Couldn't agree more, there are so many alt-coins out there now and most of them will in the end be worth nothing. Buying into any of them is a way larger gamble than buying into Bitcoin or Litecoin.

I have to agree, the much higher alt-coins risk is not justified by potential much higher profit. And given the number of alt-coins it is hard to imagine anyone will actually use these for anything other than trade to Bitcoin

Every coin is going to the moon according to coinmarketcap.com. Amazing performance lately.
Are newbies buying all of then them?

Would be nice to have a service which would create all needed keys or wallet for every single coin type so one could get a portfolio for e.g. $1000 containing all type of coins. Like a coin fund.

if whatever you buy does not have a realistic use case in the long term, it will be winnowed away

Two seat sports cars don't have a realistic use case long term, but oddly they cost more than minivans.

Or at most only the major ones mentioned in the cryptocurrency wikipedia entry:

I consider Peercoin (PPC) a scam coin , as its centralized with checkpointing to prevent 51% attacks , sunny king (or what ever his real name is) can shut it down.

Amazed there is no bankcoin as an altcoin.

Now that would be ironic!

As the unused alt coin names slowly running out, next might be BankCoin indeed

care to explain what is scamcoin? never heard about it

Scam coins are often pre-mined or insta-mined so the developer gets a large share which they then offload on the market after everyone else has been mining it for a while.

He said A scam coin .... One of those dubious coins that pops up, and is abandoned after a few months... That's why I linked to the wikipedia aricle. The four mentioned there are trustworthy (as far as crypto currency is concerned).
