi would jeopardize an already fragile crypto sector.

our business may be adversely affected if the markets for Bitcoin [...] including as a result of the following factors: the identification of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous person or persons who developed Bitcoin, or the transfer of Satoshi’s Bitcoins;
The provisions below are included in the legal documents of almost all companies in one way or another related to Bitcoin. Truth be told, I wouldn't worry too much about it, since in the event of a mega-recession, I will buy more BTC!

I have reasons to believe that LoyceV will leave the forum for good if theymos doesn’t come through.
Only if theymos changes my name or bans me (or both ).

Seriously though: I (think I) know the answer to several questions already, just from reading theymos' posts. I don't really want to dig through it again to find it though.

do we really want to know that theymos holds massive BCH/BSV bags?
Actually, on behalf of the forum, he does. It's worth slightly more than a million dollars.

Most importantly: ass or tits?
You should start with the most imporant question, let's not forget theymos is a r/GirlsGoneBitcoin moderator.

No way he would answer all this. He doesn't need to.
Of course he doesn't need to, but usually when people give interviews like this (and there are plenty of them), the interviewee doesn't have a gun to his head.

True, but it enables peer pressure (especially if many people also wish same thing).

Thanks Halab!
We now know how he got that username, and we have also established that he is a gamer (or was a gamer). Somehow gaming and science-fiction often go hand in hand, so I would agree with dkbit98 as well that theymos probably likes sci-fi movies. He might even own the Harry Potter series.

It's interesting that after a little search, I found several sources that mention theymos by a "real name". There are even threads on Bitcointalk where that name is mentioned. No idea how true/false that is and what it's based on, but I am not going to mention the name here for obvious reasons. It's not that hard to find and I am sure many people are already aware of it.

I am curious why he selected the theymos username. How did he come up with it, and what does it mean to him?

I have a beginning of answer for this question, he wrote himself the origin of his username here :

I originally made mine for an RPG character: Theymos Amastica. It was created without much thought, being only a minor adjustment of the "Thamior" and "Amastacia" names given as elven name examples in the D&D 3.5 Player's Handbook. I began using it for all of my online game accounts, as well, and then I used it even for non-game accounts so I wouldn't have to remember multiple usernames. (At this point most of my online accounts were game-related.)

I sometimes wish that I had chosen something better and more meaningful, though it is nicely unique: almost all Google results for "theymos" are related to me. It would be very difficult to change at this point, after using it for 5+ years.

And I have the answer to your last question and he prefers.... Arghhhh... I'm dead Smiley.

tits Man no doubt, all US residents only care about tits because the girls are not pretty endowed at the back. I know this because I know things.

I just wanted to chime in and say that this is extremely off base. Besides being an ass man myself, it is practically American tradition to celebrate the female posterior. We invented the Daisy Dukes, twerking, and who could forget the Sir Mix-a-Lot classic Baby Got Back? I think a majority of American males transition from being a tits to an ass man around the time they lose their virginity...

My two cents ... As far as I know, Theymos personal data is not a secret, so it seems to me that the first question disappears. And the position of Admin held by him is simply a coincidence (if I remember correctly, his candidacy was proposed in the chat, to which he replied something in the spirit of "why not").

As for the rest of the questions, some of us can easily give an affirmative answer, including me (especially those who were at least a little interested in the history of the forum). So if I had the opportunity to get an answer to one question, I would ask about the details of thread №3, namely, whether these mysterious logs remained at his disposal, (in case someone wants to correct me, I want to say that I know that he registered after these events).

One last question for theymos, are we ever going to see new bitcointalk forum software or was that just one more dream and dead project?
By the way, even if this constantly repeated question annoys me a little, then I think that Theymos is even more so.  Cheesy

Although I am curious to know all the answers but there a few terrible questions. For example, who is theymos, we don't expect these answers from a decentralized crypto user due to privacy issues.
Why it's terrible? It's obvious that he isn't asking his real name or other sensitive personal information.

Nobody likes to answer bunch of questions and I think 30 is a bit too much, not to mention that all bits of information you leave online can potentially help to identify his real identity if he is being honest.
Hey, don't speak for everyone Wink. If you check how many responses @zasad@ thread with questions got, it wouldn't be right to say that nobody likes to answer such questions. Offcourse, merits played it's role there, but I think that even without, there would be many responses.
I doubt that theymos will respond to these questions, but if he would it, it would so damn interesting. We really don't know much about our boss.

You forgot a few questions to add>
- which is his favourite boy's band?
- name of his favourite teacher?
That would sound like I am trying to find the secret answer to a question to reset his email password.
- The name of your first pet.

This is a horrible idea. I mean... do we really want to know that theymos holds massive BCH/BSV bags?
He might own some grin and monero. I doubt he has ether.

I should have added this question as well:
- Have you ever claimed a bitcoin fork?

If you could permaban one poster for no reason other than thinking they’re a dick, who?
Wasn't game-protect banned for something like that? I don't remember reading about the reason for his ban, not that I want him back.

Are you a tits or ass man?
I already asked him that.

...but there a few terrible questions. For example, who is theymos, we don't expect these answers from a decentralized crypto user due to privacy issues.
That one wasn't meant to identify him by name. I am curious why he selected the theymos username. How did he come up with it, and what does it mean to him?

Nobody likes to answer bunch of questions and I think 30 is a bit too much, not to mention that all bits of information you leave online can potentially help to identify his real identity if he is being honest.
You forgot to ask theymos about his favorite scary movie, but if someone ever makes a movie about Satoshi I am sure that theymos would play big part in it among all other important characters.
I personally think theymos loves sci-fi movies after reading one of his topics from 2017 for building a seastead, but maybe this was just younger version of theymos with different dreams.

The Bitcoin price is amazingly high, and it has stayed amazingly high for quite some time. I've been expecting it to crash for the last year, and I was especially expecting it to crash in response to the various B2X nonsense, but it's still quite high. These high prices may well be long-term-stable. Therefore, since we gentlemen are in fact the new wealthy elite, I think that the time has come to work toward a project that I know a lot of early Bitcoiners (including myself) have always dreamed of: a mostly-sovereign libertarian seastead. There must be a lot of Bitcoin millionaires who would be willing to work toward this.

Dream of building a seastead may be dead or hibernating but what would theymos say about Bitcoin price today?
In November 17 2017 Bitcoin was around $7,780, and fast forward few years at May 5th 2021, One Bitcoin is now worth around $57,500, so is he expecting it to crash any time soon?

Here is one of the rear post made by theymos reviewing other altcoins in August 2017, and I see he likes Monero most for obvious reasons:

Most altcoins are pure pump-and-dump, but there are a small handful that actually have some technical merit. I will list them here, according to my opinion/understanding.
...

One last question for theymos, are we ever going to see new bitcointalk forum software or was that just one more dream and dead project?

But of course, I will be happy to hear. Another is who handling the forum ban, this answer will fill the moderator PM who is handling the forum ban. But I believe there few only who handling the forum ban. Anyway thanks for raising these questions, although we can't force anyone on the forum, but we can expect at least.

Waiting for theymos reply..........

No way he would answer all this. He doesn't need to.
Of course he doesn't need to, but usually when people give interviews like this (and there are plenty of them), the interviewee doesn't have a gun to his head.  If Theymos did all of that ignoring as claimed by OP--and I've no reason to doubt him--he's either really busy or just doesn't want to take part in this.  I know absolutely nothing about the person behind the Theymos username, but I'm assuming he's a pretty private person, as are a lot of folks on bitcointalk.

I'd be interested in his answers to these questions in particular:

•   Several years have passed since the introduction of merits and trust flags. Are you happy with how these systems operate today?
•   Is theymos a vengeful person? Do you hold grudges against people?

•   What do you think of all the drama and the bickering on Bitcointalk?
•   It is my personal opinion that Bitcointalk would be a better place if proven scammers would be banned. Tell me why I am wrong?
Especially the last one, because it's always baffled me that scammers aren't banned here.  I've heard all the reasons from multiple members, and they all pretty much sound like excuses--especially since every other forum I've visited bans scammers on the spot, even if there's not rock-solid proof.

I'd also love to hear his opinion about how the merit system is working out.  His view on the trust flags I couldn't care less about, because I think they're an unnecessarily complicated addition to a trust system that's already overly complicated.

After a few sleepless nights, I came up with something else. I will use the freedoms that theymos gave us and force him to do something he clearly doesn’t want to do. It’s only fair, I think. Smiley
You can use your freedom of expression, sure, no one has the right to stop you, that's a good idea! But... theymos have another right that's much stronger, guess what? that is the right to be silent  Cheesy he has no obligation to answer your questions, and I bet you can't force him to do this if he doesn't want  Cheesy
Anyway, let's see if your topic can reach him  Cheesy

Ever since I saw zasad@’s thread [Interviews] with Bitcointalk members, I wondered why there was no interview with theymos, our administrator. I figured zasad@ probably asked him, but theymos simply ignored him.

I concluded that zasad@ shouldn’t be the only one to get ignored, so I PMed theymos, worked my charms and asked to do an interview with him. And guess what…? Nothing! Being a stubborn bastard, I tried again after a few weeks, but I added circa 30 questions in the PM this time. Still, theymos didn’t reply back.

After a few sleepless nights, I came up with something else. I will use the freedoms that theymos gave us and force him to do something he clearly doesn’t want to do. It’s only fair, I think. Smiley

Below are My 30 Questions for theymos.
I have reasons to believe that LoyceV will leave the forum for good if theymos doesn’t come through. That would be a massive loss for the forum, and theymos is the only one who can prevent that.

Let’s make our own profile of our admin based on the information we can find on him and the things we already know. We can help him and answer the questions in his name.

DISCLAIMER: Parts of the OP might not be entirely accurate. Take it with a grain of salt and relax.

•   Who or what is theymos? What is the significance of your username?
•   Why is theymos the administrator of Bitcointalk? What makes you the perfect admin, and how did you get to where you are now?
•   Which part related to bitcoin interests you the most?

•   How much of the daily moderation work do you carry out personally? Deleting posts, merging threads, and stuff like that?
•   When it comes to banning members for breaking forum rules, who from the team is the ultimate ban-hammer, and who is more likely to give users a second chance?

•   Does theymos own any altcoins?
•   Several years have passed since the introduction of merits and trust flags. Are you happy with how these systems operate today?
•   Is there anything you wish you had done differently on Bitcointalk?

•   If Satoshi came back tomorrow, do you think he would be happy with how we use bitcoin? What about the forum? What would he think of it?
•   Is theymos a vengeful person? Do you hold grudges against people?

•   What do you think of all the drama and the bickering on Bitcointalk?
•   What is your opinion on altcoins in general?
•   Do you believe that DeFi has any future, or is it a hype that will soon pass?

•   What is going on with Grin? The last thing I read is that there was a 51% attack on the network.
•   Has theymos ever done KYC on an exchange, casino or some other third-party site? And what is your opinion on an increasingly present requirement to perform KYC verification?
•   Do you miss certain members who left the forum, and which ones would you like to see come back?

•   If you had the power to decide what would be introduced/changed/removed from Bitcoin, what would you do?
•   Do you believe bitcoin can one day become a currency for day-to-day use with the help of the LN or some other scaling solution?
•   It is my personal opinion that Bitcointalk would be a better place if proven scammers would be banned. Tell me why I am wrong?

•   Does theymos speak any of the languages which have a local board on the forum?
•   Has theymos ever invested or been part of any ICO in the past?
•   Has theymos ever been scammed on bitcointalk?
•   How has bitcoin/Bitcoin changed your life for better or worse?
•   Are you interested in mining, and have you ever done it yourself?

Some quick This or That questions

•   Music or books?
•   Movies or the theatre?
•   Fast food or healthy nutrition?
•   The mountains in the winter or summers by the sea?
•   Smartphone or a computer?
•   Most importantly: ass or tits?
